Student housing legislation update: All HOMES-sponsored bills have crossed over from their house of origin! AB 648, AB 357, and AB 893 are headed to the Senate, and SB 685 is on to the Assembly. Thank you to authors @AsmRickZbur, Asm. Alvarez, @AsmMikeFong and @SenDaveCortese!.

This feels relevant today.
So much affordable housing development is reliant on federal funding, but California can’t depend on DC for a steady stream of funds anymore. To make campus communities affordable for low income students and faculty without federal money, we need to remove barriers to building.

If we wait for a better budget situation to address the student housing crisis, we'll be waiting for a long, long time, longer than students can afford. AB 893 from @AsmMikeFong provides a pathway to build affordable student housing near campuses with $0 required from the state.
The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office agrees with the Newsom administration that the state is “likely to face persistent future deficits” which are expected to range from $10 billion to $20 billion through the next four years. 📸 Fred Greaves
