Used properly it can cut, coag, dissect, and be used as a teaching pointer- and comes in endless extensions.

Only instrument that I asked to be added to the thoracic tray when I started. Great for PA dissections #surged #medicaleducation

Simple, but there are few more complex instruments that give the same combination of dissection, haemostasis and tactile feedback.

The Matson-Alexander is the best tool for harvesting an intercostal muscle flap, which is the most underappreciated flap we have. ICM flap can butress, rebuild tracheal wall, close esophageal leaks, and interpose to separate structures.

@Suture_UK @ChrisGeeOrtho @BBASS_skills @Rungichungi @LiangRhea @otolaryngolofox @mstotty88 @MarkBagnallSurg @rbarbosa91 @David_ukan For Thoracic, I'll go with the Finochietto and the Matson-Alexander. Countless uses for the Matson during open thoracotomy, especially for chest wall resection. #thoracic #surgery @TomVargheseJr @BrianMitzman @BrendonStilesMD @ShandaBlackmon @okusanyamd

@Suture_UK @ChrisGeeOrtho @BBASS_skills @Rungichungi @LiangRhea @otolaryngolofox @ElliotServaisMD @MarkBagnallSurg @rbarbosa91 @David_ukan Justification? Careful dissection, slinging vessels and bile ducts, can even use to control small vessels eg from the IVC to the liver whilst tying the other side and thus minimising inefficient moves and instrument changes.

Love using Mcindoes and Gillies together. The fact that these two pioneers were related is why (in my head) I call them: "the cousins"
