[9/10: Prospects].It seems that the biosynthesis of phytohormone compounds likely predated their recruitment in signaling and metabolism in land plants. If some of these compounds have any (signaling) role in algae, or how they came to become plant hormones remains to be found.

[8/10:].We provide a small insight on how the profiles differ in three axenic vs. contaminated strains.

[7/10:].We additionally analyzed selected (particularly streptophyte) algae in their stationary phase of culture growth.

[6/10:].Several phytohormones are excreted into the culture medium, such as auxin by charophytes and cytokinins and salicylic acid by Viridiplantae in general. We found that phenolics including salicylic acid are also present in agar.

[5/10:].By contrast, land plants but not green algae contain the trans-zeatin type cytokinins as well as auxin and cytokinin conjugates. Also, ABA is detected consistently in land plants. Color scale shows the relation between concentrations in biomass and blank.

[4/10: What we found?].Our findings include the ubiquity auxin, salicylic acid, ethylene and tRNA-derived cytokinins including cis-zeatin in Viridiplantae. Charophytes occasionally produce jasmonates and abscisic acid.

[3/10: How?].Focusing on sterptophyte algae, we used LC/MS and laser spectroscopy for a detailed phytohormone analysis, with comprehensive sampling strategy including not only biomass, but also culture media and control (blank) media, accounting for excretion and background.

[2/10: Why?].Until now, no systematic analysis of phytohormone occurence was performed throughout steptophyte algal lineages.
