The Smoking Toolkit Study shows substantial declines in smoking prevalence and cigarette consumption among adults in England since 2007. However, the extent of these changes differs according to how the outcomes are defined. Research letter in @TC_BMJ

A recent BMJ article (linked in the post below) suggested e-cigarettes are compromising children's human rights. Our response argues that proportionate, evidence-led regulation best protects children's rights. Read it here:

Globally, children are now using e-cigarettes at higher rates than adults, largely because of the nicotine industry targeting youth. This Analysis argues for an approach to regulation that prioritises children’s rights https://t.co/yd3eyL5PpN

New feature in @bmj_latest asks: Should a smoke-free generation also be vape-free? TLDR: my answer is a resounding no. https://t.co/fRpFLI4vVW

The SNDI offers an efficient and practical alternative to traditional dependence measures that rely on cigarette consumption. It may also be useful for assessing dependence on other nicotine products (eg, e-cigarettes, pouches) - more research needed! https://t.co/44X0Yvu7N5

In both datasets, the Short Nicotine Dependence Index explained more variance in cotinine than the widely used Heaviness of Smoking Index.

Using data from the Health Survey for England (HSE; 2000-2021), we show saliva cotinine concentrations increase consistently with higher SNDI scores, indicating higher nicotine intake. A similar gradient was observed in a 1989 GP survey, despite higher cigarette consumption.

The SNDI is scored 1-9 based on responses to two questions: How soon after waking do you usually smoke your first cigarette of the day? (scored 1-6) How easy or difficult would you find it to go without smoking for a whole day? (scored 0-3) https://t.co/44X0Yvu7N5

We developed a brief two-item Short Nicotine Dependence Index (SNDI) assessing urge to use and difficulty abstaining. We examined its association relative to that of the established Heaviness of Smoking Index (HSI) with saliva cotinine, a biomarker of nicotine exposure.

Nicotine dependence measures often rely on self-reported cigarette consumption, which (1) has declined over time and (2) may not accurately reflect nicotine intake - because people can adjust how they smoke each cigarette to get the desired nicotine dose https://t.co/tDHkAo6pic

New paper proposes a new self-report measure of nicotine dependence: the Short Nicotine Dependence Index. ➡️Two items assess urge to use and difficulty abstaining ➡️The scale outperforms existing short tools in predicting nicotine exposure 🧵 https://t.co/44X0Yvu7N5

In a letter published today in the BMJ, we call for urgent action to correct misperceptions of vaping. As long as public perceptions of vaping are misaligned with evidence, the opportunity for vaping to further reduce smoking is being missed. https://t.co/0pBUg4gICt

Smokers are three times more likely than non-smokers to be out of work owing to poor health, and numbers are rising fast
Our new paper in @LancetRH_Europe documents stark inequalities in health-related economic inactivity by smoking status. As of 2025, one in nine working-age adults in England who smoked were not in work due to long-term illness or disability. This association is embedded in

This is potentially a hill I will die on - overuse of non-standard abbreviations and acronyms drives me crazy...
An abbreviation (ABB) in a journal article (JA) or Grant Application (GA) is rarely worth the words it saves. Every ABB requires cognitive resources (CR) and at my age by the time I'm halfway through a JA or GA I no longer have the CR to remember what your ABB stood for.

New in @AddictionJrnl, we find adults who smoke cigarettes non-daily tend to be more motivated to quit smoking than those who smoke every day, especially among older and less advantaged people. https://t.co/F4EkB93ifB
