I wonder if we will be lucky enough to have Kamala Harris as president despite the current of public opinion that tells her she can't do it. Even four years of that mind game would be an upgrade from a president seemingly doing random stuff to feel powerful at this point

... upwards of 7 weeks!?! I guess I'm supposed to just accept that Congress can get paid for 7 weeks and still get lauded as heroes for literally just paying federal workers and reopening the government that should already be open? There are no words for how I feel about it all.

@WakeUp2Politics At a time when unemployment keeps trending upward, it is wild to see Congress not work for 5 whole weeks. Surely they have other work they could be doing? I wonder how this will weigh into the 2026 midterms, or if we'll have forgotten and/or normalized all of this by then.

“Surely they have other work they could be doing?” Do they ever! Per my analysis, there are 144 bills ready for a House vote: measures on rural health care, veterans, Russia sanctions, and more. But the chamber has left Washington for 41 days instead. https://t.co/oefFZwfSzg

Since 1971, the House has taken 22 recesses lasting 40+ days. 8 were regular summer recess. 13 were for the longstanding practice of breaking during fall of an election year. We are living in the only outlier, and Mike Johnson has no plans to return:

NEW: The House has never taken a break like this before. Since the advent of the modern congressional calendar, the House has only ever recessed for 40+ days due to summer or campaigning during an election year. Until now: we’re on Day 41. ~More analysis in the link below~
