This time, just a year ago, I sat on a Medical Research Council panel in London deciding we should fund Prof Sarah Gilbert's vaccine against the novel coronavirus. Quite a thrill today to be receiving that vaccine.

After 35 yrs in the NHS, I’m on the receiving end for 1st time! And wow, it’s been brilliant. Broadgreen Hosp. Day Case Unit must be NHS at its best! Ok a hernia repair is not the most exciting op for Mr Ashraf, but he, nurse Sini & whole team fantastic, so caring & professional
Want some fantastic

This is a terrible reminder, if one were needed, that behind the dreadful growth in numbers are countless personal tragedies. Donal was a fantastic guy to work with, who was right at the heart of the College and it’s response to the pandemic. This is so incredibly sad.
We're devastated to announce that our registrar, colleague & friend Professor Donal O'Donoghue died last night from

Our thoughts are with his family & loved ones. He will be missed terribly.

We’ve known about this virus since Dec 31st 2019. We’ve known it was a serious threat since mid-January. We should not, at the end of March, be “hoping for a virus test”.

On Aug 1990 I did my 1st on call. I remember hiding in a loo at 8am revising Cardiac Arrest. If I could handle that, I could handle anything! I’ve done ~ 1686 since then, today is my last. Think I’ve done my bit. Plus there’s a new Dr Solomon, just started in Manc. Her turn now!
'Twas the night before Christmas & all through the house not a creature was stirring except for that attack dog Paxman, whose bite was definitely worse than his bark🐶 Delighted to be on Christmas

When I was a medical student in the 80s, the Oxford textbook of Medicine was THE Bible, and its editors Profs Weatherall Ledingham and Warrell were like Gods to us. I still get a little thrill from my own small contribution (with Prof D Warrell) to the latest four volume edition!

For every 100 diagnosed with
#COVID19
, there are approximately:
80 who have mild disease,
15 who have severe disease and need to be in hospital,
5 who are critically ill and need to be on intensive care, one of whom will die.
Inevitably, there will be children who develop measles encephalitis and are at risk of death or brain damage.
This disease is completely preventable by vaccination and we must do everything we can to get people vaccinated.

A great achievement. You do have to wonder though, if that same resource, equipment, and reagents has just been put into strengthening local labs around the country, with local lab workers whether these 1864 samples, and thousands of others, would’ve been done weeks ago!
