Ooh, tough one. But I'll go for Journey Into Fear by Eric Ambler. It set the template for a classic type of spy story - hapless innocent in over his head who must find the inner resources to save himself. Great characters and settings too.

The second in our #21BooksOfChristmas, and it’s the irritatingly gifted ⁦@sauldavid66⁩ - who *really* should eat more mince pies - and his monumental “Tunisgrad”. The perfect #Christmas gift for your resident #WW2 obsessive.

Getting a book advance is akin to starting a small business. Except you are getting an interest free loan with little to no go-to-market data. The little data you have is filtered through an overworked Vassar grad with an inferiority complex.
