Kinetic energy of a 75,000 pound semi truck and trailer traveling at 65 mph is a 3,200 pound car about 300 mph. Highways = physics roulette. To match k.e. of 3,200 pound car going 65 mph, a semi truck and trailer at 75,000 pounds must stay under 15 mph.

Crash energy = (1/2) x (mass) x (speed squared) As vehicle speeds rise, so does the severity and likelihood of crashes. Blame physics. All those years ago, Isaac Newton was trying to tell us that traffic calming is a pretty big deal.

Shoutout to the men and women keeping our roads safe this holiday season. This morning, Sergeant Taylor pulled over a driver on I-35 in Decatur County. Believe it or not, the driver actually ASKED FOR A WARNING!

Hey, @amazon Why have you added friction a.k.a. sludge to the return process? I used to select a store name and drop by any. Now I have to pick a specific location to get the Confirm button to activate?

The definition of insanity: [ create public message 'slow down' for 70 years and expect different results ] When you design Dodge as straight as a rifle barrel, don't be surprised when drivers act like bullets. Omaha

They: "Speed limiters on the electric scooters!" Me: "Crash kinetic energy is directly related to weight, so we should put limiters on the vehicles heavier than scooters." They: "You can't suppress freedom!"

I'm just gonna point out... All these cars can fit about 5 people each... A bus could probably fit around 40 or 50... A single Amtrak train could fit 300. When are we gonna make this happen??

Here's a look at folks headed north on I-75 as #HurricaneMilton is due to make landfall mid week. This is about 60 miles north of #Tampa and as you can see the left shoulder is now open to add another lane to help people move along. All tolls in FL also suspended. @knxnews

If all the speed limit signs in your town disappeared overnight, would your street designs communicate how fast people should drive? If you have properly designed your street, it should be self-enforcing a.k.a. self-explaining. The best traffic engineers have done this.

Studies have repeatedly found that drivers will go a comfortable speed based on roadway design, regardless of posted speed limits. If roadways are designed to make drivers feel comfortable traveling at high speeds, they will do so.

Reality: US cities are full of drivers going 15mph over the speed limit while playing with phones in 5000lb vehicles with illegal tinted glass. Police: Let's ticket cyclists going 1mph over a little known speed limit on a mixed use trail.

"All I am asking for is safety." Ankeny homeowners in the D.R. Horton development '36 West' are frustrated that Horton won't fix sidewalks and ramps that don't comply with ADA standards. City of Ankeny says they won't intervene because it's a private development.
