Chickenpox is common. Usually it is just unpleasant, but it can be severe or life threatening. A long established vaccine to prevent it will be offered to all children rather than only those who can pay. Immunity by vaccination is safer than by infection.
We're launching a chickenpox vaccination programme which will protect around half a million children each year. From January 2026, eligible children will get an MMRV vaccine to protect against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox. Eligibility will be announced in due course.

It’s publication day for the new edition of my poetry collection, ‘You Took the Last Bus Home’. It’s been unavailable for nine months, following the demise of its original publisher, Unbound. I’m delighted that Picador stepped into the breach to bring out this shiny new edition.

Humanists believe the universe operates according to natural laws, and that we can use science, evidence, and critical thinking to better understand it. #thatshumanism

What a great discovery from a relatively simple experiment. Nice touch on the mug!
On Fridays, laureates Konstantin Novoselov and Andre Geim used to explore things they had no time for as part of their research projects. One Friday they started experimenting with graphite and tape and a new material was born - graphene.

There is a light that never goes out...
This edition of #PeriodicGraphics highlights how ultraviolet light (UV) from the sun triggers chemical reactions, such as those that break down plastics and aid the production of vitamin D. https://t.co/bkSceDtjnq

An inspiring pioneer and one of my scientific heroines
#OnThisDay 20 August 1955, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin and her colleagues published the final structure of vitamin B12 which has the most complex structure of all vitamins.

This might be one of the most famous images in photographic history. The first ever X-ray image was taken in 1895 by Wilhelm Röntgen, awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. Read the story 'A Helping Hand from the Media' at: https://t.co/eLUN7YgpP2
