I'm sooo tired of seeing doomsday tweets about Erik ten Hag not prioritizing the signing of a 'build-up' midfielder. His system simply does not *require*a 1st phase specialist in MF because the back 4 + GK are primarily relied on for clean progression

An aspect that has generally not been considered in the discourse surrounding Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United is his coaching style, and its impact on the team’s fortunes. All coaches fall under two broad categories based on coaching style — Enhancers and Enforcers. <THREAD🚨>

People don't get it. The way to create more propitious conditions for Rashford is not to “move him inside and have Shaw hold width” That suggestion is simplistic and counterintuitive, as it disregards Rashford's weaknesses. The true solution is in Fluctuating Width. <THREAD🚨>

An increase in K. Mainoo's playing time as the LCM should be followed by signing a DM that has strengths in his[KM's] weak areas & can complement him adequately in & out-of-possession. The DM must be; - tall. - a large-spaces player able to cover ground extensively & quickly.

I'm a big fan of Arsenal’s nominal 3-3-4 attacking structure, particularly the 3-3 base. The structure offers certain structural advantages and crucially, fits Arsenal’s players better than the previous 3-2-5. It’s one that also suits the Man. United team. <THREAD🚨>

Most roaming CMs / #8s are unsuitable for conversion to static single pivots but some can definitely be converted to ideal, positionally-disciplined #6s . To determine the possibility, the key things to look out for are Intelligence and Temperament. Mini-Thread🚨.

In game-models / systems like Ange Postecoglu’s that defend with 2 players in the last line of defence or like Erik ten Hag’s that defend with a single pivot ahead of 3 last-line players, it’s imperative that the CBs are ‘aggressor’ / ‘stopper’ types. <THREAD🚨>

i don’t believe in the “high-intensity training causes injuries” talk. it’s important to be able to match the intensity of opponents, as well as to be adequately conditioned for the physical demands of the game-model, that’s the essence of physical training. the issue then? 🧵

Rashford is one of the most threatening wingers itw -whether you like him or not- and he's still not being used maximally. With Højlund, -and a new RW, hopefully- the burden to be an outlet for the team will be lessened and will allow him to impact the game in other areas.

the herd mentality in the FT community is widespread and deeply rooted. little critical thinking. all it takes is one or two big accounts to tweet something, then everyone else runs with it. the same tweets everywhere, even from people who don’t understand nor can defend it lol

The earlier iteration of the structure featured the LCM forming the build-up unit with the CBs & DM as both FBs pushed up to the higher lines of attack but EtH eventually switched the dynamics, with one of the FBs instead taking the LCM's place in the build-up unit as both the..

this is similar to what Erik wants our build-up to look like; positionally fluid but cohesive, chaotic but orderly and incisive. however, our players haven't reached the required level of understanding of the techno-tactical aspects for proper execution.

- change of tactical intent wrt pace/directness of attack. - lower levels of the players' understanding of the techno-tactical elements of the game-model. - lower levels of technical capacities of players. - poor conditioning of the players. just some reasons why.

2. Luke Shaw, while great with driving carries from deep and well-timed off-ball runs, is no 1v1 specialist. For Full-backs / Wing-backs who can't provide qualitative superiority in 1v1s from a standing start, it's best to let them arrive into spaces out-wide, not occupy them.

final note📝: this thread is based purely on coaching styles, not the strategical and tactical direction of the team under any of the mentioned managers. that is a different topic of discussion, one for another day, till then... Love, Silva♥️

it's obvious that Erik wants his LCM to be a vertical shuttler between all phases but he seems to prioritize having attacking midfielders that can contribute deeper rather than natural deeper CMs that can contribute further forward and that's an indication of where he wants Mount

Ten Hag: "Christian Eriksen came in last season and for the first time in his life he played in a deeper role. That was the ambition for Christian and it is also the ambition for Mason [Mount]. So he wants to be more multi-functional, and that is the way I see football."

3. Unlike De Zerbi who seeks to create a 'pull' effect and create space behind by positioning 6 players in the build-up unit, ten Hag wants the opposite 'push' effect, situating 6 players in the higher lines in order to create more space & time for the build-up unit.

While potentially beneficial in the ideal tactical environment, Casemiro's current tactical role is more of a hindrance to the team as it is now and needs to be adjusted. `This thread details his role, how it -vely affects the team & possible solutions to the problems. [Thread]

players do better with ‘Enhancers’ — coaches with low-interference management styles and loose guiding principles that help create platforms for the players to thrive. This is why Don Carlo can win La Decima at Real Madrid..and then somewhat fail to meet expectations at Everton.

see difference in mentality — “installing a love for defending” knowing the need for the “door to be shut” “compact defence” “physicality” then, “ridiculous😡, 4th conceded goals” impact of difference in mentality —one team has conceded the least shots, the other, the most.

..receptions and overall ⚽-control in the tight spaces BTLs. When receiving ‘to-feet’, it's important for him to feel zero pressure from behind, he won't get that from central starting positions.

As our squad rebuild continues,I recently looked out for RBs that are better tactical fits than Dalot/AWB for the role EtH's system requires of his RBs and I found 3 satisfactory options so far. Below is a mini-report on these players and how they can fit into the team. [Thread]

Scene 1. - Directs his touches away from pressure & into space. - Uses his arms to increase range of control. - Expertly shields the ball with his body + his low centre of gravity affords him greater balance under pressure. - Varies weight of his touches from heavy[to further..

we've largely been poor in the out-of-possession phase, lacked compactness, lacked co-ordination, poor channel coverage + both Mainoo & Amrabat on YCs, Great! our box-defending has been nice though, it's why we haven't conceded.

To address our half-functional high press, I suggest adopting a similar structure/approach to Newcastle's, with a narrow 1st line & a wider 2nd line. It would allow us to maintain the intentions Erik has with the current pressing scheme and solve our well-known issues. [Thread].

•PLANS• Throughout his time at Ajax, ten Hag showed a strong preference for the 3-1-3-3 in-possession structure in the advanced phases, with the intent to control, dominate and break down the opposition primarily via patient, calculated possession play.

The acquisition of R.Højlund was also another step in that direction, being a more traditional CF[in line with the requirements of the game-model] & a potent outlet but alas, the failed attempt to get a progressive, natural RCB and the injuries to Shaw & Lisandro[key progressors]
