What's really exciting is that we can then use the cloud and aerosol properties to predict energy flows and radiative heating rates, which really gets to the heart of understanding the role of clouds and aerosols in the climate system. More to come - this is just the start! (3/3)

I have worked on the "CAPTIVATE" algorithm that achieves this over the last ten years, along with my amazing colleagues @mason_shannon, Alessio Bozzo and Nicola Pounder - check out the paper we published last year (2/3).

Abstract. ACM-CAP provides a synergistic best-estimate retrieval of all clouds, aerosols, and precipitation detected by the atmospheric lidar (ATLID), cloud-profiling radar (CPR), and multi-spectral...

Very pleased to see the first synergy retrievals from #EarthCARE revealed by @ESA today, showing how the combination of radar, lidar and radiometer can be used to estimate the properties of clouds and aerosol particles in the atmosphere! (1/3)

With the initial images from each of the instruments aboard ESA’s EarthCARE satellite now in hand, it's time to reveal how these four advanced sensors work in synergy to measure exactly how clouds...

All four of #EarthCARE's instruments are now operating! The Atmospheric Lidar (ATLID) is currently being commissioned and we hope to see the first images from it in August - stay tuned! (3/3)

The 500-m resolution of the MSI reveals cloud structures in great detail, here showing orographic waves around the Kuril islands. The MSI provides essential contextual information for the radar, lidar and broadband radiometer. (2/3)

First images from the third of #EarthCARE's four instruments! The 1.65, 0.87 and 0.67 micron reflectances from the multi-spectral imager (MSI) are shown as red, green and blue in the image on the left, enabling ice and liquid cloud to be distinguished. (1/3)
More #EarthCARE data! The mission multispectral imager has also delivered the first images, showcasing various types of clouds and cloud temperatures worldwide. This image shows a thunderstorm north of Naples in Italy on 17 July. 👈The true-colour part of the image on the

We didn't know before launch that the #EarthCARE BBR pixel-level data would be so good, but the quality of these images suggests possibilities for studying the 3D radiative effect of clouds and evaluating high resolution models. (3/3)

What's great about #EarthCARE's BBR is (1) the amazing 650-m resolution in nadir view (compare to 10-20 km for CERES) and (2) the extra perspective from the three views. Look at the different directions of the shadows (in blue) cast by clouds at top & bottom of this image! (2/3)

First light from #EarthCARE's Broadband Radiometer (BBR) and it's a beauty! The BBR measures reflected sunlight and emitted thermal infrared radiation in a 17-km swath centred on the radar/lidar, telling us the impact of clouds and aerosols on radiative energy flows. (1/3)
New week, new data from @esa_Earthcare instrument! You are looking at the very first data from the Broadband radiometer: https://t.co/8Gn6YNxIdJ The broadband radiometer provides accurate measurements of the reflected solar and emitted thermal radiation. #EarthCARE

To be honest I’m almost as happy to see the end of this dismal election campaign as I am of seeing the end of this dreadful government. Little mention of climate change, the damage done by Brexit, or whether UK should sell arms to countries that drop bombs on children. (3/3)

Good luck to all the progressive parties in the UK tomorrow. I’ll be voting Labour but the main priority is to give the Conservatives a huge kicking for all the damage they have done, summarised here... (1/3) https://t.co/t0RfwJfaUN

Announcing the second #EarthCARE launch - this time of the X account! Follow @esa_earthcare for detailed updates from the mission.
Think you know #clouds? Think again! #EarthCARE will demystify these big and misty, often thin and wispy, and occasionally thunderous behemoths. We’ll also shine a light on aerosols like pollution and dust, and how they and clouds regulate Earth's #climate. Follow us for more!

Congratulations @ESA and @JAXA_en on the release of the first amazing images from #EarthCARE! We are totally blown away by the quality of the radar data and are very excited to see the measurement of fall speeds from space for the very first time. 🧵1/2
The first results from #EarthCARE cloud profiling radar are here! Here's how they look like and why you should be as excited as we are: https://t.co/A8sYCdB84D The radar was provided by @JAXA_en and it's one of the four instruments aboard the satellite.
