Science is a discipline based on peer review, therefore it is critical scientific advice is transparent. We are convening this meeting not to criticise the scientists on SAGE but to ensure that what we believe is the best science is available and in the public domain.
Sir David King, government critic and former chief scientific adviser, announces 12‑strong group and criticises lack of transparency in Boris Johnson’s decisions
Today the
@CommonsPAC
has released a scathing review of the spend on the privatised Test and Trace system. Unfortunately it has had virtually no coverage from the press. lays bare the vast sums of money that have been squandered to date.
1/ Some people are questioning why it matters that an advisor attend SAGE? Indeed, in my time in govt non-scientific civil servants regularly attended similar meetings in a non-participatory or note taking role. However, these were never SPADs who are of course party political.
Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our
@IndependentSage
meeting. We will be holding a press conference at 4pm to discuss some recommendations. I hope this is the start of something important, I'm incredibly grateful to all those who took part and watched.
Of course, I am simply the chair and convenor of
@IndependentSage
, a group of 12 truly world leading scientists in their fields. We will continue to put what we see as the best available advice into govt and the public at this critical moment.
I don't say this lightly but if this report from
@PaulLewis
et al in the
@guardian
is accurate (which I have no reason to doubt) it marries with all of my worst fears. This is simply unimaginable, an egregious abuse SAGE membership the govt must answer
Rishi Sunak is now breaking openly with the all-party agreement dating back to 2008, which led to the set up of the world’s first Climate Change Committee of Parliament. The proposal to issue at least 100 new oil and gas licenses is another drain on our failing economy.
Tomorrow
@IndependentSage
meets for the first time. We will convene a group of world leading experts to discuss how we can navigate our way out of CV19 with minimal loss of life in the fastest time. We invite you to watch live at 12 on twitter or YouTube
3/ If a SPAD is sitting on SAGE it’s a fair assumption that *they* are at least in part playing this role, one which it’s simply inappropriate and wrong for them to be playing.
The reopening of schools is clearly a topic of great concerns for many. On Friday
@IndependentSage
will be holding a public consultation to discuss. More details will follow but if you have any specific questions please respond here or Tweet
@IndependentSage
for consideration.
It is of course reasonable to expect teething problems but these figures are deeply misleading. This coupled with relaxing of lockdown is concerning. There is still an opportunity to get the next phase right but an urgent re-think is required.
Matt Hancock says 85% of contacts had been traced. This is deeply misleading as it relates only to the 5407 individuals who were reached by contact tracers and ignores 75% of new cases - new response by the Independent SAGE
I'm of the view that this piece from James Hansen and 17 others last week is one of the most important published on the state of the climate crisis in years. A 🧵
1 out of 10.
That’s what
@Sir_David_King
gives the UK government’s response to the pandemic. He tells
@BeckyCNN
that even with the latest promising vaccine news, we’re not out of the woods yet.
Yesterday I was fortunate enough to have dose 1 of the vaccine. It is entirely fair to ask questions about the rigour and process they have been through. But for what it's worth I did not hesitate in saying yes and I urge you to do the same when you have the opportunity.
I hope that after our first
@IndependentSage
meeting today both we and the govt advisors are able to open up our books and show our workings. Only then will know if the government is following the best scientific advice. Without transparency it is simply impossible to know.
Former Chief Scientific Advisor, Sir David King says he is "worried" that ministers are "setting the scientists up to be the fall guys" after he joins other experts to form 'independent SAGE'.

2/ I remind people that I served under both Labour and Conservative governments so the concern I am showing is not party political. Let me be clear on this, the Chief Scientific Advisor's role is to distil information from experts on SAGE and inform government.
The Great Barrington declaration is anything but great. It brings science into disrepute. It is alluring for many, but make no mistake, it is dangerous.
The President of the UK's Academy of Medical Scientists, Professor Sir Robert Lechler, has issued a statement demolishing the US sponsored Great Barrington manifesto on 'herd immunity' and infecting the mass of the UK population with

Scandalous expenditure. Treasury reports 10 billion spent on private contracts for test and trace system that still doesn’t work. most of the work is being done by public sector public health teams. 15 billion on PPE. All These contracts must be published.
@IndependentSage
The former chief scientific adviser
@Sir_David_King
may be 80, but no one is fiercer in their criticism of the UK’s pandemic response, or more determined to hold the government to account. He tells

The day before the UN General Assembly where climate is the critical topic not only is the UK PM not attending but now we see clear reneging on our Net Zero commitments. In the face of a deepening crisis what does this say to the world?
Kamali: Have you heard anything encouraging from Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak that they take the climate crisis seriously?
“Frankly, no” says

The evidence is clear, COVID19 is disproportionately affecting our BME communities. Our
@IndependentSage
experts have produced a report with clear recommendations. We urge the Govt not to let this become another BME report that collects dust in the corner, lives are at stake.
NEW: Independent SAGE has published a report ‘Disparities in the Impact of COVID-19 in Black & Minority Populations’.
We hope the govt will urgently respond to the 10 recommendations we believe necessary to protect lives & prevent further inequality
This year has been such a tough ride, we're all feeling it. At a time when so many just want to see and hug their family, just one more plea not to. Please stay safe, stay strong. It will get better.
We will be starting our first
@IndependentSage
meeting in one hour, you are inviting to join us by either following on the
@IndependentSage
Twitter account or live on YouTube
This was appalling from
@GMB
& Madeley - they must apologise. It's a pathetic line of questioning that has nothing whatsoever to do with the scientific advice given.
Thank you Deepti. I’m going to ask for a public apology from Madeley &
@GMB
& I hope others do also. A disgraceful way to treat a scientist, indeed anyone. And not sure he would have done that to a man.
It's clear we should have locked down weeks ago, yet here we are. Now the govt must take this opportunity to implement a fit for purpose test, trace, ISOLATE & SUPPORT system or we'll be back here before you know it.
@IndependentSage
The climate crisis is the biggest challenge we face today but there is still time.
You can read about why we have formed the
@ClimateCrisisAG
ahead of our first meeting this week.
In my view, it's hard not to look at the difference between the way in which vaccination has run compared to the failed test and trace system and draw the same conclusion.
I know people have become almost immune to this, but it's truly shocking how badly Test and Trace is doing on this key measure.
Remember 80% is needed to make the entire system viable.
Some have billed
@IndependentSage
as a 'rival' to the govts. To be absolutely clear that is not how we as a group see ourselves. Science is best when our community works together, on IndiSAGE we have a broad church of experts who are working hard to supplement existing advice.
It is very important to separate scientific advice from how it is used (or not). My fear is that science, which is key to getting through this pandemic, will be diminished in the eyes of the public by association with this government. Independent scientific communication key.
A 'ZERO COVID UK' was proposed yesterday as
@IndependentSage
published its 7th report. It is based on expert analysis of the current position and what needs to be done. It proposes a move to a 'ZERO COVID UK'. These are the seven top points.
BREAKING: Live at midday streamed on my Twitter and YouTube the
@IndependentSage
press conference for the launch of our report. Simply put the Government's strategy is not fit for purpose. We will be discussing our recommendations. I hope you can join us.
📢🚨Today we launch our new positioning paper to guide urgent global action on

📈🌎A critical pathway for a manageable future for our planet.

'What I see is a dangerously incoherent policy.'
Former Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Dave King believes the government needs to set the two-metre distance as a requirement on public transport in order to avoid retransmission of coronavirus after footage shows packed buses.
The Independent Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies has renewed its call for urgent reform of the government’s covid-19 test and trace system, urging that it be replaced by a system overseen by the NHS to avoid future lockdowns
"The issue of transparency has been lost by this government"
Former Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government Professor Sir David King says there should be transparency and no political bias when it comes to the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE)
#KayBurley
Tomorrow at 12
@IndependentSage
will once again be holding a public meeting, this time to discuss the re-opening of schools. It'll be streamed live on YouTube and Twitter from 12pm. Whilst we may not have all the answers we hope to address as many of your questions as we can.
This critically important analysis needs the urgent and full attention of all climate scientists, all political leaders, and policy makers. We must all learn to pull together to create a manageable future for humanity.
The British government has given Deloitte nearly £40m to oversee Test and Trace, new figures seen by openDemocracy reveal for the first time. And there's no sign of any contract, even. So just what are they doing for the money?
"The really frustrating thing is when Boris Johnson said, when we hit the 100,000 deaths milestone, we've truly done everything we can to minimise suffering and to minimise the loss of life... for me that is an insult to the families who have lost loved ones."
@Kit_Yates_Maths
Today's testimony from
@doctor_oxford
was so powerful and important. Please listen to her words, we take the right path out of this terrible situation.
Watch this incredibly powerful account from palliative care doctor and writer Rachel Clarke
@doctor_oxford
of what life has been like working on the NHS frontline and the challenges that lie ahead for exhausted and traumatised staff.
Many have reached out to me asking how they can support. If you are able to help in any small way we promise to continue
@IndependentSage
's important work.
Today, Independent SAGE is launching a crowdfunder to support our work.
Prof
@ReicherStephen
explains why we continue to speak out.
We believe the number of people dying is both avoidable & unacceptable.
Thank you 🙏
Shameful, if not surprising. The fears of giving presidency control to an oil state being realised. This must lead to increased scrutiny and accountability on every decision that comes from COP28. There is too much at stake
I was struck by this graph from
@chrischirp
, COVID is fast becoming a disease of the deprived and disadvantaged. The new government roadmap simply doesn't do enough to address this. We need action now to help support the people who need it most or the divide will only get wider.
And it continues to fail us at every turn. For over 8 months
@IndependentSage
has been calling for a proper Find, Test, Trace, Isolate and Support system to be put into the hands of our existing public health and NHS systems.
We are hugely grateful for the support that many of you have already given to
@IndependentSage
. There is so much more to do, we know these are challenging times but if you are able to donate we are eager to keep going.
Thank you to those who tuned in for our live press conference you can find the
@IndependentSage
recommendations here, the full report will follow shortly You can also rewatch the press conference if you wish
We never envisaged being here a year later and would all rather not be. But we must continue to push for transparency and to hold the Govt to account. I'm in awe of the group we assembled and the tireless work they put in simply because they believe it is the right thing to do.
They conclude that global warming will exceed 1.5 deg C in the 2020s, and reach 2.0 deg C before 2050. The ‘enormity’ of consequences calls for East-West co-operation in a way that meets developing world needs.
We believe there is a way out, it is not a simple road but one we must tread carefully. The vaccine is a key tool but it is no silver bullet. Here
@ReicherStephen
excellently talks through our
@IndependentSage
strategy - in full
"The thing we should be looking out for on Monday when we hear the road map from the prime minister is not only what is he going to lift, but what is he going to do, to make sure that infections stay down."
@ReicherStephen
#IndependentSAGE
A huge thank you to everybody involved, particularly those members of the public who took part. Some brilliant questions that we will go away and carefully consider.
Thank you to everybody who took part in our live
#IndependentSAGE
event today where we looked at the issue of when schools should return. In case you missed it you can rewatch it in full here
The co-authors have published a remarkably detailed analysis of global warming in the pipeline: . This analysis of the trends in temperature and greenhouse gas levels over the past 67 million years, and the last 800,000 is stark
The vaccine rollout has shown what might have been, and what could still be if the resource is put in the right hands. It appears clear that the government’s current strategy is almost entirely reliant on a successful vaccine rollout
This is a direct quote from Sir David King's 2006 foreword to the UK Government's Foresight report on infectious diseases -preparing for the future. How right he was! This failure has cost tens of thousands of lives and ruined many more.
In the face of Russia's war with Ukraine, finding new oil and gas reserves is fool's gold. In recent days we've seen news the Arctic is melting faster than anticipated at the same time as unprecedented heatwaves. There is a way forward, the path we're on is not it.
We must strongly reject policy and rhetoric in favour of fossil fuels as a response to the Ukraine war.
Expanding fossil fuels will bring NO increase in usable fuel to address the crisis.
It can only destroy any hope of a safe future for humanity.
Join us at 1pm today as
@IndependentSage
hold our latest public consultation on Test, Track and Trace with evidence from our interim report. We will be live streaming on Twitter and YouTube as normal.
We can only hope this report acts as a wakeup call for the Government and urge them to act now, put public health professionals in charge, and give us a fit for purpose system before it’s too late.
A former chief scientific adviser to the UK says Western countries are “frankly mismanaging” the pandemic right now.
@Sir_David_King
says although lockdowns are a “blunt instrument,” they “may be the only thing ... to bring [the virus] under control ... It’s not a magic trick.”
but we forget the role of Find, Test, Trace, Isolate and Support at our peril. We know COVID-19 is not simply going to vanish and I’m afraid without a fully functioning system in place we will once again be forced into using the blunt instrument of lockdowns in the future.
Having said that, the vaccine is not a silver bullet. The finishing line may be coming into sight but there is still a way to go. Without a functioning test and trace I am very worried about rising numbers. Please be sensible and stay safe.
Speaking at
#HuxleySummit
today
@Sir_David_King
explained that his key moment of 2020 took place on 23 Jan when
@TheLancet
published a paper from Chinese researchers on
#COVID19
. But despite the warning signs in this crucial paper, he asks why the UK didn’t act sooner.
It demonstrates that the temperature trends are closely matched by CO2 levels in the atmosphere. One conclusion is that doubling CO2 levels leads to a temperature change of 5+-1 deg C. We are close to doubling CO2 levels today compared to pre-industrial levels.
NEW: Independent SAGE will host a science briefing tomorrow, Friday 12.30pm. Prof Christina Pagel
@chrischirp
will present new analysis of latest govt data live on YouTube, Facebook & Twitter. We welcome questions from the press & public.
Alongside intervention with earth’s radiation imbalance to phase down today’s man-made geo-transformation of Earth’s climate. “Current political crises present an opportunity for reset, especially if younger people can grasp their situation.”
We will shortly be releasing our
@IndependentSage
report on the return of schools. You can join us live for the press conference at midday. As ever it will be streamed here, from the
@IndependentSage
account and YouTube
1/ I somewhat loathe to make this point but I do think it's important as many have asked. I've always been clear that when I was CSA scientific advice into govt was just that, advice using the best available science. It is then for the politicians to make the policy decisions.
NEW: Please read our letter from
@Sir_David_King
to
@CMO_England
on why we believe a Zero COVID UK strategy is an urgent necessity.
‘Our fear is that if the UK govt does not revise its approach we could see thousands of unnecessary & avoidable deaths’
I cannot speak highly enough of the work that
@allthecitizens
did last year. A true tour de force, to achieve what they have in a year is extraordinary.
✨Happy Bye-Bye-Trump day, all!✨It feels like as good a day as any to say THANK YOU to everyone who's helped with these projects. None of this would have been possible without the support of people on here
@independentSAGE
,
@FBOversight
,
@allthecitizens
. Bye Trump! Hello 2021 🙏
The crises covering the N Hem now - following 4 successive summers - means oil, gas & coal must be phased out quickly. And that means this will be another stranded asset. The public will surely see this as a desperate act of electioneering, putting our future at severe risk.
2/ If you are asking a scientist what their political persuasion is when they are giving scientific not political advice then I'm afraid you have missed the point. I did not ask one member of
@IndependentSage
about their political ideology because it is totally irrelevant.
For those still unclear of the science that underpins extreme weather relating to climate change. Last year,
@ClimateCrisisAG
produced a paper laying this out plainly. Things are happening even faster than we imagined, we simply must act now.
It has taken the Biden/Harris administration less than a week to deliver a comprehensive COVID strategy. Once again, it begs the question, where is ours?
Get a strategy! Closing the weekly
@independentSAGE
briefing, our Chair
@Sir_David_King
, former HMG Chief Scientist, suggested the UK government follow the new US Biden-Harris administration and actually have a
#COVID19
strategy.
Global consensus is hard, changing the status quo is harder, but we are at the point where
#LaterIsTooLate
. Current & future generations depend on us standing up for the science that can deliver a safe future for humanity. Fossil fuel phase out is essential
#COP28
must deliver.

🚨NEW CCAG REPORT:
📈A momentous global effort is needed to address the near-inevitability of crossing the 1.5C threshold, bringing the planet back below this 'climate guardrail' as rapidly as possible.
"Such is the furore about SAGE’s composition and operations, that David King, the UK’s former chief scientific adviser, established an alternative “Independent SAGE” with a diverse membership including from public health."
#IndependentSAGE
I wrote a piece for
@FoundSciTech
about the importance of open and transparent scientific advice to government, something that has never been more important.
At every stage, from the initial outbreak in the spring to the relapse in the autumn the government has acted too slowly. Now is the time for Boris Johnson to be brave, to make unpopular decisions – in short, to lead. For many, Boxing day will be too late.
THREAD: The latest

With that said, analysis shows that even with the commitments made and re-affirmed in Sharm El-Sheikh the world remains on track for 2.7. By any measure, that represents a bleak future for humanity.
If we act nimbly and quickly, we can bring climate risks to a manageable level, says
@Sir_David_King
