Alright folks. This year I'm watching a whole lot of Disney movies. If you want to follow along at home, here's a Google Doc with my list, and an explanation of which ones I am, and might not be watching:
The lore for Gooigi in Luigi's Mansion 3 is different depending on whether you're playing in single-player or co-op. In 1P it's merely an empty vessel for Luigi's spirit, but in 2P he has his own sentience. This isn't only a gameplay mechanic; it changes how cutscenes play out:
I’ve been seeing a lot of AI generated images lately that look like one thing from a distance and another thing up close. Anyway here’s a similar illusion I made the old-fashioned way based on Super Mario 64.
What if the next Zelda game... had the same art style as the previous Zelda game? Well it might look something like this: Here are the fruits of my latest endeavor in Blender.

Watching it on loop you can see how deliberately the animators only gave you a few frames where the puzzle piece has a clear and readable silhouette. Normally you'd avoid having the thin edge facing the camera for so much of the animation, but they wanted to make you double-take.
We've had two Japan-exclusive costumes already, so it's time to give
#BowserWeek
a "western rep" with King Koopa as he appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Only one more costume left to share tomorrow. Surely you've guessed it?

Playing Super Mario World as a kid I would always try to get through the whole game ducking. Wonder seems explicitly tailored for this playstyle since you can now walk, jump, carry items, and throw fireballs all while crouching. It’s fun when strangers join in too.
"Your Star Power is useless against me! Your friends are all trapped within the walls..."
Bowser's proportions in Super Mario 64 were very... out of the ordinary. Still two more days to go in

Taking a close look at the
#SmashBrosUltimate
renders, you can see that while Mario's hat is embroidered, Luigi's hat is a bit less fancy with a simple fabric "L" sewn on.
Samus Aran's metroid-infused DNA makes her more susceptible to cold temperatures, so I guess that means she's canonically one of those people that's just cold all the time? And I guess that knowledge led me to rendering her with her entire fist stuffed into a mug of hot cocoa?:
A lot of people who just played Mario RPG for the first time are left wondering how Geno became such a sought-after fighter for Smash. I think for many of his first supporters it dates back to the surrounding context of the original Super Smash Bros. game. 🧵
Today's
#BowserWeek
alternate costume is based on his appearance on the box art of the Famicom version of Super Mario Bros 3. This is a pretty deep cut, but it's exactly the sort of deep cut that Mr. Sakurai would pull if costumes were a focus in

.

Here's a close-up and slo-mo. As you can see this is not the game reducing the framerate of the animation for performance. The coins animate with the same framerate as everything else they just ease in and out of 45° increments in order to evoke the rhythm of SMB3 and SMW sprites
Mario Wonder really seems to be intentionally evoking the style of the sprite animation from the SNES and NES days. The coins rotate somewhat jerkily, slowing down every 45 degrees to hold a pose at the angles you'd expect expect to see from a 4-frame sprite animation loop.
Everybody loves Daisy! She is a terrific athlete! I've seen a lot of people say they should've given her this look instead of the dress in
#SmashUltimate
, which is fair considering she's appeared in this outfit almost as often as her royal gown.
"We considered including Princess Peach as a playable character, but since the moveset makes heavy use of Mario's cap, that just wouldn't be feasible."
I don't generally take commissions, but I recently finished my first one for a stranger. Paper Mario X Monster Hunter. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Someone named Sluggernot commissioned this for use as a tattoo.
I have previously posted about the (at the time) two distinct heights Pauline has had in various games. Since that post, a new Pauline model was introduced in Mario Golf: Super Rush that has yet another different height. Here are all models with their heights relative to Mario.
Yesterday, Mario died.
But was it really just an accident, or was there something more nefarious afoot? Only one mind is cunning enough to crack this case.
Experience her first solo adventure when it launches this April 1st, only on Nintendo Switch.

I couldn't just leave that finely coiffed hair covered with a top-hat, so here's a fashionable Bowser for day 4 of
#BowserWeek
. This version of Bowser appeared alongside J-Pop icon, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, in the commercial for New Nintendo 3DS in Japan

You paid $30 for this game a decade ago, you have no basis to feel entitled to huge annual updates or get upset when those updates don’t meet your standards.
I uploaded these out of order, so here are all the costumes in the order I created them. I tried to start with the hardest one, progressively working towards the easiest, but as you can probably tell, that's not entirely how it went.

@Heartholomew
At face value he seems like a lazy recolour for player 2, but they really did put a lot of effort into making him look and feel unique. The jiggle and lighting effects are great too.
@Vaugely_Vivid
I’m referring to how these poses “break the model” in order to achieve very intentional shapes and curves (designed to look good at one specific angle) that achieves the same charm as a hand-drawn 2D image that simply “posing the model’s armature” does not achieve on its own.
Mario and Luigi’s niece appears in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, implying that there is either a third Mario Brother or a Mario Sister, but neither relation appears in the movie.
Here's my contribution to the

15th anniversary. I love

and it was a great opportunity to make a little tribute to the late/great Iwata. Watch the whole thing here:
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was something entirely new for the franchise when it released in 1996. We talk about Mario being light on story NOW, but back then the idea of characters even talking to Mario in a game was relatively uncharted.
It was hard to make out in the resolution of the Wii U renders, but Wario's buttons say "W Made In" as a reference to "Made In Wario" (The Japanese name for the Wario Ware series.)
Daisy's iris has a subtle starburst shape around the pupil that Peach's irises lack. Crazy how even these unnoticeably meticulous details are used to underline the bubbly vs. elegant personalities of the characters.
So the fact that Geno had a backstory, personal motives, and spoke to Mario on the level of a friend, made him much more of a character than the Mario games had really seen up to that point.
Day 2 of
#BowserWeek
! It's not exactly an alt "costume", but you also wouldn't call it an alt "skin"... It's Dry Bowser! What alternate Bowser will tomorrow bring? Have I run out of ideas? Will I have to resort to Gold Dry Bowser? Wait and see!

If I'd known this was going to take off (I didn't even use hashtags or searchable terms) I would have worded it with more nuance . SMB Wonder seems to have a focus on posing its models to evoke the energy and shape of a 2D drawing in a way that is new and unique to 3D Mario.
Geno may be a bit lacking in personality from today’s standards, but in 1996 the bar for Mario characters having voice and personality was low. Toads were known to give tips and instructions, and Kamek had some lines in Yoshi’s Island but that was pretty much it.
The ropes hanging off of Ganondorf's cape look incredible in the render. This guy has a habit of letting his capes get torn at tattered at the end, so it's nice to see him get a fresh one for this title.
You don't exactly need a magnifying glass for this detail, but although her footwear was never shown in Link Between Worlds, the Smash team opted to give her a high-heeled sandal. They also decided to remove her lipstick and blue eyeshadow from that game.
I knew that the bridge in Mario Odyssey's "Jump Up Super Star!" was based on the level theme from the original Donkey Kong, but I only today realized that this bridge transitions into the next verse by having the trumpets mimic the sound of jumping over a barrel in that game.
The world of SMRPG might today feel like a different world than the mainstream Mario canon as it’s known today, but back then it was the only game really bothering to GIVE lore to the Mario world. This game let open the floodgates of Mario lore in an unprecedented way.
The BotW and TotK key artworks don't actually line up as cleanly as this post may lead you to believe. This is just a Photoshop "content aware fill" as evidenced by the moon getting erased and the janky birds. If we're going to survive it in an AI world, we need to be discerning.
Strangely, Mario's mustache is more detailed than Dr. Mario's mustache. The game is still in development, but the renders have been officially released. I suppose the Mario render will be used more and used at larger sizes than Dr. Mario, so they've put a bit more detail into it.
The Ultimate renders are good, but it's also nice to know that Nintendo doesn't know how to Photoshop fire onto a light coloured background any better than I do.
Okay I've beaten the game, but I still don't understand why all the zonai tech has this symbol of a broom/feather-duster on it. What does this symbol represent?
The War Ladies together at last: Walupeachy and her sidekick Waizy.
I'd like to make a doppelgänger for Rosalina too, but we'll see how that goes.

#Wadaisy
This is something else I've already tweeted, but it's still interesting that Robin's fingernails are so much longer than the other male characters in the game.
February will mark an entire decade since the last all-new standalone Donkey Kong game. But that was never Nintendo's plan. We recap the story of "Donkey Kong Freedom," the lost 3D DK game for Nintendo Switch!
My Minecraft X Wind Waker resource pack is available now! And it even features a new Minecrafty arrangement of the Lost Swamp theme from "Cadence of Hyrule" by the one and only

Perhaps my ruling was premature, because Rosalina also has Daisy's starburst iris, but turned up to 11. I guess if anyone ought to have stars in her eyes it's the queen of the stars.
Here's my take on Mario Power Tennis's scrapped "Walupeachy" character.
Did you know that the letter "P" in sign language, if you turn it upside down, kind of looks like like you've just snapped your fingers? So I decided that ought to be her signature pose.

#Walupeachy
Paper Mario wouldn’t come out until 2001, so SMRPG had time to cement itself as the standard for what story and characters could be in a Mario game, in many fans minds.
I guess Lucario's face is just black leather? I thought maybe this is what a dog's nose or paws looked like, but after a brief Google search, that's not really the case...
Mario Wonder really seems to be intentionally evoking the style of the sprite animation from the SNES and NES days. The coins rotate somewhat jerkily, slowing down every 45 degrees to hold a pose at the angles you'd expect expect to see from a 4-frame sprite animation loop.
It looks like the tread of Sonic's shoes is just a grey image printed on the bottom of his otherwise smooth grey soles. I guess that explains why he takes so long to pick-up speed from a standstill.
But rather than this being the new standard, in the years that followed, Mario largely went back to its usual fare of unambitious story where characters rarely spoke and lore was simple.
