It was a pleasure to work with @MikeBernersLee and his team at Small World Consulting over the last few weeks to improve @Tred_Earth's carbon tracking technology. Our app now does a better job than ever at tracking your carbon footprint as you spend!.

A few years ago, Mike Berners-Lee's book 'How bad are Bananas’ brought carbon footprinting to the mainstream, making what was previously a dry academic topic accessible to everyone. At Tred we share...

Cost of heat from heat pump: 6.6p/kWh.Equivalent cost using a gas boiler: 6.8p/kWh.Saving: 2.4%. ** Conclusion: Heat pumps DO work in the snow **.

These defrost cycles do lower the overall efficiency slightly but over the last 6 hours it's still averaged an impressive 286%! Running on off-peak electricity on Octopus Energy Agile this period has still cost less than if we had been heating the house with a gas boiler:.

⚠️ Doesn't it get clogged up with snow and ice? ⚠️. It would if it were not for the clever way it defrosts itself. About once an hour it blasts some heat through the outside unit to clear any ice and show that's built up - see the spikes of negative heat energy on the chart.

My heat pump doesn't like running in the snow. It LOVES it! ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ . It's been happily humming away all morning heating the home and keeping us all nice and cosy.

Cooking with an induction hob results in about half the CO2 emissions. So, if you’re still in love with cooking with gas, take a moment to consider the planet and you will realise… induction hobs are better in pretty much every way!.

Induction Hob. Induction hobs are much more efficient, delivering 84% of the energy to the thing your cooking. To bring our pot of pasta to the boil requires just **0.12 kWh** of electricity. Carbon emissions: **26 grams**.

Gas Hob. When cooking with gas, only 40% of the energy goes in to the thing your cooking - the rest is lost to the surroundings as waste heat. So to bring our pot of pasta to the boil requires **0.26 kWh** of gas. Carbon emissions: **53 grams**.

As an example, let’s consider the carbon emissions of bringing a pot of pasta to the boil (about 1 litre of water). To heat 1 litre of water to boiling point requires about 0.1 kWh of energy. Let's do the comparison. .

So is it better to burn gas directly to cook your food or to use electricity and let the burning of gas happen in a distant power station instead?.

The answer depends on where you get your electricity from. Mine comes from the grid and a proportion of this is generated by burning fossil fuels - gas in fact!.

Is cooking with gas the best way to cook?. In a recent post I suggested induction hobs were better in almost every way. Turns out a lot of people disagree!. Cooking preferences aside, which is better from a carbon perspective?

@OctopusEnergy Scrapping a perfectly functional boiler did feel a little wasteful but I knew that the carbon benefits would far outweigh the any embodied carbon; Swapping a gas boiler for a heat pump will slash the carbon footprint by of a homes heating system by 67%!!!.

@OctopusEnergy The first change was easy - induction hobs are better in pretty much every way!. Changing the way we heat our home was a little more daunting… It meant ripping out our gas boiler and replacing it with a heat pump. .

@OctopusEnergy To get to this point we had to make changes to:. 1. The way we cook 🍳.2. The way we heat our home 🔥.

Earlier this year we said goodbye to gas at our home in York 👋. The meter was removed by @OctopusEnergy and we're now officially off the gas grid!. This will save us ~£100 a year in standing charges, but more importantly, we’re no longer burning any fossil fuel in our home 🙂

Major progress on MVHR ducting. This is the wall and ceiling of our new ensuite. Thanks to the room's central location we've been able to locate much the supply/extract ducting to/from other rooms in here. Very satisfying to look at - shame it's all going to be hidden!
