Personal news:
After 5 years, I’ve decided to move on from AM640. As senior producer and on-air contributor, it’s been a wild ride with lots of laughter, a few tears, and an incredible learning experience.
For now, I plan on catching up on sleep and spending time with my family.
Growing up, I thought beauty was blonde hair and blue eyes, because that’s what all my barbies looked like.
How things have changed! My daughter will see herself everywhere.
I’m at Celebration Square celebrating Eid at an amazing Eid festival. It’s packed here. Young white male pulls up to the fair and is swerving. Cops rush over to him. He gets out, crouches with hands over his face and says “I was thinking about doing something”. -1
WHERE ARE THE OUTSPOKEN FEMALE INFECTIOUS DISEASE SPECIALISTS?
I'm looking for you. The men are great, don't get me wrong. But every female IDS I approach declines interviews. The men are always ready to go.
I want to talk to you. I want your voice/research/analysis to be heard.
Judge tells Mr Zameer “you’re free to go. My deepest apologies for what you’ve been through.” A court observer makes an utterance behind me upon hearing Molloy’s remarks
Margaret Northrup is hugging Lisa Forbes. Sobbing continues from Zameer and his family.
The Umar Zameer fundraiser has officially surpassed its goal of 200k this afternoon.
In Zameer’s words: Canada did not let injustice happen. Thank you Canada.
Take a look at how Canadians came together to support this man here:
As we await the verdict from the Zameer trial, here’s a pic of the police officers from *that* evening as they rushed his car while he had his pregnant wife and 2yo toddler with him. Northrup in mask. Last thing I’m thinking is that these people are plainclothes police officers.
Only two brown families on my whole street. She went out and gave the entire street samosas for Diwali last Thursday. I got thanked for the samosas all weekend. Even after they had long convos with her. 😶
Two years ago, I started walking 10km a day. Last year, I met a woman who started walking with me.
This morning, we are at a group of 10-12 women who hike every weekend. It’s amazing what you can manifest and the universe brings it to you. Happy Sunday!
About 6 months ago, in the midst of a pandemic, the husband put away his smart phone and pulled out an old flip phone. I laughed and laughed in his face about how ridiculous that was.
A thread.
1
Did we ever discuss what John Tory was wearing at any time minus the Raps blazer?
But since we are,
@oliviachow
’s skirt is made by local designer
@Anu_Raina
. She tells me her phone has been ringing off the hook, and everyone wants the skirt.
This happened about 30 minutes ago right as we were walking in. Who knows what he meant or what the situation is. But in these times, people are vigilant and extra careful. -3
Cops keep asking him what he has been taking. He’s stumbling, he starts crying and they bring him over to the sidewalk. They move his car to the side of the road. He’s crouched and they are talking to him. People around were scared. No one should ever feel like this. -2
It won’t be 2 weeks. It will be much longer. Prepare yourselves, your children, your families. Do whatever you can to mentally survive this.
We are all going to drop a few balls over the coming weeks/months. Go easy on yourselves and your kids. We are in survival mode now.

I spent March break in Guyana, South America with my husband and four kids. Was an incredible trip and my first time to that continent. This is a story about culture, caimans, and the legacy of indentured labour…from a South Asian-Canadian perspective.
This is what is happening on the 401 right now. That truck is completely caved in and it’s a major accident. Police everywhere and ambulances as well. Highway closed in both directions.
Major accident on the 401 East right now. Both directions closed. I haven’t budged and there are at least a dozen police cars and several ambulances. Lots of smoke everywhere.
My husband and I have discovered the key to a long lasting marriage. Every evening, after the kids go to bed, we scroll through Netflix for 45 minutes to an hour arguing about what we should watch.
And then we go to bed.
We have accepted that this is our quality time together.
I went from laughing to being mildly jealous. He looks and acts so free.
He’s a tech entrepreneur and quoted Biggy: never get high on your own supply.
He is refusing tech culture/expectations.
But he’s got me wondering..is the inconvenience of not having a smart phone worth it?
Working on a docu-series for Global News on why some cultures don’t put their elderly in nursing homes and I’m blown away by the honour some people hold in caregiving for their elders. It’s so beautiful.
Finished the trip in Trinidad then Tobago (that water!). Doubles and bussupshot! But the Archives office will stay with me. I won’t forget this trip and hope my kids have a stronger sense of identity. All the way back to that port in 1867.
Thanks for reading if you got this far!
CAREER HIGH! I hosted Toronto Today on
@am640
every morning this week and had the time of my life! So many great guests, good conversations, and an amazing team.
Talk Radio is changing.
Fasting, while virtual schooling young kids, and working? A recipe for disaster I think. Ramadan begins tonight at sunset. So much anxiety this year.
Here's a guide to supporting your fasting peeps/friends/co-workers this month c/o
@fahmidakamali
.
My heart goes out to teachers today.
Kid 3’s teacher’s two toddlers are having full out tantrums on screen as she’s trying to teach 25 kids.
Half of kid1’s class is missing.
Kid 2’s stressed about virtual.
Kid 4’s JK class is crying/screaming.
Teachers are heroes.
Now, he disconnects and is actually disconnected. I explained how inconvenient it is for me re: errands/kids stuff/communication. He said his mental health has improved so much. Even his quality time with all of us. He’s actually present. He doesn’t care that it’s inconvenient. 4
Then I/we noticed his mood improving. His memory. His patience. His attention span. His work/life balance. I would finish work and continue to scroll or respond to emails. He would finish work and be done with it and present with us.
I continued to laugh albeit not as hard.

STOP SAYING KIDS ARE RESILIENT. That doesn't mean we drag them through the mud because we think they can handle it. What we are doing to them is not okay. They deserve to be a part of our decision making.

June 6, 2021. Zameer ran over Northrup on July 2, 2021. Every Muslim in this country was terrified in those weeks after. Strangers cornering you in a parking lot? I would’ve also sped off not knowing they were police.

Get outside daily! Mental health first and everything else always falls into place.
Working moms, we need to do it differently this time so that we don’t get burned out. Take care of yourself first. Oxygen mask theory. Ask for help. Park play dates. Rotate at the park so a parent can watch them. It takes a village. They won’t help us. We have to help ourselves.

to announce (imminently) schools will go online for the next 2 weeks. As bitter a pill for some who will struggle mightily during this time, this will afford some needed time to upgrade safety measures, defuse the surge of Omicron.
My mother came to Canada from India in the 1960s and opened up her own medical clinic, became the ONLY Muslim WOC obstetrician in Ottawa and went on to deliver 1000s of babies. Her medical career spanned almost 60 years.

Fun fact:
Umar Zameer’s lawyer

was also the lawyer for Soleiman Faqiri’s family and worked to deliver a homicide verdict against prison guards when all odds were against Faqiri. This took 7 years. Not all heroes wear capes.

Halfway through ‘rona, I accidentally missed the cut off for a free-trial version of a workout app and had to pay for the full year. Of course, I decided to start using it asap, and I officially ran my first 5K ever today. Such a huge achievement!

Today I'm thinking about the single moms doing it all on their own.
The women who have to choose between going into work or staying home with the kids.
The kids in abusive homes who needed schools to be open for their safety.
It's a tough day for parents and kids in Ontario.
Eid Mubarak fam. This is the first time in years that I’ve been this relaxed on Eid. No (self-imposed) deadlines/emails/pressure/distractions. Even made sawiyen, a traditional Eid breakfast vermicelli dish.
Enjoy the day for anyone celebrating!
I’ve got 4 kids and 3 don’t have a cellphone. The high schooler just got one but never uses it. They begged, pleaded, cried and eventually gave up. People make fun of us all the time. Sure it can be inconvenient but it’s worth it. Kids do not need a phone.
As parents, I think we know the true solution to solving the cellphone problem plaguing classrooms and society.
It's simple, don't buy our kids phones.

My new friend Julian Whyte-Lewis who is standing on the 401 with me right now has given me permission to share his video moments before the accident happened. You can see a police car in the opposite direction on 401EB chasing a white SUV that slammed head on into the truck.
I have just learned that this is another vehicle that has wrapped around the front of the truck. The vehicle was going the wrong way on the 401 and slammed head on into the truck. The truck driver is OK. This information is from witnesses who saw it happen and not police.

Struck a deal w/the kids. They get $1 for every morning they bike ride before school starts. Oldest scoffed at a buck and slept in, youngest is too young. Two middles took off discussing the candy they’ll buy with $5 on Friday.

I was taking calls for the show today and my two eldest started having an all out screaming/yelling/hitting fight in the background. At this point, I don't even flinch, care, or bother. Callers/co-workers/guests better get used to the chaos in a working mother's background.

This part was tough. We went to the National Archives. 22 thick, binded books with ships and names of people from India/China/Portugal. But no Blacks. I inquired and was told the slave tradesmen did not ask Blacks for names. It was irrelevant. They needed to be strong and obey.
Every Sunday, we have a family meeting. Helps w/communication, airing grievances, etc. We also write a love note to a family member and add to our Love Jar. In the New Year, we open and read our notes. Seeing my kids shy smiles when they read what their sibs think is priceless.
Good luck to everyone today in Ontario! Do what you feel is best for your family. No judgement, no bullying...only kindness for all kids and whatever they decide on masks. I've got two kids who are done with masks and two who plan on continuing to wear them.
