A friend once told me, "It's impossible for women to lose weight in their 40's."
I was 40 at the time & remember being devastated by this and the idea that I was stuck being in that body.
I turn 45 in two months.
When someone says you can't, prove them wrong. 💪
Age 41: 290lbs, uncontrolled seizures, anxiety, insomnia.
Age 44: Down 160lbs, 0 seizures, no anxiety, no medication, 20+ mile hikes, lifting.
I just turned 45. I started
#keto
in 2017 for my epilepsy.
I had no grasp of how much it would change my life.
This is my "new normal."
People ask about the long term side effects of
#keto
for my refractory epilepsy.
In the past three years, I have experienced:
- Zero
#seizures
- 160 lb weight loss
- ⬆️ stamina for
#hiking
and lifting
- Increased lean body mass
- Optimal blood panels
Pray for me in 2020, fam. 😉
When I was 41, after decades of uncontrolled
#epilepsy
, I started
#keto
in hope it would provide some relief.
Tomorrow I turn 44, & not only have I been
#seizure
free for 3 years, but my life has improved more dramatically than I could have imagined.

Seattle: *covered in an inch of ice thanks to freezing rain*
Seattleites: "Think I'll go for a drive I need my latte."
It's like an automotive Ice Capades out there, but with bad choreography.
I keep hearing tires spinning out & at least one expensive-sounding *CRONCH* so far.
2017: 290lbs, intractable seizures, anxiety.
2021: 135lbs, seizure-free, no medication,
20+ mile hikes, powerlifting.
I was told by my neurologist that
#keto
for epilepsy was unsustainable.
I was told I couldn't build muscle without carbs.
I❤️proving people wrong.
Alrighty. Here's a long-form full-transparency storytime post.
I'm being completely honest here, so unless you're a supremely perfect human being, don't punish me for it with unfounded judgment. It makes me cranky.
I switched to high protein/lower fat/low carb (LCHP) from keto…
On the left, 41 years old, pre-
#keto
and 285 lbs.
Today I turn 43, after 20 months of keto and at my goal weight of 148 lbs, on the right.
This aging thing might not be so bad.

Just so I'm clear:
As a woman I'm expected to 'fight against the patriarchy' while simultaneously accepting that men are better at being a woman than I am.
That about it?
As I begin my 47th revolution around the sun, it’s good to reflect on my journey as it makes me even more thankful for how my life has changed.
In 2017, at 41 years old, I was 290 lb, on multiple epilepsy medications, exhausted and struggling to make it through each day.
A Google search led me to the Charlie Foundation, whose guidance led me to a seizure-free life.
My neurologist w/the medical degree would have happily kept me on high doses of medication and ultimately brain surgery rather than attempt a diet which was developed *for* epilepsy.
Progress: 2016, 2018, 2020
Required: dietary changes + consistency and dedication to training.
Was it quick? No.
Was it worth it?
Absolutely.
I didn't want to be "thin". I wanted to be strong, capable and resilient.
Persistence pays off. Stick to it. 💪
@ChefGruel
I've been following this in the Seattle subreddit. Someone ordered an $18 bowl of clam chowder and with taxes and fees (before gratuity) the total was $41.
"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
2016: I was obese, sedentary, & on a cocktail of epilepsy meds & antidepressants.
So I took that first step.
Then another.
And another.
I am now medication & seizure-free and living a life I could never have imagined.
@CasuallyGreg
Nah. I grew up with my mom doing in-home daycare. That many babies in your house is a nightmarish hellscape.
Best birth control in the world tbh.
A friend insisted on having a dress-up session with me because she wanted me to see how well clothes can fit me now.
I'm glad she did. One of the unexpected side effects of weight loss is body dysmorphia - it's hard for me to not think of myself as I looked before.
This is
#keto
.
At this point I'm convinced the reason Canadians are so polite is because they channel all of their anger into their geese - then absolve themselves of any responsibility of how that anger is utilized.
I haven’t worn tank tops in probably 15 years bc of obesity then because of loose skin insecurity.
Today I decided “fuck it”.
Just had a woman stop me to ask how I got “such great arm definition.” Didn’t even see the loose skin.
The mind is the last to catch up, I swear.
Looking back through old photos I realized how many "before and afters" I've posted over the last 3+ years, and coming to the realization how often my "afters" became a "before."
Every time I felt proud of what I'd accomplished.
Progress is a marathon, not a sprint. 💪
One of my biggest takeaways from the last week is just how crucial your overall health and fitness is in determining how your body handles health crises and surgery.
My situation could have been much, much worse. My surgical team was surprised to learn I was already walking laps…
I just realized that I now weigh less than half my pre-keto weight.
288 - 142 = 145 lbs lost.
I lost the equivalent of my current self, minus lean mass and organ stuffs.
Crazy. 🤔
"
#Keto
is a an extreme and dangerous fad diet."
Top row: 287lbs. High blood pressure. Intractable seizures. Anxiety. Insomnia.
Bottom row (keto): 143lbs. Healthy BP and blood panels. 2 years seizure-free & weight stable. Strong AF.
Tell me again how the top row is better?
I realized this morning that I haven’t taken an official “after” photo since December 2018.
Fancy restroom mirrors provide an opportune moment. :)
April 2017 vs October 2019.

When I began
#keto
for epilepsy at age 41, I didn't want to simply be a smaller version of myself, but a stronger, healthier version of myself.
And never did I think I'd be able to get my arms to do this. Legs have always been easy but arms? Nah.
It's fun to surprise yourself.💪
Wait - so November is National Diabetes Month *and* National Epilepsy Awareness Month?
Why don't we just call it "Shit Fixed By Keto Month" and be done with it.
Just hit 17 months being
#keto
and
#seizurefree
. Sill down 130 lbs, 4 months into powerlifting, feeling better at 42 than I did at 22. Not minding this at all. Pic on the left was age 22. I need a new "after" pic. ;)

I’ve been quiet but for a good reason.
Bowel obstruction caused by scar tissue from past abdominal surgeries has left me in the hospital for several days.
Now I’m on an NG tube drain to help with the pressure while we think about surgery.
Nice view and great company, though :)
While carrying two 25 lb plates back to the deadlift platform yesterday, I noticed how awkward walking with that extra 50 lb was.
Then I realized 4.5 years ago I was walking around with more than 3x that weight attached to my body.
That was some serious perspective.
I call the photo on the far-right "THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM!"
I'm so used to being in my skin as it is now, I tend to forget how I looked and felt in the beginning.
This is just my life now. I'm ok with that.
Treatment for 30 years of intractable

:
#ketogenicdiet
Side effects *may* include:
- 100% cessation of
#seizures
- 145 lb weight loss
- Increased stamina for
#hiking
and
#powerlifting
- Cessation of SSRIs
- New lease on life
Ask your doctor if
#keto
is right for you.
Mom
#keto
update:
She has now been able to discontinue all meds for asthma, GERD, and hypertension.
She has lost a total of 40lbs and is now, after years of limited mobility, able to walk around the grocery store without pain and is even using her stationary bike without pain.🏆
After two months on keto, my mother is down to one nebulizer treatment per day down from two (asthma), and has much less pain in her knees.
This is why people change their dietary habits. Weight loss is a perk, but the relief from chronic conditions is the best catalyst.
@sweatystartup
Deservedly so.
In my experience most people who engage in this behavior are bored 70-something retirees.
Congrats on being ahead of the curve.
I've been keto going on 4 years for my epilepsy, lost 160 pounds and went from obese to 14% body fat and I *still* have people giving unsolicited advice on my food choices.
WHY U DO DIS.
I'mma start muting people who do this I swear to gawd. 🤬
So. Pulled out the suitcase for the first time in three years and unbeknownst to me I had pre-keto clothes in it.
My brain is having a hard time wrapping itself around the fact that this used to fit.
It's September! I am now 2 years medication-free (2.5 years
#seizurefree
.)
No more blood draws, MRIs, med tweaking, side effects including aphasia, memory loss, brain fog, skin rashes, etc.
30 yrs of intractable
#epilepsy
resolved after < 1 month of
#keto
.
Just food. That's it.
I've found the timing of my meals confuses people.
Most days I eat after 3pm, some days, 11am.
"How do you know when to eat?"
"I eat when I'm hungry."
It's pretty impressive how eliminating sugar and carbohydrates puts you more in tune with your body's natural hunger cues.
Excited to announce that as of April I am one year seizure free thanks to
#keto
! I was having 5-6 seizures per month while on 3500mg of levetiracetam and 125lbs heavier this time last year. Thanks to
@CharlieFndation
for their amazing resources.

Just got back from visiting my GP, and learned that she's working towards her certification in obesity medicine. She's keto herself, and will be employing low-carb protocols for patients.
What an exciting time.
Local news: "Do be careful if you need to shovel snow today, as it can cause an elevation in your blood pressure and heart rate."
Exercise.
It's called exercise.
- Eggs to annoy the American Heart Association
- Okra to annoy the carnivores
- Lean ground turkey to annoy the keto people
- Butter to annoy the P:E people
- Annoying vegans is a given.
Did I miss anyone?
2017 -> 2019 -> 2021 -> 2022 (today).
When I started on this journey, all I wanted was to get my seizures under control.
Mission accomplished.
Strength training became my next goal.
Mission...in progress.
Putting in the work and loving every moment of it.
I had another Karen ask me where my mask was (again, exercising outdoors and maintaining 6 foot distance) and I just replied,
“On your husband’s nightstand.” 😂
@KetoHiking
I recommend just "bah-ah-ah-ah"-ing at them. At a minimum, they will be confused and walk away with the potential realization (later on) that you were insinuating their sheep status.
Remember about 18 months ago when it was ok to be keto, everyone was all about that LCHF hashtag, talked about butter and cream & fatty steaks and how much weight they were losing and how great they felt?
(Some even ate vegetables with no judgmental blowback!)
Good times.
Facebook is for people you know well with whom you have little in common.
Twitter is for people you hardly know with whom you have much in common.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
On occasion, the FB memories feature delivers some historical savagery.
I was 29 years old on the left.
46 on the right.
Yes, I look better. But the most important thing is that I *feel* better. I am strong, resilient, healthy, and coming up on 6 years of being seizure-free.
I started stockpiling all of the
#epilepsy
medication I wasn’t taking after I started keto because my neurologist felt
#keto
wasn’t a good therapeutic approach. 6 pills per day that never worked. Keto for 18 months and seizure free for 17. That’s a lot of Keppra.
I've been seizure and medication-free for almost 6 years now thanks to defying my "the ketogenic diet for epilepsy is unsustainable and has a low adherence rate brain surgery would be a better option" neurologist.
I should pay her a visit. Chat, reminisce, that kind of thing.
