Not only was the Marshall Fire the state's worst natural disaster, it was also its most documented.
Body cameras, security cameras, cell phone cameras captured so much if it.
So
@CHansen9NEWS
worked, for months, to try to gather them. Like this one from Bill Fudale

Loveland attorney alleges in federal lawsuit that Loveland Police forcibly arrested 73-year old w/dementia shortly after she left a Walmart .
She had initially left without paying for $14 worth of goods. Returned to store and tried to pay w/credit card.
Arrest happened anyway
Dear people from outside of Colorado.
Yes. We have a Congresswoman. Who said some things tonight.
She wants you to tweet her name.
And get real mad.
This is what she does.
You don’t have to play along.
Sincerely
Lots of Coloradans
As Denver metro area counties bring back mask mandates…
…please try to remember…
…the people working in grocery stores and restaurants and lots of other businesses…
…did NOT pass the order and don’t get paid nearly enough to get yelled at by an adult acting like a child.
Problem solved, right?
Sort of. Having worked on medical billing issues for MANY, MANY years, I've settled on a simple idea that ideally isn't too controversial...
It shouldn't take a patient to contact
@9news
for a provider to budge!
Yet, here we are again
Colorado Springs:
2015. Man with gun kills three around downtown
2015. Man with a gun kills three at Planned Parenthood
2021. Man with gun kills 6 at a birthday party
2022. Man with gun kills at least five at LGBTQ nightclub.

My 1st job paid me < 13K. I worked unfathomable hours in a town of 50K people. I left my hometown, my friends and my family to do so.
Journalists don’t do this for $ or for fame. They do it because they believe words matter.
We are not the enemy.
#journalismMatters
I’m old enough to remember when national tv networks gave a crap about massive news events like the one still unfolding in Colorado right now.
Yeah.
It’s crazy. The inability to drag themselves away from political horse race stories is grotesque.
Seriously tho. Colorado isn’t this pretty.
It’s cold. All the time.
Mountains are small. Skiing is atrocious.
Don’t come here.
It’s a hell scape. Worse than this website.
😎
Journalism literacy 101
Most journalists work in local newsrooms. They are your neighbors. They gripe about some of the same things you do.
They seldom cover national politics. Routinely cover hyper local issues.
They don’t appear on cable news.
And they work very, very hard
Can someone remind me how the son of the greatest coach in Broncos history joined forces with the son of a great Broncos wide receiver…all while under the management of another great Broncos player… to bring championship level football…
…to a city not named Denver?
Ok. Let’s make a deal. If Georgia’s legislative branch enacts Colorado’s voting laws, word for word, the state of Georgia can have its All-Star game back.
Cool?
Cool.

Wanna walk you through this story
@jennifermeckles
and I worked on yesterday.
It involves a really nice guy by the name of Michael.
He's in his 70s. Eligible for the vaccine in Colorado. He actually got an appointment for a shot...
There was just one problem...
To the journalists covering your first mass shooting,
Families of victims owe you nothing
You owe them. Patience. Understanding. Care. A damn good story when they decide to trust you.
Take care of yourselves. Today. Tomorrow. Next month. Next year.
This will test you. Deeply
That CEO told me he would fix this.
And he did. By yesterday evening, he had called Michael to apologize and say there had been an error in the way the billing dept communicated this to Michael.
And guess what... today Michael received his first dose of the vaccine.
In two months my newsroom has mostly emptied. Reporters and anchors and producers and editors and directors and photographers have delivered 8 hours of news a day from basements and living rooms and backyards. I’m damn proud of the work we’ve done.
And we are not the enemy.
Bottom line... If someone gives you some reason why they can't give you a vaccine in the middle of a pandemic, assuming you're eligible, fight it.
no matter what. it should cost you NOTHING
Every person who gets this gets us one person closer to ending it.

I find it quite American that the former Surgeon General of this country wasn’t aware of the fact that ER visits in this country routinely end in four figure bills for insured patients.
(I am glad he’s speaking out about it now however).
Update on my nearly $5000 medical bill for dehydration:
1) Still in limbo with
@MayoClinic
, no clarity or progress negotiating charges.
2) Surprised to hear some ER doctors are upset over my complaint about a $10,000 bill ($5000 post-insurance adjustment) for < 12hrs in ED with 3…
Journalists...
Something you can do right away.
Ask your local law enforcement department/office what its policy is on "prone restraint"
Specifically, what the policy is once person is prone and handcuffed
US DOJ has recommended, since 1995, to do this:
Angry doesn’t cut it. Incensed. Heartbroken. Defeated.
They were doing what you or I do every single day.
Living their lives.
And now they’re dead.
Because someone decided today was the day.
We are a broken country.
I hate the fact that patients far too often feel like we're their last hope for resolution.
This is just a long-winded way of saying, I wish the system worked better than it does.
It’s not the job of the press to uncritically help kickstart Liz Cheney’s run for President…
But man oh man are some national press outlets trying to do precisely that right now.
It’s unbecoming. And IMHO it’s one of the reasons why some people really don’t trust us.
Accepted a new position at the station today.
Director of Special Projects.
I’m really eager to help us turn some memorable and impactful journalism moving forward.
Proud to work at a place that values this.
And yeah. Proud to be a journalist. Yes. Even today.
😁
That appointment was abruptly canceled when a billing person with the medical provider learned he owed $243.85 for a previous and unrelated appointment.
He is a cancer patient. He needs this shot.
Instead, he got this email from a Boulder Medical Center patient account rep
My twin brother -- an ER doc who has already treated many COVID patients -- will get vaccinated this week.
He jumped at the chance to get vaccinated.
Why?
So he can continue to treat more COVID patients.
Simple stuff.
Thanks to all of the health care workers doing this!
In the last 4 years, many in this business have been yelled at, trolled and told their work was fake.
And yet, time after time, they ignored it. Did their jobs. And did some really remarkable work.
It’s an imperfect business, for sure, but I’m damn proud to be a member of it.
Dear Denver newcomers,
Feel free to enjoy all our wonderful state has to offer.
But seriously. That turn signal I’m using to merge into your lane is not a signal for you to speed up.
We do things differently here.
Take care,
Chris
What happened in Denver today will have long-term consequences as to how this city fights a virus that currently remains dangerous and widespread within its limits.
No other way to look at this.
over the years, we have erased hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt for people.
i've had long conversations with medical providers all over the state. talked to more than a hundred patients.
I love the fact that our voice can get providers to do the right thing... BUT
When people tell you not to listen to experts and scientists anymore...
...just remember...
...they already know precisely where the moon's shadow will be...
...in 2045.
Karen Garner weighs 80 pounds
Is five feet tall.
She suffered dislocated shoulder, broken bone and sprained wrist during arrest, according to lawsuit
She repeatedly tried to tell officer, "I'm going home"
She was two blocks away from home
Look. I get it.
I’d imagine everyone who loses a parent instinctually has an urge to call that parent.
But man…it sucks. That split second feeling.
Past few days, I’ve felt it a lot.
Miss ya mom.
For a guy who still refers to our airport as DIA…
…and our stadium as Mile High…
…I’m pretty sure I’m gonna call this webpage Twitter for a few more days.
Michael was miffed. So was his partner. She contacted us to see if this was right.
In essence, she thought, a medical provider was holding a vaccine in the middle of a pandemic as ransom...
Sure did seem that way. So we headed up to Longmont for an interview.
To all y’all thinkin about coming to Denver...
Yes. It routinely goes from 100 degrees to snow in just two days. Happens all the time. At least a few times a year.
I’d totally avoid that place. It’s wacky.

My daughter, who is 11 btw, told me on a hike today that there are a lot of lies on the internet...
...she then proceeded to tell me that in order to find the truth one must seek multiple sources of information.
I shed a tear. And then we trudged on
Heading out to light a boatload of fireworks near the homes of the people who were up super duper late lighting off fireworks near mine.
They won’t mind right that it’s 630am right?
Who’s with me??
One of the more powerful photos I have seen come out of Denver in some time.
(And please, everyone, make sure to give credit to the photojournalist when you use this.

Alyson McClaran)
We got a nice email from Michael and his partner this morning... it read, in part:
We couldn't have done this without you all. I am still wondering if all the other people who were "red flagged"... You have our deepest gratitude. Sincerely, Elizabeth and Michael
As Colorado becomes just the second state in the country to ban use of the term “excited delirium” on police and autopsy reports… following our yearlong investigation…
I want to take a moment to explain the motivation behind our work.

As Jennifer Meckles interviewed the couple, I contacted both
@GovofCO
as Boulder Medical Center for comment.
Also contacted
@COHealthAccess
for comment... it agreed... this was wrong.
Eventually the CEO of Boulder Medical Center contacted me.
They would be in their 30s.
Many with families. Kids.
Headed to work. Looking forward to the weekend.
Planning summer vacations.
What we have lost, we will never know.

Wrote an obit today for my father.
One of the most difficult things I’ve ever done.

Let’s love each other a little more. Respect one another much more. And never miss an opportunity to tell a loved one “I love you”.
Thank you.
In the last few days, as so many of you have reached out to offer a few kind words regarding my
#COVID19Colorado
updates, I have been reminded that not everyone comes to Twitter to bicker and demean.
Can't tell you just how much that has meant to me.
Also...
Look into past in-custody deaths
Most big-to-medium-sized cities will have at least ONE case that needs to be reviewed.
We can help each other. I've now put together a list of 115 deaths that followed prone restraint
(this story is dated)
Totally expecting twitter folks to handle the very real possibility of renewed mask mandates with the kind of steady calm and nuanced appreciation of science that has marked this website from its inception.
Today would have been Jessica Ridgeway's 21st birthday.
I still think of her often.
I still think of her mom and her aunt and her grandma often.
The loss
Their loss
Take a moment today to think of her family.
And a life stolen.
But far from forgotten.
What if...
And I know this is a crazy idea...
But what if some minor inconveniences in your life...
...actually keep businesses and schools and restaurants open?
I know. I know. Crazy right?

Despite what some might have predicted...
The virus did not, in fact, disappear the day after the election.
Here in Colorado, we’re about to hit peak hospitalizations.
#COVID19
Gonna make this plea more frequent
Please, please, please
@CDPHE
&
@GovofCO
... can we start adding vaccinated vs unvaccinated in statewide hospitalization counts???
Other states are doing this daily. It's beyond a shame that we're not doing that here

I’m stuck on something
All kids who grew up 1.) in the 80s and 2.) with a Nintendo…
…believed…I mean absofriggenlutely believed…
…that blowing on a Nintendo cartridge would make it work
This was pre-internet. Pre email. Yet we all got the word. I still don’t know how.
It’s time for journalists to redouble our efforts to question and scrutinize and never take for granted the role we play as a check to those in power.
The world needs great journalism now more than ever.
Look. I know. We agree on nothing.
Nothing.
Except this.
The
@FlyFrontier
employees who duct taped that dude to the chair…
…they deserve raises…and medals…and the thanks of a collective nation.
America. We finally can agree on something.

80% of COVID-19 patients
88% of COVID ICU patients
90% of COVID patients on ventilators
Feel free to share with people who are demanding facts.
In other news...
Mom just got her first vaccine dose.
Still find it remarkable that less than a year into this in Colorado...
...we have a viable vaccine.
Thank you scientists. And thank you health care workers for what you’ve done. 🙏
#covid19Colorado
JUST IN - State of Colorado says since Monday more than 1900 vaccine doses distributed.
A list that now includes my twin brother...an ER doc and dad to three (including a semi-proud Sarah).
He’s got the scar to prove it.
Thank you to all frontline healthcare workers!
I typically hate calling out other journalists publicly, but in this case I’ll make an exception.
This headline is terrible. Fix it. Apologize for it. And do better.
We all look bad when one of us pulls this sh**...
Thousands of journalists will never appear on evening cable news shows
We cover city council meetings. School boards. Zoning laws. State legislatures.
We dig into medical billing problems. Corrupt local politicians. Unfair business practices.
And we are not the enemy
The virus is real.
The vaccine works well.
Your odds are better with the vaccine than without it.
People who say otherwise are lying to you.
Their lies have hurt people.
Front line health care workers are tired.
I’m tired.
Mostly tired of the virus. And the lies.
This was no spontaneous uprising.
It was thought out. Discussed.
Planned.
And yet, today, there appeared to be less police presence guarding the US Capitol than there was guarding the Colorado State Capitol back during the George Floyd protests.
Today was not a good day
I’m mad. Mad for kids who need the time in school to catch up
Mad for small business owners who just want to survive
Mad at people who spend more time ridiculing strangers than fighting for solutions
We should be coming together. We’re not
I’m mad.
Hey
@DenverPolice
Feels like you either have officers saying things that you should be willing to say on the record.
Or this is made up.
Now that this is on its way to 1million views, it’s probably time for you to weigh in on this.
On the record.
WOW 🚨 Americans Have No Idea How Bad Things Really Are

Less than four months ago, I lost my mom. This week, my wife lost hers
I love what they meant to us. Love what they taught us
But, wow, this hurts.
For me, the tough part comes during the drive home. When I would call my mom.
The moment my mind tells me to do what I’ve always done.
Inevitably, a split second later, my mind remembers. She’s gone.
I hate these moments. Fiercely.
Honestly... there are some moments in life that are just really, really remarkable.
This is one of them.
This morning,

I'm still in shock.

I'd like to take a moment to talk about the death of Cannon Hinnant
He's the 5 yr old from Wilson, NC, murdered by neighbor 8/9
You might have seen his name trending here on Twitter.

Maybe you wondered why it hasn't gotten more coverage. I wondered too
Oh... and one more thing.
Don't wait to tell someone you love that you love them.
Time moves. Fast. Too fast.
And we can never let it move so fast that we forget about those who would jump over mountains to tell the world how much they love us.
"We love you mom"

I’d challenge anyone to find a more successful effort to raise money in Colorado than what Kyle has been doing for years.
No overhead. Just an idea. Executed week after week after week.
He’s redefined philanthropy in this state.
You beautiful people. You covered the entire cost of the memorial to Kendrick Castillo and raised another $20k and counting to start a scholarship in his name. Thank you.
I’ve thought a lot about why so many of us are so bothered by what the Mayor did today.
At one point, it hit me.
We’ve all wanted to do what the Mayor did today.
We’ve all wanted to see someone.
Hug someone. Take care of someone.
In person
And, yet, we elected not to.
