This Is Why We Turned Down $270,000 Today we turned down a $270,000 sponsorship offer from a betting company for our podcast. It’s a huge amount of money, especially for an independent sports show and for me, someone who just retired from pro tennis. But here is why we said no.

There is more and more evidence that putting computers and tablets on students' desks (1:1 devices) was a terrible mistake. I agree with @AdamMGrant that "it's time to remove laptops [and tablets] from classrooms."

It's time to remove laptops from classrooms. 24 experiments: Students learn more and get better grades after taking notes by hand than typing. It's not just because they're less distracted—writing enables deeper processing and more images. The pen is mightier than the keyboard.

"One study of..college students...found that they spent nearly 40% of class time scrolling social meda, checking email or watching videos on their laptops." Precisely why I have a phone ban in my classes. They can't concentrate with phones. It's also incredibly rude for

💡How do you develop math problem solving skills? It may seem like inquiry, projects, etc. is the way. But the data & our experience as mathematicians shows the opposite. Strong problem solving is best achieved when we focus on: ✔️ Building knowledge ✔️ Explicit teaching ✔️

“Grades on high-school transcripts too often bear little relationship to a student’s mastery of crucial skills: A student may have graduated with an A in calculus yet lack the capacity to solve simple algebraic equations.” Someone should invent a test that provides some sort of

These results from some students admitted to UCSD are crazy! Grade level & percent of students answering correctly in red. And they even gave them donuts after the test :) These students were suppsed to learn this in school. Seriously, we have a MATH problem. It's appalling.

The most incredible part of this report might be when Harvard acknowledges that its pedagogical crisis is partly due to coddling underprepared students: “For the past decade or so, the College has been exhorting faculty to remember that some students arrive less prepared for

Harvard reports that it is “failing to perform the key functions of grading.” Its grading practices are “damaging the academic culture of the College.” “Faculty newly arrived at Harvard are surprised at how leniently our courses are graded.” Students say academics feel “fake.”

It took me too long to realize that many educational debates aren't really about the effectiveness of various learning techniques. They're about whether education should even begin with the premise of maximizing learning. A shocking number of people would prefer education to

@Beanie0597 I don't want my kids to be told they need 'therapy' because Maths is hard. I want to tell them that there is 'everyday hard stuff', that it just has to be done, that I have an unswerving belief in them to do it, that they have my support if they really need it, but that they need
