Marc Andreessen on why VCs ignore cold emails — and why that’s not unfair “The way the top-end venture capitalist firms work is they’ll basically take you seriously if you come in introduced by somebody they’ve worked with before, and they won’t take you seriously if you don’t.”

@StartupArchive_ Simpler explanation is that, like, the vast majority of cold emails just aren't very convincing.

@StartupArchive_ I apply the same rules to investors. If they can’t find a way to meet me, it’s not a good sign and you don’t have to take them seriously (though I’d do appreciate the love letters).

@StartupArchive_ This is legit his worst take ever All this does is allow well connected douche bags to fleece VCs of money. Mountains of exceptionally talented people have no VC contact and network but know loads of world class talent. This helps nepo babies stay in power, and lovks out the rest

@StartupArchive_ Pre-internet, asking for an intro might’ve been a test of hustle. Today, judging a founder for it feels outdated.

@StartupArchive_ Whatever, his investors totally lose out to SP500 with a 30% leverage. VC cancers earns mainly though charging carried interest off client's monies rather than actual expertise in managing underlying companies.

@StartupArchive_ I think that’s very short sighted and probably why you have rampant integration if failing companies and a 29% sociopath statistic in corporate leadership roles, speedballs. @pmarca

People have a great need for situations, processes and phenomena in their lives to make sense. We are bound as humans to logic and reason. I feel quite certain in my entire life experience that I shall never understand the concept, or basis, for Jew hatred.

@StartupArchive_ “If you can’t figure out a way to network your way to a VC firm—which of course is in the business of meeting founders—then you’re unlikely to be able to network your way into hiring a great team or selling your product to customers” Wrong, annoying, and cope. Abolish VCs asap

@StartupArchive_ The filter isn't cruel—it's diagnostic. If you can't convince one person to make an intro, you can't convince anyone to buy, join, or fund.

@StartupArchive_ He's wrong. He wants to maintain status. Which isn't fine but don't lie to us.

@StartupArchive_ Why are we still selling what can’t be bought? No doubt the boss better be busy. The first test is to be a good boss and receive no accolades or compensation for efforts at all. As long as it takes. If not. Remain a manager. Boss is Boss by the tone beaten into them.

@StartupArchive_ Exceptional VC's find exceptional founders & companies, not the other way around.

@StartupArchive_ Seems like this makes for a very incestuous and provincial industry. Extremely vulnerable to Groupthink

@StartupArchive_ Was very frustrating when I first started. Then realized you have to just play the game (also vcs get a crap ton of inbound so it’s difficult to filter)

@StartupArchive_ Works pretty much the same in the job-market, and that is why referrals are an important lever for companies recruiting.

@StartupArchive_ I wonder how many LPs consider the first test of their fund managers to be finding talent - rather than just recognizing talent that shows up with a warm intro on their doorstep.
