6 years ago, a health condition disabled me. 2 years ago, my mom had a hemorrhagic stroke. My spouse has a connective tissue disorder (EDS) that disables her. It took these things for me to start questioning how disability is viewed in buildings, architecture, and design.

#energytwitter Real Time Pricing utility programs are broken and only benefit the privileged. ComEd is now paying us $8.50/month to be enrolled in their program, thanks to our rooftop solar system. Other customers will owe upwards of $30/month for their capacity charge.

I know this is typically synonymous with a “scam”, but I think we really just have a filter change aversion?

It’s currently 95F out, so our white brick wall which is getting blasted by sun is no hotter than the ambient outdoor temperature.

We painted our building side brick white and it is 22F cooler than the red face brick that faces the same direction and gets the same amount of sun. That’s a 20% reduction! And it’s 31F cooler than our neighbor’s common brick. That’s a 25% reduction!!

This is not a structural material issue, it’s an envelope issue!!!!! Wood structure getting unnecessary hate because of stuff like this, when it is really one of the best environmental choices.

How much of Americans’ aversion to apartment housing is due to sound transmission problems exacerbated by timber frame construction?

Did about half my sour dough bulk fermenting outside today because it was around 78F (more like 82F), and it had a much bigger volume before shaping. I’m sorta scared for the results tomorrow.

Outside of HVAC, we: -switch to high smoke point cooking oils -flush the home by opening all windows and turning on all exhaust fans when outdoor air quality, temp, and humidity is right -robot vacuum daily -monitor IAQ because you can’t manage what you don’t measure

BREAKING (ACLU): A federal judge reversed NIH's terminations of hundreds of critical research grants that were canceled because of their alleged connection to disfavored topics, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and gender identity. This is a major win for public health.
