This figure displays population-level probabilities of pain based on prior substance use. Co-use of cannabis/tobacco was most likely to lead to pain, followed by exclusive tobacco and exclusive cannabis use. Results were similar when looking at effects of pain on substance use.

As demonstrated in our conceptual model, these findings represent a vicious cycle where pain can lead people towards substance use and substance use subsequently worsens that pain, leading to further substance use.

So exciting to see my mentor and friend opening his own lab! Alex has been incredibly successful to date and is a strong physician-scientist in physiatry. Great example to others like myself on this path that will hopefully become increasingly more common.
