Stamp Duty is a barrier to recovery of the UK housing market – recovery is more transactions, not rising prices. Stamp Duty Reform UK campaigns for change.

Why aren't property owners in London more angry? £2.25m buys a terrace or semi-detached property in Putney – not a mansion. Stamp Duty is £183,750. High value property tax is £2.5k pa from 2026. Council Tax for Band H is an additional £2k pa. #stampduty #counciltax #mansiontax

A moronic tax that will actually lose the Treasury money. Will cost homeowners billions in lost value. It’s about pure envy.@RachelReevesMP @Keir_Starmer @TalkTV @GBNEWS #MansionTax #HousingMarket @JuliaHB1

Property experts have warned that the so-called 'high council tax surcharge' will distort property values and have knock-on effects throughout the market.

The #MansionTax sees all money raised will going straight to the Treasury. This will clearly reduce disposable income and as such will have an impact on retail, leisure, food & drink sectors and in turn their suppliers. Reverse multiplier effect - law of unintended consequences.

Nick Leeming, chairman of Jackson-Stops, said: “What concerns me is the greater economic consequences beyond the Chancellors tax grab, leaving £2m homeowners who are mortgaged having the potential to slip into negative equity as prices realign." https://t.co/EsjEwPPjTM

Hopes of Stamp Duty reforms were dashed in the chancellor’s Autumn Budget but there was plenty for agents to ponder from a new mansion tax to extra property taxes for landlords. – Autumn Budget 2025:...

The council tax surcharge bands: £2m to £2.5m will pay £2,500 £2.5m to £3.5m will pay £3,500 £3.5m to £5m will pay £5,000 More than £5m will pay £7,500 AND DON"T FORGET TO ADD ON THE £5,000 COUNCIL TAX THEY ARE ALREADY PAYING! #counciltax #mansiontax #budget2025

Many Band H homeowners in London and the South East are already paying around £5k pa on Council Tax. Add on £2,500+ #mansionTax and it's a big hit out of taxed income (or a pension). And £2m does not buy you a 'mansion' #budget2025 #counciltax
OK everyone get back up and dust yourself down. The damage was done by all that kite flying. But unless you own a home over £5 mill, earn very nearly £50K, have an electric car or are a landlord you can breath more easily. Oh, that’s quite a lot of folk. Oh well.

@MartinSLewis Will people stop calling it a mansion tax- it’s a tax on family homes in London and the south east - nothing less than an ideologically motivated swipe at a small number of people for limited tax gain

@10DowningStreet So called Mansion tax, forcing pensioners out of their homes. Vindictive and evil.

Many £2m plus properties in London subject to the new #mansiontax are likely to be either terraced family homes with the owners leveraged with large mortgages or retired people with their property as their only asset and living on a small income #stampduty #budget #propertymarket

An appalling #budget for homeowners in London and the South East. The absurd #mansiontax will encourage people to sit tight and wait for the next government. The upper end of the #propertymarket will freeze, potentially impacting on those lower down the chain. #stampduty

HMRC has released the monthly provisional estimates of residential UK property transactions. Seasonally adjusted transactions have decreased by 2% from 95,240 in July 2025 to 93,630 in Aug 2025. All the indications are that Sept will be much worse. #stampduty #propertysales

Stamp Duty increase depresses housing market. The provisional seasonally adjusted estimate of the number of UK residential transactions in May 2025 is 81,470, 12% lower than May 2024. Government, when are you going to learn about the damage #stampduty does to the economy?

Stamp Duty: – Is a barrier for first-time buyers – Deters people from moving for a better job – Encourages owners to overdevelop small houses rather than move – Discourages older owners from downsizing AND THE BUDGET HAS MADE THIS WORSE! #budget2024 #stampduty #propertytax
