Hey
@cvspharmacy
my CANCER patient went to fill her pain medication prescription and the pharmacist refused to fill if bc she felt uncomfortable and then KEPT the prescription so she got readmitted to the hospital in severe pain. This is unacceptable!!!
My cancer patients can’t get their imaging scans with contrast bc of this shortage. Tell me again how covid19 is over and it’s not impacting every aspect of how we are delivering healthcare?
I am here to tell you, if you are indoors and not at home, you should be wearing a good mask, ideally N95 or KN94.
#COVID19
numbers are rising fast, new variants are highly contagious, and more and more
#LongCovid
I have spent the last 3 days trying to get chemo approved for a patient, and this whole time my patient is not getting treatment as his cancer progresses. An insurance company has decided they know better than the patients oncologist what chemotherapy regimen they should be on.
Told a peer to peer reviewer this week that if they refuse my patients standard of care imaging, I would need their full name so I could include it in the chart for why care was being denied to protect myself in case I was sued...Imaging approved

Hi
@POTUS
. Lots of ppl traveling sick with
#covid19
and not following quarantine/isolation recommendations from
@CDCgov
(which aren’t enough as you know since you tested positive for 16 days). It’s time to reinstitute masks on planes since it was stopped w no rhyme or reason.
So we have:
- Waning immunity as we get further away from booster doses
- BA.2 variant more transmissible
- Risk mitigations being removed (e.g. masking)
- Kids <5 still not vaxxed
- Federal funding running out for
#COVID19
response initiatives
- Surges in other nations
...so...
.
@CDCDirector
@CDCgov
the hands off approach to
#COVID19
isn't working.I know more ppl infected now than I have this entire pandemic...at what pt do u admit we need to reinstate indoor masking/risk mitigations? Pretending this isn't happening isn't working for most of the country
So for those of you waiting for the
@CDCgov
@CDCDirector
to tell you to start masking again, they likely won't anytime soon. Things are too political. But I'm here to tell you
#COVID19
numbers are going up, wear a mask (ideally N95 or KN94 indoors) and test before gatherings.
Just your daily reminder that people without medical degrees or background should NOT be in charge of creating MEDICAL policies, laws related to MEDICINE or MEDICAL CARE. There is a reason you go to a surgeon for your operation, an oncologist for your cancer and not a politician.
Between the AHA stating HCW don’t need to put on protective gear before starting CPR and the CDC saying HCW can go back to work 5 days after a (+)
#covid19
test we are a long way from the 7pm applause for frontline workers part of this pandemic. Feels like our lives don’t matter.
Just throwing this out there...I've been wearing N95 masks almost daily for the last 2+ yrs, and as needed for patient care prior to the pandemic. My nose hasn't been cut, I can breathe fine, and I've been able to protect myself from things like
#COVID19
(and TB pre-pandemic)
I feel like a lot of studies are coming out w results that say: this intervention was proven not to work when ppl didn’t do it correctly. And ppl are interpreting that to mean: the intervention didn’t work.
To be clear. Masks work if you actually wear them over your nose & mouth
Getting asked this a lot, posting here in case you fall into one of these categories.
PCR (+) Rapid (-) = COVID
PCR (-) Rapid (+) = COVID
Symptoms, PCR (-) Rapid (-) = COVID
Symptoms, can't get a test = COVID
Basically, we are seeing SO MUCH COVID assume it's COVID. Quarantine.
Just FYI, as a physician, before healing can take place, the problem needs to be fixed.
As an oncologist, before healing can begin, the tumor must be removed, or it will grow and spread. Let’s fix the underlying pathology before we start talking about healing and moving on.
As President
@realDonaldTrump
stated last night, it is time to heal and move on.
If Speaker Pelosi pushes impeachm ent in the last days of the Trump presidency it will do more harm than good.I’m hopeful President-elect Biden sees the damage that would be done from such action.
Why are we still not requiring masks in high risk situations like in public transit?! Airplanes? Crowded gatherings?! Come on this is just common sense now
Yes. This is how I continue to grocery shop. With an N95 mask. Because
#covid19
variants are highly transmissible, numbers are going up rapidly around the country, and I will do everything I can to avoid
#LongCovid
and protect my kids from exposures.
#ImmunizeUnder5s
Curious, if say, something airborne like...tuberculosis was spreading rapidly throughout our country...and thousands of people were contracting TB...would we be wearing masks then? And would the
@CDCgov
recommend we all
#WearAMask
? Or just live our lives and get TB. Just curious.
Convinced 6 people to get the
#CovidVaccine
in clinic and they all walked over to get their first shot today! I even walked 1 patient over who was nervous to stand with her as she got hers. Spend the time. Answer questions. Go the extra mile. This is how we get through this.
Update: still has NOT been approved. Had my sixth phone call and now had to fax the same information to an external review. Cancer care delayed. My time wasted.
Why the heck is some judge in Florida able to make a decision that LITERALLY impacts the health and safety of millions of ppl across this country.

Hi airlines like
@united
and
@AmericanAir
@SouthwestAir
. You know how there are so many flight delays and staffing shortages? You know how you could fix that? Reinstitute masks on planes. SUPER easy fix that helps you too. And you CAN do that. Just a thought.
#WearAMask
The CDC sending everyone out in the world 5 days after being diagnosed w
#COVID19
bc there AREN'T ENOUGH tests in 2022 = Don't wear a mask bc there AREN'T ENOUGH masks in 2020... Scientific recommendations cannot be based on what supplies we have, we need BETTER
#scicomm
Posting a friendly reminder...in medicine, just because you decide you are "over" something, it doesn't mean the medical problem goes away. We can't wish away cancer or diabetes, just like we can't wish away
#COVID19
. Our "new normal" should include
#masks
and
#vaccines
.

Thread: Something happened in my home state of Michigan today that made me sad. I wasn't going to comment initially, but then I went to Facebook & saw people I grew up w, who know my husband and I are physicians and call us for medical advice, were defending these actions.
This is absolutely horrible. We published on the online harassment of physicians and scientists. This just another example of how online harassment can translate to in person harassment. This is dangerous. We are watching Twitter become weaponized.
Getting calls and texts from…everywhere
🔥Can’t get an ambulance
🔥Can’t get a bed in the hospital
🔥Cancer surgery canceled
🔥Entire nursing floor has
#covid19
🔥Waited in the ER for over 12 hours, stayed in the ER for 3 days
🔥 No ICU beds, manage what you can on the floor
PSA: A LOT of people who have been doing everything right, masking, vaccinated, boosted, social distancing, bubbling, are getting
#COVID19
right now bc it is everywhere. Please do not feel guilty. This isn’t your fault. ❤️
Still not approved. And another insurance company told me that my patient can only get 3 PET scans in his lifetime, he already met his quota so we can’t use PET scans to monitor his response to cancer treatments anymore. These are just 2 of thousands of ex’s in my career so far.
Best.
#Diwali
. Ever. My 7yo jumped out of bed this morning to get her first
#Covid19Vaccine
. Her twin 4yo brothers are anxiously waiting their turn. We do everything in our power to protect our families. Now one huge step closer to fully protecting mine.
#ThisIsOurShot
@IMPACT4HC
Also, if you are wondering y there are so many flight delays/cancellations, when
#covid19
is left to run rampant with no risk mitigation, everyone will be short staffed. Including the airlines. Want to improve travel experience? Require masks on transport.

I want to share a brief reflection on perspective. A🧵 Many times in my life I have been told that I am too bubbly, too verbose, too excitable, too loud... too much. I have been told to speak softer, speak less, not show my enthusiasm, not show my excitement...its unprofessional.
Hi
@DrOz
Things politicians should NOT be deciding
- if my patient gets chemo
- if my patient should be pregnant
- when it’s time to run a code
- what medications we should prescribe
- if a woman’s body belongs to her local political leaders
- if a patient needs surgery
…
@DrLeanaWen
But...there isn't a downside to continuing to wear masks until kids <5 can get vaccinated, better access to treatments available, better ventilation set up.
Masks are not a major hindrance, getting
#LongCOVID
is...why are we so quick to get rid of the one thing we know works???
Yes you can exercise in a mask. Ran 3 miles. Did some abs. Still wearing a mask bc my twin 4yos can’t get the vaccine yet. Feeling healthy and protected.

Hi insurance companies. When my CANCER PATIENTS come in asking for a flu shot, please explain why you are denying covering it unless they go to their PCP to get the shot? How does that make any sense?
This last year and a half, I completely lost site of work/life "balance" and my parents said something profound to me but so simple.
"Lot's of people are going to want your time. It's up to you who you give that time to."
Leaving this here for anyone who needs to hear it.
I feel like people forget, HCW are people too. We also miss spending time with friends and family. We also miss going out to dinners. We also worry about our kids getting sick. The stress everyone has felt during the pandemic, we feel it too.
As an oncologist I can tell you, procedures like removing a cancer are NOT elective, although they get grouped in that category when
#Covid19
is surging. So when you say “I’m vaccinated, this surge won’t affect me” I want to remind you, elective just means it’s not an emergency.
Time to make it social media official!

thread/tweetorial on how to use social media AND STAY professional AND authentic
Dear patient, I am sorry ur extremely important urgent scan has been delayed. I have been on hold with your insurance company for over an hr when I should be seeing pts trying to make them understand that ur PET scan is necessary to help workup your metastatic cancer.
#frustrated
Hi! Real live triple board certified doctor here telling you that no, we do not have to try urine in medical school…or ever…why on earth do I need to tweet this out…
Dr. Oz said “of course” he has tasted his own urine, claims medical school forces doctors to taste it, and said his curiosity for it started when he was a kid.
Oz: “Aren’t you curious about your urine?”
@CDCDirector
As long as there are no mask mandates, everyone should be required to show proof of a negative COVID test prior to flying. To limit it to China is short sighted and nonsensical.
Hi
@CDCgov
. My twins are not going to be 5 until October. My 7yo is vaxxed. School starts in a week. These new regulations don’t seem to be taking into account a large part of the population that’s particularly vulnerable…help me understand
Letting a bunch of people who have never treated a patient or gone to medical school make decisions on how we practice medicine and take care of patients in this country is bonkers…
@elonmusk
This is disgusting. Attacking someone who literally dedicated his life to public health and helped us as a nation navigate a pandemic while constantly being attacked, despite the fact his ultimate goal was to keep us safe, is despicable.
Hi leaders across the country. Is this thing on? Is anyone listening? This messaging "everyone's going to get it" isn't helping. We need mask requirements when indoors, vaccine requirements for engaging in society, like going into restaurants. We need help. Please do something.
I haven’t been posting much original content lately bc, tbh, I’ve been a bit burned out. And school is about to start. But I’ve been seeing some wacky posts and theories lately, some from “respected” HCW who, I personally feel, have become more contrarian for personal gain.
When people ask why we keep posting, sharing, begging, imploring people to stay home, this is why. Please, there is still time to change your Thanksgiving plans to virtual. It’s not worth it.

Unfortunately, with the amt of unpaid work we do in academics, until journals start providing some sort of compensation for reviewers, I doubt the problem will improve.
Gun violence is not a political issue.
COVID19 is not a political issue.
Womens Health is not a political issue.
Politicians talk about physicians staying in our lane? This is all our lane. This is public health. It's not politics. You stay in your lane and let us do our jobs.
Working on a talk. A comment I get during these talks "women aren't harassed, they complain too much." A colleague gave GR and was told women should just leave medicine if they can't handle it. Please share a time u were harassed/ treated inappropriately in your training/career.
@DrLeanaWen
It feels like someone picked an arbitrary date and said "This is the day we say we beat covid19, let's pretend it's over" without any real metrics or scientific rationale as to why all of sudden we are rushing to remove masks no matter the numbers.
I couldn’t get my cancer patients a STAT lower extremity duplex ultrasound to rule out a DVT bc insurance requires a prior auth. So I had to send her to the ER and delay her chemo. Our healthcare system is so broken.
@JoyHenningsenMD
Yes it is RIDICULOUS that all of this is happening, but we all want to keep our heads in the sand and pretend that
#COVID19
isn't impacting every aspect of our care delivery.
Just heard a fantastic Cate Blanchette quote “The women who really change the game, are always the women that no one knows what to do with initially.”
@somedocs
#WomenInMedicine
@DrLeanaWen
Well definitely not until AFTER kids under 5 can get vaccinated. Why the rush to do it now when a significant part of our population still can't get the vaccine? We can talk endpoints when everyone has access to the vaccine
"She's so passionate about what she is working on. It comes through when she speaks."
Her words made me pause and think, how many times had I been told the exact opposite
I share this for a few reasons.
1. Don't let others muzzle who you are and what you are passionate about.
If you trust physicians and nurses to take care of you when you are sick, why wouldn’t you trust us when we are all recommending the
#COVIDVaccine
?

Newborn at home, paged all night
3rd year fellow on call
Drove 45 min to hospital at 7am

When did we stop trusting

@michaelsharma
@JHowardBrainMD
Really disappointing that you chose to put out this messaging when so many people are still getting diagnosed, kids under 5 still can’t get vaxxed, and we know there can be long term neuro complications to getting this virus unlike other URIs
1. Regarding whether masks work…I can’t believe we are still having this discussion. Surgeons have used masks for years for infection control. And re:
#COVID19
the data is there. For those calling for placebo controlled trials, those would be unethical.
Point of the story, surround yourself with people who are different than you, have different opinions then you, challenge you. In doing so, your life will be richer, and you may find someone perfect for what you are looking for that you wouldn’t have otherwise known existed.
@DrLeanaWen
@CDCgov
But that doesn't mean it is evidence to back up what you are saying. You are just sharing your own opinions. Again, kids under 5 still can't get vaccinated. As a society, are they not as important to protect as everyone else? Why remove masks before they can get vaxxed
