Today, I joined my colleagues in introducing a Veteran Promise Package. There are 300,000+ veterans in WI who deserve support. This bill package will fund effective & needed programming to help those who maybe struggling w/ mental health & give vets the recognition they deserve.

Mahlon has spent decades serving his community & fighting for improved hours, wages, safety, working conditions, & retirement security for firefighters & paramedics. In recognition of his extraordinary leadership, I was proud to present him with this well-deserved nomination.

Notably, Lieutenant Mitchell served as President of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin from 2011 until June of this year, championing legislation to protect firefighters & paramedics statewide — including a groundbreaking bill that secured workers’ compensation coverage.

For 27 years, Mahlon has dedicated himself to the City of Madison, serving at Fire Station 1 — Madison’s busiest fire station. Since 2014, he has also led Fire Fighters Local 311 as President, advocating for fair wages and safe working conditions for his colleagues.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of recognizing Lieutenant Mahlon Mitchell, who has served the City of Madison Fire Department with honor & distinction as a Firefighter/EMT, Apparatus Engineer, Chief’s Aide, and Lieutenant, as First Responder of the Year.

By recognizing the Rights of Nature, Wisconsin can reaffirm its leadership in environmental stewardship, empower communities to safeguard their air, land, and water, and honor the knowledge of Indigenous Nations who have lived in relationship with this land since time immemorial.

The concept of the “Rights of Nature,” rooted in Indigenous worldviews & increasingly recognized across the globe, provides a new legal & moral framework for protecting the natural systems upon which all life depends. This approach complements WI’s proud conservation tradition.

Wisconsin is home to extraordinary natural ecosystems — from our forests & prairies to our lakes & wetlands — that sustain the health, economy, & cultural identity of our state. Yet, these ecosystems face unprecedented threats from climate change, biodiversity loss, & pollution.
