And big shout outs to everyone who has given us critiques, advice/suggestions for improvement (including the very generous anonymous reviewers at JLC) , and generally been cheerleaders as we've put this idea forward.

We are very excited for what this means & what comes next (state courts!). Honestly I think we have about a dozen or so ideas percolating on how far we can take this, so now its just about putting pen to page and churning out the data so others can capitalize on what we've found.

We validate using the US Supreme Court, where a consistent measure has existed for decades, and show that opinion language has a clear ideological component that is measurable. As you can see, the measures match up fairly well. First time I've gotten an R^2 in the 90s!

Jake and I lay the groundwork for a MUCH bigger project developing clear, & reliable ideological scores for judges based on the language they choose in opinions.

Votes are an outcome of ideology, & while that means theres an ideo component, its not the whole story. But the words used to explain tell us a lot more about a person's ideological "location" than a simplistic yay/nay vote. Enter "Measuring Judicial Ideology Through Text".
