My friend made a sexual harassment complaint against her phd advisor in 2019. Last week the university ruled against the math professor. Today they fired him.
I have the impression they see this whole thing as a big injustice.
I understand why, such behavior didn't used to be a fireable offense, so somehow the rules changed mid-game.
But it was never OK. I hope they know that.
A news article quoted a female mathematician saying that my friend "dressed in a certain way", and that she "was trying to look good for the men in the group".
I try to stay professional in this social network.
But what the actual fuck.
I understand his math community is not happy with this outcome
This guy is a very good mathematician and an excellent teacher. He is a great friend, colleague and mentor to many people
However, they need to acknowledge that he did some fucked up things, and students were involved
I was offered $2,500 to give a 1-hour research talk but my visa doesn't allow me to get paid.
There is a saying in Spanish for this:
Dios le da pan al que no tiene dientes.
(God gives bread to who have no teeth)
I'm muting this now, but I am so thankful for your support
I feel sad for everyone involved (especially my friend, but I also fell sad for him). The math community in my country will take a long time to recover from this. Nobody won here, except for future female students
Super proud of my first PhD student

By the age of 30 you should know not to describe female students in recommendation letters as **fun** and definitely don't use any adjective to describe their **smile**.
I can't believe this shit.
@tonia_ries
I think going through the whole process was 1000 times worse than the sexual harassment itself, honestly.
She did it because she is an incredibly brave woman and wanted the culture to change.
@modeltheorist
@MarissaKawehi
Thank you. A lot of people don't realize how hard it was (and is) for her. Her name showed up everywhere in the press and her life was scrutinized: her divorce, her clothes, her success, her PhD acknowledgement section.

When I was a teen my Dad told me I couldn't be a mathematician because math was already invented (the last math invention was calculus)
I didn't believe him and now I can say I am an applied mathematician
He is quite proud (and surprised)
Omg! Someone I know got this ad on Facebook ♥️. My mom asked me if I knew I was a model for Microsoft Research 😂. I didn't but I am glad they liked my talk. I was so nervous!

showed me the bubble-of-bubbles interpretation of a VAE. The loss sums the reconstruction loss and the KL divergence with a Gaussian prior, and can be seen as bubble-of-bubbles drawing in the board. Amazing slides:
My online orientation: **successful profs don't spend time thinking of how to get tenure but just doing amazing work that results on tenure without thinking about it**
Me: no idea how to access any building on campus (doors were locked in 2020)
One deep secret you don't quite see as an undergrad is that literally nobody tells your professors how to be professors. They just show up one day and they're professors and there isn't really much of an onboarding process, or like professor bootcamp or whatever

It's an amazing research environment plus people are super friendly and supportive.

Today I came out to my conservative family. I told them I was a feminist and explained my reasons.
They believe our society is not sexist and I am overreacting.
But they still love me.

I really see no downside to using git for research projects, except sometimes when there is a conflict on a LaTeX file and the merge fails and you have to burn down your house and start a new life in Uruguay under a different name.

I once submitted to COLT and got a review saying my results were "amusing" but not interesting to the COLT community. That was the first and last time.
Something I find disgusting about academia is how elitist and classist it can be.
Assist Prof (non-white woman): I used to work at IHop as a waitress.
Senior Prof (as a "joke"): We shouldn't have hired you.
Wasn't his joke saying "you are not one of us"?
I have a feeling social media can deflate some early-career researchers because we tend to celebrate only successes on it. So here I am sharing my failures, in the hope it will lift the spirits of some folks.

What? A summer school for PhD students on machine learning theory. The main courses will be given by Nati Srebro, Tengyu Ma, Sebastien Bubeck, and myself 🙃.
When? June 13 - 17, 2022
Where? At Princeton.
@lpachter
Thanks for being outspoken about these issues. My close friend recently made a sexual harassment complaint against her PhD advisor. It almost ruined her career and mental health. It's hard for the victims to come out, the backlash they face is sometimes harder than the harassment

When I was 20, I would go dancing all night on Friday until 6am, go home, take a shower, and go teach at a Saturday morning math olympiad club for middle schoolers
I have no clue how that was something I wanted to do, or even physically possible 🙃

Hey, I'm a postdoc in applied math and data science at NYU. I am interested in algorithms for clustering, dimensionality reduction, and matching datasets. I am from Uruguay.
@_onionesque
I love this paper by my colleague
@mateodd25
I think it opens the door to many interesting questions. E.g. how do GNNs or Deep Sets fit this framework?
@_chismosa_
I always say yes when asked for an extension, but I feel bad for students that don't get it because they are too shy to ask. If possible I give the extension to everyone.

Can I compute this for Lie groups over R?

Agree, it's not my style to chime in on tw controversies, but the design of the transformer (and CNNs, GNNs, etc) has underlying symmetry motivations IMO.

Mañana en el Cibercoloquio, Pablo Soberón (CUNY Baruch College) nos hablará sobre la topología de las particiones de medidas. Pablo () es mexicano y es experto en geometría discreta. Además, es un excelente divulgador de las matemáticas.
Since this tweet was a success I'll make a follow up
Last year I was lucky to go to a conference in the French Alps and I sent this picture to my Dad.
His reply: who would have guessed that those silly maths could take you so far? 😂🤣
Why? A chance to learn about some exciting new ideas from computer science, statistics, physics, and mathematics for understanding machine learning. Also, an opportunity to meet other young researchers.

There was a comic at the UT Math Department wall saying
"Classification of mathematical problems as linear and non-linear is like classification of the Universe as bananas and non-bananas" 🍌
It's time to stop making t-SNE & UMAP plots. In a new preprint w/ Tara Chari we show that while they display some correlation with the underlying high-dimension data, they don't preserve local or global structure & are misleading. They're also arbitrary.🧵
Just talked to my friend in Valparaiso. She and her neighbors had been setting barricades for the past 6 nights to protest the curfew. She never imagined she'd live this violence, mostly from police and military. She doesn't know what to believe and only trusts her neighbors.

Why not leave the packages in the building lobby?
This is Amy. She’s been running the package room in my NYU building for 22 years, and today she broke down crying while telling me how scared she is to come to work every day. She has been deemed an essential employee, even though her job puts her, and every resident, at risk.
