In 1884, Mrs Webb of 'Cherwell', Morland Road, 'put her home at the disposal' of the embryonic Croydon Ladies Chess Club. One of the first of its kind. She was encouraged by suffrage supporting Agnes Larkcom (grandma of celebrated horticulturist Joy Larkcom). @SouthwarkWomen.
1/3 Eliza Phillips b1823 Wandsworth was twice widowed when she moved in 1889 to Morland Road, Croydon where she held animal conservation meetings, in particular to campaign against the use of feathers & plumage in women’s hats which had the effect of decimating bird populations.

Three great late C19/early C20 chess players. Bird lived & died in Upper Tooting, Gunsberg Streatham, and Blackburne Lewisham. Buried respectively: Streatham (1908), Streatham Vale (1930), and Brockley (1922) Cemeteries. @SocStreatham.
