We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ken Mattingly, Apollo 16 Command Module Pilot. We are proud to display the capsule in which he made 64 lunar orbits during his mission. A Navy Rear Admiral, Mattingly was a graduate of Auburn University. God speed and War Eagle.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is saddened to learn of the passing of Gemini 7 and Apollo 8 Commander Frank Borman. Borman with his crew, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders, orbited the moon 10 times on Christmas Eve 1968, broadcasting images of the lunar surface back to Earth.

Tonight, we will light the Saturn V in honor of Huntsville Police Officer Garrett Crumby, who lost his life on duty, and for Officer Albert Morin, who was critically injured. We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and are grateful for all HPD does for us and our community.

We have begun preserving the Saturn I! This week, the team began with pressure washing and sealing the 190-foot tall artifact, which has been at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center since June of 1969.

When an explosion occurred on the Apollo 13 mission, astronauts John Young and Charlie Duke used the Lunar Module simulator now on display at the Rocket Center to find a solution to get the Apollo 13 team home. Young and Duke later went to the moon on the Apollo 16 mission.

Last week, we talked about the anniversary of the launch of the Gemini 7. Today is the anniversary of the launch of Gemini 6A with astronauts Wally Schirra and Thomas Stafford aboard. The two piloted their spacecraft to within a foot of Gemini 7 for the first rendezvous in space.

The Pathfinder Restoration Project moved forward today, lifting the Pathfinder shuttle orbiter off the external tank. After weeks of preparation, 2 cranes lifted the 127K lbs. shuttle test article to the ground. We will work with @NASA_Marshall to evaluate the interior structure.

The Alabama Space Science Exhibit Commission is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Kimberly Robinson as Executive Director and CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. A 31-year veteran of NASA, Dr. Robinson will assume her role on Feb. 15, 2021.
