Senior writer for The Athletic, covering Georgia football, the SEC and college football in general. Athens resident since 2010. My wife is much smarter than me.
College athletic departments and NIL collectives are grappling with “donor fatigue”: Fans wondering why they’re the ones being asked to pay for players.
“The consensus is it’s not fair to the fans. It’s not fair to pile on and to give and give and give.”
News: Jalen Carter has entered a deal with Athens-Clarke County solicitors, per his lawyer. Carter has pled no contest and will receive 12 months probation, pay a $1,000 fine, perform 80 hours community service and finish a driving course.
Carter will receive no jail time.
And Jordan Davis finishes his speech by saying: "Go Braves, and Go Dawgs," and lifts his jacket to reveal a Braves shirt underneath.
Not a Georgia native. But wow did he acclimate.
Jordan Davis finished his presser by thanking the media:
“You all made this tremendous and special. ... You all are a direct link to the fans, you all are a direct link to everything, so I just want to say thank you for painting us in a great light.”
Georgia linebacker Monty Rice on why he doesn't buy into recruiting rankings:
"I could look at you at and say that you’re a five-star reporter. But what do I know, I’ve never been a reporter!"
Yeah, I'm gonna frame that quote.
Jalen Carter is subject of arrest warrant in Athens after being implicated by police for racing in the crash that took the life of former teammate, and UGA staffer.
Stetson Bennett has 3,104 passing yards this year ... in the first three quarters of games.
Bennett only has 321 passing yards in the fourth quarter all season, due to being pulled from blowouts or Georgia running the clock out.
What luck for Lincoln Riley, he thought they'd be starting from scratch and just happened to check the transfer portal one afternoon and discovered, Whoa, Caleb Williams is in there! And two other guys he knew from Oklahoma! Whoa, what are the chances?!?!
#USC
's Lincoln Riley on The Herd today: "We didn't take players from Oklahoma. We took players from the transfer portal. Those players and their families had to make a decision to stay at that university ... or to enter the portal where they could be recruited by anybody ..."

yesterday: "Those guys are brilliant. Don't let them trick you. Behind those sunglasses they're brilliant."
NEWS: Demetris Robertson has had his waiver request to play in 2018 granted by the NCAA, according to a source. Georgia just got another weapon for his offense.
Ed Orgeron on planing to recruit in-state next week:
"I'm gonna be in about 18-to-20 homes next week, so that means 18-to-20 gumbos."
Moral of the story: I want to coach at LSU.
Sony Michel and Isaiah Wynn, after the pain in the same building last year, get a Super Bowl ring there a year later. David Andrews gets his third ring.
Michel finishes with a game-high 94 rushing yards and the only touchdown in Super Bowl LIII.
My sense is every Georgia fan knew Stetson Bennett wasn't going to win, and that merely getting to NYC was a win - and amazingly, it had been 30 years since a Georgia player did even that.
Final question of press conference:
Kirby, your defense made Georgia Tech set a school record with 13 punts ...
Smart: “Good for them.”
End of press conference.
Coach K’s first season at Duke was the same school year Georgia won a football national championship. Coach K’s final season was the next school year Georgia won a national championship.
Georgia has 10 players invited to the NFL combine:
-QB Jake Fromm
- RB D'Andre Swift
- RB Brian Herrien
- WR Lawrence Cager
- TE Charlie Woerner
- OT Andrew Thomas
- OL Solomon Kindley
- OT Isaiah Wilson
- S JR Reed
- K Rodrigo Blankenship.
Kirby Smart: "The older I get, the more wiser I get, and the more you realize that chasing the guys that don't believe in the same principles and values of your university and of your program, they're just not worth it."
Kirby Smart on the field goal block return and the team knowing the rule on picking it up:
“The rule is you’re not allowed to pick it up unless you score with it.”
I asked Kirby Smart whether he watched "The Tiger King" during his quarantine:
"I got through two episodes. And I just couldn't do it, man, I couldn't stomach it. And everybody continues to talk about. ... That's not my cup of tea. I'm more of an Ozark guy."
Stetson Bennett will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Georgia baseball season opener on Friday.
It is expected to be a perfect strike, and if not critics will wonder whether JT Daniels/Carson Beck/Caleb Williams/the team trainer would have thrown it better.
D’Andre Walker, a Senior, said that Georgia’s scout team offense ran Georgia Tech’s offense better than Georgia Tech did.
Kirby Smart’s retort to that: “He can say that because he doesn’t have to play them next year.”
Jeremy Pruitt walked across the field to say hello to Mark Christensen, who I wrote about earlier this week. His mother Marybeth: “It’s so cool he did that!”
Greg Sankey to the Georgia crowd: “As the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, I think the four-team Playoff worked out fine this year, didn’t you?”
NEWS: Georgia has dismissed baseball player Adam Sasser, accused of using a racial slur during last Saturday's football game in relation to Justin Fields.
Sasser was a second-team All-SEC selection as a junior this spring, after hitting .317 with 10 homers and 44 RBI.
Kirby Smart when asked about Georgia passing the bal so much today:
“We want people who want to play in this offense. And if you’re sitting at home watching this offense today, I think you’re saying, I wanna play in this offense.”
Kirby Smart praises and lauds Georgia fans for their passion and support, then pauses a moment and adds:
“Even if they didn’t think that Jake could throw the ball.”
I'm only going to talk about the guys that are here, but off the record several Georgia beat writers are questionable for tonight's game after testing positive for New Orleans.
Pending final rankings, Alabama will have beaten teams currently ranked No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, No. 7 and No. 9 ... by an average of 19.2 points (pending rest of Ohio State game) and putting up 50+three times and 40+ another time.
Dan Lanning will stay with Georgia through the Playoffs, and then Glenn Schumann and Will Muschamp will become co-defensive coordinators.
Per Kirby Smart statement.
Georgia kicker Jack Podlesny: "I didn't watch a lick of football until I got to college. I was a soccer kid growing up."
Somewhere,
@3YearLetterman
is shaking with rage.
Baylor coach Matt Rhule said he asked standout WR Denzel Mims if he was playing in the Sugar Bowl.
“He looked at me like I was nuts,” Rhule said. “(He said): ‘We’re playing Georgia. Of course I’m playing.’”
College football could continue holding the national championship at various bland sites that make the highest. Or it could just hold it at the Rose Bowl every year.
I'm amused by this idea that Athens, Ga., has never seen anything like this. Every game since 2010 has been a sellout. Georgia has played No. 1 teams, top 10 teams, etc.
This is a bit ratcheted up because it's Notre Dame. But almost every home game is a huge deal around here.
After talking with my family and Coach Smart, I have decided to come back to the University of Georgia for my last year of eligibility.

All this COVID news today doesn’t have to be a setback. It should be a wake-up call.
Wear masks in public. Socially distance. Wash hands. Be responsible.
We want sports back, we want to have some normalcy. Be responsible, and we’ll get there.
What changed in the last few days? The virus situation didn't. The presidents and powers-that-be can talk all they want about health and safety. But more likely they don't want to disrupt their model by admitting amateurism is a sham and putting their players in bubbles.
Six Georgia football players will receive their degrees tomorrow: Lamont Gaillard, Kendall Baker, Keyon Richardson, Rodrigo Blankenship, J.R. Reed and Steven Van Tifflin.
So will former players DeAngelo Tyson, Nick Williams and Shakenneth Williams.
Richard LeCounte said D'Andre Walker going after Brenton Cox was just a case of someone getting after someone for not doing the right thing. LeCounte was then asked if anyone gets after him like that: "Yeah. He wears a red hat during practice. A little visor."
Georgia has officially been invited to the White House to commemorate its (second straight) national championship.
From a White House official this evening: "The President looks forward to welcoming the Georgia Bulldogs to the White House."
During the 2010s I moved to Athens, met a girl and married her, had two kids, went from The State to the Macon Telegraph to the AJC to The Athletic, wrote a book and bought a house.
I finished the decade by forgetting to send out this tweet because I fell asleep at 9 pm. Boom.
Georgia junior CB Tyson Campbell on playing in the Peach Bowl:
"I'm still a Georgia Bulldog. So my task is to finish out the season. I'm still part of this team. We have a game left. So I want to finish this season with my teammates."
Georgia tight end Tre McKitty said he's been made fun of for his last name all his life. Like when he was younger and chubbier and kids would call him ... wait for it ... "McTitties."
