This is alarming. Noting also that the Saudis are Twitter's second largest investors.

A Saudi court has sentenced a man to death based solely on his Twitter& YouTube activity. Repression has reached a terrifying new stage when a court can hand down the death penalty for nothing more than tweets. Saudi authorities should quash the verdict. https://t.co/jUYep3vrei

If you like this style of graphically illustrated science comm, please check out Dan's book "Hidden Systems" which illustrates the history and sociotechnical complexities of our water, electrical, and internet infrastructure.

This is a new mode of science communication and community engagement for me. Dan really tried to get me to break the habit of relying too much on text to communicate ideas, even complex ones. This is something Dan is truly brilliant at.

This is probably the last professional update I'll put on this mess of a platform. I co-wrote a comic with Dan Nott, for @thenib and it's available online today! "Our Labor Built AI" is a comic about how AI has always required human intelligence and labor.

It might seem like a black box, but computing has always relied on the labor of people.

This points to the bad design of standard tests for creativity or the tests are within the training set already. https://t.co/qBzrFX0iUw

I have argued repeatedly that the empowerment of data workers leads to better data. I explored the link between labor conditions and data quality in my dissertation:

But while Musk lacks the charm of earlier Silicon Valley grifters, he's much better than they ever were at running a long con. For years, he's been promising "full self driving...next year." https://t.co/OOofT8uggp 9/

Previous tech barons had "reality distortion fields," but Musk just blithely contradicts himself and pretends he isn't doing so, like a budget Steve Jobs. There's an entire site devoted to cataloging Musk's public lies: https://t.co/UkZDAaNSH9 8/

On one side, we have mountains of evidence showing AI is fallible, overblown, can't substitute for real intel, obscures accountability, yokes big tech & US military in conflicted ways... ETC. On the other, you have the CEO of Palantir... & this guy. https://t.co/WygnOuuyxE

Measuring scholarly impact by paper count is like measuring programmer impact by lines of code count. It's a giant red flag.

This is not sad, this is a warning. A company did everything (mostly) right: created a vitally useful free service, worked hard to keep it healthy, shared data for research. Then another company swooped the data and made it compete against itself.

This is what happens if an entire site is scraped & plagiarized, all the old Stackoverflow answers are now condensed in an ever confabulating chatbot that doesn't have a clue what it's doing. Be prepared for very buggy software going forward.

Musk doesn't have the money or the staff to meaningfully update or even fix Twitter, so he's making the cheapest, smallest tweak he can - literally swapping out a GIF file - that grabs the biggest headlines. It's nothing but a cheap, meaningless play to get his name in the press.

everything 'creative' is a remix of things that happened in the past, plus epsilon and times the quality of the feedback loop and the number of iterations. people think they should maximize epsilon but the trick is to maximize the other two.
