Instead of prioritising improvements in fishing practices, MSC’s model allows fisheries to expand certification without meeting best practice, while the MSC itself earns millions from licensing fees.

Right now, out of 273 MSC certified fisheries globally, the research reveals that only 73 meet the highest standards across all 28 performance indicators. The rest? They operate with conditions that often remain open for years.

This misleads consumers who pay a premium for sustainable seafood and harms fisheries that actually meet best practices 🎣

The new analysis finds that 91.8% of fisheries certified under the MSC programme receive certification with conditions at their first assessment. Many of them never fully close these conditions, yet continue to market their products as "sustainable” ❌
