Stuff about sidewalks in Durham. Often bad, sometimes good. Hopefully we can make it better. Creator of @RecklessRoxboro

North America: 92% car trips This kind of capture of movement does not come from a strong American preference for driving. It’s the direct result of zoning, parking mandates, and sprawl.
The American built environment is so degraded that many Americans think that an area is very walkable if you can physically walk to a destination. Anyone who has spent much time in Very Walkable cities (including NYC) knows that there are neighborhoods where the majority of

Glad I wasn't in the crosswalk this time...
After behaving badly on Cleveland St, these two race down Elliott St and Queen St while blowing through stop signs. Other than crossing @NCDOT's dangerous Roxboro, this all involved @movesafedurham streets we could fix today. Luckily no one hurt this time.

Does the new UDO/LDC legalize this by right on every bus corridor to support our fare free @GoDurhamTransit ridership @mayorofbullcity, @Javiera4Durham, @carlfordurham, @NateBakerDurham, @Shanetta4Durham, @mattfordurham? Looks to be RX-3 or CX-3?
Very few are building this kind of product today. I'm honored to be working with one of the few groups in the US doing this now here in the Houston area. And we've got 22 units coming down the pipeline!

For no reason at all related to anything going on right now, Andrea Bocelli singing Nessun Dorma at the Olympics instantly makes me think of this scene in Sum of All Fears:

On Transit Equity Day, it's worth saying: equity shouldn't depend on car ownership. I wrote about why cities need housing & zoning that support transit-oriented & multi-modal options for living, not require car dependency. Link in reply.

If you are having such issues with power demand, will you support customers having access to balcony/plugin solar options like what was recently legalized in Utah? Or does that cut into profits too much?
Duke Energy is urging customers in the Carolinas to reduce energy use during periods of peak demand on Monday, Feb. 2, from 4-10 a.m., to help lessen the energy demand on the power grid and reduce the potential of isolated power outages. https://t.co/ZZ8NMjV8hz.

As pointed out in the reply, we have several surface parking lots that could be this instead. Does the new UDO legalize this by right over more sprawl, especially near transit? @mayorofbullcity, @Shanetta4Durham, @NateBakerDurham, @Javiera4Durham, @mattfordurham, @carlfordurham
It's been fun to try out @UrbanCourtyard's new Courtyard Composer tool. Living in a courtyard apartment this year has been great and it would be amazing if these could become an option back in the U.S.

Another great article on why our 1 way @NCDOT streets are such a failure for safety & the general well being of our urban areas. This is why we need them to let @movesafedurham return Roxboro/Mangum & Duke/Gregson to their original 2 way configuration.

Hey @movesafedurham, let's kick up those wonderful mini traffic circles a notch with green bump outs like this. Physical guidance is better than signs that beg for compliance that isn't enforced.
Simple bump-outs on 4 corners where it's already illegal to park plus modest traffic circle as an obstacle. Very effective traffic calming. 🙌

Tweeting exactly at the reckless speeding threshold during winter storm & still getting em. 85 percentile is at ~35mph. Mother nature gets drivers to (mostly) go the speed limit on @NCDOT streets. Can @movesafedurham just permanently ice this street for safety if we can't 2 way?
2026-01-25 special winter storm edition All speeders over 50MPH (15+ over the limit!) detected today will be posted in reply to this tweet.

Doing this better should be top of mind with the UDO rewrite. How do we shift to the density required by default (instead of big corporate rezonings) to achieve our goals @mayorofbullcity, @Javiera4Durham, @carlfordurham, @NateBakerDurham, @Shanetta4Durham, & @mattfordurham?
