So, I'm getting the COVID-19 vaccine on Friday because I'm fat. I'm saying this because I think a lot of people are ashamed that they are qualified bc of this and a lot of other people are judging those who get a vaccine bc of this. 1/4
I did not know this part of Rachel Corrie's story. When her parents visited the home she was killed trying to save, the Israelis drove a fucking bulldozer over toward the home to taunt them.
21 years ago, Rachel Corrie was killed by an Israeli bulldozer while trying to stop the illegal demolition of a Palestinian family’s home in Gaza.
Today, her parents are carrying on her work through the Rachel Corrie Foundation, organizing and lobbying for Palestinian rights.
A woman just took a picture of me on the subway and didn’t realize her flash was on. She’s now avoiding making eye contact with me, but not to worry I got some selfies so the internet can see how ~weird~ I look.
If I have to live in a world where my access to medical care is jeopardized because I'm fat, then yes, I am going to get this vaccine early. I don't know if a doctor would treat me the same as they treated a thin patient if I got COVID and so I am not risking that. 2/4
I just read an article that said more than 25% of people in NYC qualify for the vaccine based on ~BMI.~ I urge everyone who qualifies to go get it, not because BMI means anything, but because medical fatphobia is real. 3/4
A teacher saw a 12-year-old Black kid play with a Nerf gun at home on Zoom, videorecorded him, showed cops. Cops went to his home. He was suspended, his disciplinary record says he took "a fascimile of a firearm to school" & he now has a criminal record with the sheriff's office.
There are thousands of cops on the subway/ in subway stations already. They’re always fucking around on their phones, arresting people for jumping the turnstiles, or harassing women selling food. I can assure you more cops in the subway is not the solution you think it is.
The FLOUR massacre? Are you seeing this? Trying to outlive the starvation only to be shot dead while trying to receive the minimal food aid that’s actually gotten into Gaza. I cannot even fathom this level of cruelty. Glory to the martyrs.
Yet another reminder that protest safety IS important. Evading state surveillance is about more than just avoiding doxxing (which is also important). But we exist in a world where the state is hostile toward protesters, particularly those on the left. 1/7
Last thing on earth id do is call the cops if I was the victim or some racially motivated harassment on the bus. What are they gonna do? Be like “Oh sorry that’s Steve he’s off duty.”
Something I'm noticing online (not from Alex) is a misunderstanding of why we measure CO2 and what to do if it's high.
High CO2 suggests bad or low ventilation, meaning the air you're breathing in isn't new or fresh air, but rather air breathed out by those around you. 1/4
Things I would do with this information if I wasn’t already.
1. Upgrade to n95
2. Get an air purifier/ build CR box
3. Stop going to indoor activities without a mask
4. PCR test as often as possible, supplément rapids
5. Find out how to get paxlovid in advance
We’re in a COVID surge that has been mainstream news sources decrying lack of resources and recommending mask wearing, so I’d say it’s prob way worse than we know and we should be very cautious.
We are in the 2nd worst surge of covid EVER. Even if you’re someone who doesn’t take precautions normally, you def should now (below).
Don’t trust the government to guide you, trust the data. You were probably masking when it was not nearly as bad as it is now. Bring that back.
According to the latest CDC COVID-19 wastewater data, we are currently in the second-biggest surge of the pandemic.
It will peak in the next week, with ~2 million infections per day. During this surge, ~100 million people total (~1 in 3 people in the US) will likely get COVID.
Prison isn’t feminist, policing isn’t feminist, the carceral state isn’t feminist. Anything that drives money to these things isn’t a feminist win. We need to look beyond using state violence to “prevent” or “stop” violence against women bc it certainly isn’t.
8 can't wait removed all the links out to abolitionist reading and instead now has a graphic showing how many cities enacted their useless use of force policy changes in the U.S.'s 100 biggest cities since their campaign launched. What happened to on the road to abolition?
A new CDC report says most foodborne illnesses are caused by restaurant workers being ill when preparing food. The same CDC that said it was fine for workers to return to work 5 days into COVID infection... Anyway paid sick leave for all!!!!
Begging leftists to notice that politicians and pundits (not just in NYC) are beginning to repeat the “people who wear masks still are criminals” line.
This is extremely important both from a disability justice perspective and an anti-surveillance perspective. Don’t look away.
NY Politicians: you don’t have to wear a mask on the subway anymore
NY Politicians shortly after: Much easier for our cameras to surveil you that way 😘
NEW: We will be installing security cameras in every single
@NYCTSubway
car.
My top priority is keeping New Yorkers safe. As we continue welcoming riders back to the subway, we’re enhancing safety and security.
Alt text: two pics of me, a Lebanese woman with pink hair wearing a white 3m aura n95 and holding a little air purifier at chest level. I have brown winged liner on and it looks good tbh
ok this made me lol but has anyone with POTS/hEDS noticed that going in the ocean makes them feel wildly better? like i get 2-3 days of feeling like i am not chronically ill when i swim in the ocean and idk if its the salt or the pressure or what but even my joints feel better
Why can't I find a doctor who will prescribe "sea air" for my nerves so I can spend a summer in a picturesque costal town in England "for my health" only to be caught up in a local scandal and forced to solve a murder???
I can’t stop thinking about the people who say cops that kill people are just “one bad apple” in a department when the idiom is literally “one bad apple spoils the bunch”
I think something people really fail to understand is that those who are avoiding COVID aren’t having fun/ feeling gleeful at being locked out from normal society. We also want to experience a rich life, but are prevented from doing so bc of the dangers COVID poses.
If a person is considering masking again and would in a kn95 (bifold) with ear loops but won’t in a mask with head straps, then we should give them a kn95 bc that’s better than nothing/ surgical. We want the most people taking precautions that they’re ACTUALLY GOING TO DO.
Many of the people you can thank for rapid mobilization around mask distro and air quality education in the NE right now are the disabled and immunocompromised folks a lot of y'all were very quick to abandon during the still ongoing pandemic. 1/5

"The worst thing any country could do now is to use this news as a reason to let down its guard, to dismantle the systems it has built, or to send the message to its people that

is nothing to worry about"-
@DrTedros
If the CO2 is high and you want to reduce it and introduce new air, you need to improve ventilation. This means opening windows/ doors/ updating or turning on HVAC, placing fans strategically to increase air flow from outside. 2/4
Thinking about the last sentence on the 8 to abolition homepage rn:
We believe in a world where there are zero police murders because there are zero police.
That’s it. That’s the only way we’ll eliminate police violence—by eliminating police.
Jordan Neely's murder was undoubtedly racist, but it was also ableist. I highly, highly suggest those of you who have been ignoring disabled people and refusing to learn about disability justice and implement it into your organizing begin to take it seriously.
Both will make the air safer to breathe and the space safer to breathe in, but it's not the CO2 that is the necessarily harmful thing that's being measured (though at 3033, it is harmful lol), but rather the likelihood that the air you're breathing is clean and new. 4/4
People on social media won't tell you their parents assist them with rent. They won't tell you they have an old man who sends them money monthly in exchange for sex. They won't tell you they started business with inherited money.
Consider the RICO charges in Atlanta. This administration has made it clear that they are expanding the definitions of terrorism and extremism to criminalize even more people. While protesting, we should be aware of that and do what we can to be safe. 2/7
I have been trying to place a piece about abolishing the sex offender registry since May. I understand the idea of ending the registry sounds terrifying, but it is in fact a cruel extension of the PIC that doesn't keep us any safer. Are any editors interested in hearing more?
Tomorrow morning, one million N95 masks will be made available at state facilities.
400,000 will be distributed to New Yorkers at
@MTA
stations,
@PABusTerminal
,
@NYStateParks
&
@Javitscenter
.
600,000 will be available from
@NYSDHSES
stockpiles for local governments to pick up.
If the CO2 is high, you can also improve filtration, which with a regular HEPA filter air purifier, will NOT reduce CO2. This will, however, filter particulate matter (including virus particles) out of the air and insert "clean" air into the space. 3/4
A lot of people treat me like I’m unhinged bc of Covid precautions but like wouldn’t you also be driven bananas if you knew a virus caused brain damage and major cardiac events in a ton of people but the majority of the population was like “yolo”
For me, that means I will be wearing a mask to cover my face AND to prevent Covid infection (can spread outdoors), wearing non descript clothing, and covering my tattoos. It’s not foolproof but it is important and better than nothing. 3/7
Palestine doesn’t have an army. Israel is sending an army into Gaza to fight a people who literally DO NOT HAVE AN ARMY TO FIGHT BACK WITH?? What war? This is genocide.
Just got laid off from Netflix/Tudum, effective today. Email me with opportunities at reinasultan

.com so I can pay my rent and help my parents survive!
A bunch of my incredible colleagues got laid off, too. You’d be incredibly lucky to work with any of them.
COVID gave me medical issues and now I have to go to appts weekly to figure out/ treat what’s wrong. None of my providers’ offices require masking anymore, so I have to risk getting the virus that gave me the health problems in order to access treatment.
#KeepMasksInHealthCare
Absolutely in awe of this art (by @/dan_nott on IG) inspired by Ruthie Wilson Gilmore’s reminder that abolition is not just about the absence of police and prisons, but also about the presence of life-giving systems of support.

The writer of this piece spoke to zero (0) Muslims for this piece, but that didn't stop her from perpetuating Islamophobic talking points and burying the lede which is that sick Muslims NEVER HAVE TO FAST. This was true before COVID-19 and remains so now.
It’s really annoying that the Novavax approval is taking forever bc I’d rather get Novavax to try to broaden my protection but need to get boosted ASAP bc of some higher risk stuff I have coming up. We shouldn’t have to do this! (That being said, getting boosted at all is good.)
Wrote about why the new COVID isolation guidelines de-prioritize public health, ignoring science to push the capitalist ideal of individualism over the collective. Unlike the CDC's guidance, my piece for

He didn’t die in vain? Yes the fuck he did. Being murdered by the cops isn’t chosen martyrdom. He didn’t die to make the country less racist nor did that even happen. Fuck you
Today is the last day U.S. hospitals will be required to report COVID admissions, capacity, or occupancy data to the federal government.
This will make it even more difficult to track the state of the ongoing COVID pandemic, as well as monitor potential pandemics like bird flu.
It’s actually not a tenet of abolition to not believe survivors of abuse. You don’t have to agree with decisions to go to the police or believe the state but you do need to believe survivors. We are striving for a world without prisons or police, not a world without consequences.
can't stop thinking about how a bunch of liberals saw the news story about ICE feeding Muslims pork and were like, "NOOOO HALAL MEALS ONLY!!! Religious freedom while in chains <3" instead of like, "Release everyone from ICE detention!"

as a set of demands you (yes, you!!) can bring to your city officials as they scramble to figure out how to respond to our countrywide movement. Tell them that abolition can’t wait.
An alleged shoplifter has been caught on tape appearing to steal 10 steaks from NYC Trader Joe’s. I joined MSNBC to speak on the need for public safety and to address criminal justice concerns.

WTF?
"With COVID-19 numbers again declining, Los Angeles County health officials on Friday, Feb. 2, rescinded a mask-wearing requirement for staff and visitors at licensed health care facilities."
Also it’s always shocking just how stark the difference is in the number of white people masking and the number of non white people masking.
The last train I was on almost every nonwhite person was wearing a mask and every white person wasnt.
I've seen lots of folks get called out/in about masking at actions these days and Franchesca is the only (?) person I've seen respond in this way. Get like her and make your picket line/ protest more accessible!
