If I aired a highlight reel of your most selfish life moments and most shameful thoughts, you'd seem like an awful person. If I aired a reel of your best, kindest moments, you'd seem like a saint. But people aren't highlight reels, and the unedited cut is always a messy mix!

As much as I believe in the power of redemption I must confess that I have very little evidence that people do change behaviors with subordinates or trainees. If you are a PI bullying an immigrant trainee in the midst of Covid and visa delays you may be beyond redemption.

A year ago, if you read about government funding being used to measure the velocity of a sneeze, it would have been tempting to call it โwasteful spending.โ But, much of this seemingly wasteful research is now saving lives. Why do we need government funding for science? A thread.

A PhD is a certification that you have gained the knowledge and skill set needed to be successful in one of many sets of career options. It is not a status symbol. It does not make you better than anyone else.

10 interviews out of 427 applications, after what most of us would think an amazing 34 papers in postdoc. The academic dream is "only for a select few" who have more patience than passion. To put it in perspective, that's 42 weeks of just making applications (4 hr/app, 40 hr wk).
I wrote a blog post about my experience on the #academic job market, https://t.co/4VxTRCBZpq A huge thanks to the community on @FuturePI_Slack, @ProfessorIsIn, and to all my mentors! #newPI

Hello Twitter! If you have #kids interested in #science, definitely follow @FrontYoungMinds. My new article there explains how #butterflies have different patterns on different wing surfaces. It was great fun writing for kids, hope you like it! #scicomm
