When a nominee obfuscates about their belief on a controversial issue (e.g., abortion), the effect of a respondent's issue position on their support for the nominee is severed. When a nominee is forthcoming (as state candidates often are), issue positions strongly predict support.

We examine how judicial nominees' statements to the public affect people's support for their confirmation. Probably our most surprising finding is that the public takes nominees at their word.

Voting today looks to be challenging. Each candidate is assigned a number and voters need to write the candidates’ numbers on the ballot by hand. The NYT has a great story on this today:
