Observations and thoughts on the Streatham Wells Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) which began its trial on 23 Oct 2023. Posts by @angusjfrench.

Pre LTN estimated hourly traffic flows on weekdays from 4PM to 7PM. Note the purple sections within the LTN and on boundary roads. I have counted sometimes 300+ motor vehicles going through what was the Valley Road roundabout (at the jnct with Gleneldon Rd) in a 15-minute period.

Today's Standard reveals the average bus speed in London falls below 9mph. Key factors to blame, according to bus operators, include road narrowings, roadworks, cycle lanes and low-traffic neighbourhoods. https://t.co/63p1s3DqRc

@GreenPartyScott @Lambethgp @brixtonbuzz @BrixtonBlog @BrixtonFoodbank @heartstreatham @instreatham @streathamaction @hernehillforum @greenparty_gh @SocStreatham @streathamstuff Hello Scott, re your call (first point) for cleaner air across the borough, can I ask what is your policy and Lambeth Green's policy on LTNs? I ask because LTN impacts - pollution and otherwise - aren't straightforward and because I've never been clear on where the Greens stand.

- One ran from Balham to Norbury, terminating ten stops early (rather than continuing to Pollards Hill) and turned around for the return journey. What caused the disruption? Was it the long delays experienced by services travelling along Thornton Avenue and Sternhold Avenue?

Of the five services scheduled (so far as I can make out) to pass through Thornton Avenue and Sternhold Avenue closest to 5PM, it appears that: - One was diverted down Bedford Hill to St. Leonard’s Church (skipping 11 stops and the section through Streatham Hill); ...

... and on Friday 28/11/25 the times for the same set of services were 23, 13, 23 and 20 minutes. Meanwhile services for the #255 bus which shares the same route along Sternhold Avenue to Streatham Hill station were in disarray...

... and the journey times today (Thursday 27/11/25) for the same services were 15, 22, 21 and 23 minutes. Something I noticed is that it was possible to exit from Ardwell Road onto SHR. There was a sign saying the road is closed but no physical barriers to stop the exit.

Today's timings for the same services were 16, 17, 16 and 17 minutes. So: better but still not great.

Evening rush hour journey times along Thornton Avenue and Sternhold Avenue have often been bad since the Streatham Hill A23 works started. Since stage 2 of the works began on Sunday 16 November, the times seem to have worsened.

Yesterday, during the evening rush hour, four successive #50 bus services took 29, 24, 24 and 20 minutes to travel the two stops from the New Park Road stop to the Streatham Hill station stop. This is against a scheduled 6 minutes. Data + screenshots from https://t.co/iAkUkJd58Z.

I wished I'd had input into this... There are, I think, significant points that could have been made on how LTN schemes are assessed. Why don't the West Dulwich people engage?
🚨✍ PLEASE SIGN! ✍🚨 https://t.co/8bDwCl4z6w Lambeth Council's website now live with a petition calling for a review of how it evaluates LTNS. An opportunity to challenge past & future LTNs. Since the dire #Streatham Wells LTN was claimed a success😬 a review is clearly needed!

... If a bus journey is curtailed then less of a service is provided. The same bus may also start a return journey, not from its scheduled start point but from several stops on, also (a second time) providing less of a service.

ADDENDUM: 1. I tracked a vehicle, a black Ford Transit van on 17 Oct, travelling south along Streatham Hill from just past the A23/A205 junction to over the Streatham Hill junction (maybe 500-600m). It took 13 minutes, from 16:54 to 17:07...
