#BlackHistoryMonth The 1st black person in space was Cuban Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez. Born in 1942 in Guantánamo, Méndez was a crewmember of the 1980 Soviet Soyuz 38. He became the 1st person from a country in the Western Hemisphere other than the United States to travel into space.
