Note: Snow himself acknowledged that the removal of the pump handle is unlikely to have really altered the course of the outbreak (which has already ended).
#OTD 1854 John Snow had the Broad St pump handle removed, ending the Soho cholera outbreak. Snow’s intervention before establishing definitive cause (Vibrio cholerae was not isolated until 1883) was based on extensive ground-truth research, now the model for modern epidemiology.

This news makes me feel, in order: a) honoured to have been nominated by colleagues I greatly respect; b) proud to be a social scientist; c) excited to do my part for @AcadSocSciences; and d) like I was still the age at which the linked photo was taken.
Congratulations to Professor G.J. Melendez-Torres (@gjmelendez) on becoming an @AcadSocSciences Fellow. G.J. has been elected for his significant contributions to social science and excellence in research. Full story: https://t.co/UcvrpuJFHV

Questions I got asked by people attending my poster presentation: 1) "What's an estimand?" 2) "What's a substitution effect?" 3) "Is there a framework I can follow to avoid this problem and do better systematic reviews" These demonstrate the need for this work! #EpiTwitter
I'm delighted to be presenting a poster at #SSM2024 on behalf of @NataliaOrHe, @GeorgiaTomova, and a dream team of colleagues on why 'meta analyses of nutritional exposures must identify and distinguish between study estimands' #EpiTwitter #CausalTwitter
