It’s time for the Government to step up to ensure all students can continue to study at University without worrying about putting food on the table, or working unreasonable hours to balance the books. If they don’t, we are facing a new landscape of inequality.

In Scotland, the rent freeze has virtually no impact on student who leave over summer as landlords get to jack up the rent by sometimes as much as 100% (!!!). https://t.co/6pqreXsgf8

Despite this, the U.K. Governments continue to refuse a real terms increase in student loan funding. They refuse to legislate so young people are paid a fair wage. EVERY household in the UK got £400 this year to help with energy bills. Except students in halls.

Student rent has increased by over 34% in the last 3 years, according to NUS. Students are facing the same catastrophic increases in energy bills, they are facing the same increases in food and transport to get to University. All whilst trying to study full time for a degree.

On top of that, the majority of students get paid far less than their older colleagues simply because of their age (up to £3 less an hour, almost 1/3 if their entire wage!). If you're under 18, it's HALF. Yet the do the same work and face the same increases in their living costs.

It also means the pattern of your shifts change; one week you might be working Tuesday, the next you might be on Thursday during a time when you’ve got class or a lecture. Students have no choice but to miss important classes, or face being given no shifts at all.

What’s often forgotten about is the nature of student work. The rise of the gig economy means those jobs are often zero hours with insecure contracts. You don’t know how much money you’ll be getting from one week to the next. How can anyone reasonable live like that?

During the cost-of-living crisis, alongside stagnated funding, students are working more hours in their part time job than ever before. But that work is often underpaid, insecure and the Government needs to step in fast if we want to protect a whole generation of students. 🧵

We've got some big issues facing our community. Accommodation is unaffordable, the cost-of-living crisis continues to hit hard, our staff suffer through low pay and the Scottish Government has wiped out funding for our Universities in the last weeks...

Deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, a remarkable and committed head of State. I want to offer my condolences to her family, especially to our alumni the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and to all those affected by her loss.

I want to give our students a very warm welcome to St Andrews. We officially started orientation week today and it has been lovely to see everybody so excited and thrilled about a new year that feels like a return to normal life after the pandemic. Happy Freshers Week!
