Liberal catholic Anglican priest. Dean of Self-supporting Clergy in DioTruro. Focal Priest for St Hilary Church in Mount's Bay United Benefice, West Cornwall.
Sadly our
#roundtheworldcruise
has had to come to an abrupt end following the sudden death of Gary’s mother (who was travelling with us) on board ship. Returning to the UK from Durban in shock & deep sadness. Joy Shedden Anderson 1936-2024. May she rest in peace and rise in glory
After crazy golf and helter skelters in cathedrals, I'm now fantasising about a model railway installation running the length of our church nave for August. Visitors will be able to contemplate whether their spiritual lives are "on track," despite delays and cancellations.....
Difficult couple of days ahead: first Sunday at St Hilary Church tomorrow after my sabbatical; Gary's mother's funeral in Surrey on Monday. It was an amazing
#roundtheworldcruise
but difficult not to focus on how it ended so abruptly with the loss of Joy. Prayers much appreciated
So that's it - taken my final service at St Hilary Church for the next four months & my sabbatical now begins! Gary & I are nearly ready for our amazing round-the-world cruise with
@FredOlsenCruise
where I will be the Cruise Chaplain thanks to
@FlyingAngelNews
. What a privilege!
And so we reach Santiago de Compostela, the end of our wonderful
#camino
pilgrimage. The noon Pilgrim Mass was emotional for so many reasons, not least because we were seated in the best seats to see the Botafumeiro swing, sending our prayers aloft in clouds of incense.
@RevJMW
Incredibly humbled that a young person I taught in the early 1980s went on to be a successful author and has kindly and generously dedicated his third novel to me, published today. So, if you're a teacher feeling a bit disillusioned at the moment:

Others have said it more eloquently, but wow! Gaia in Truro Cathedral is a towering reflection on the insignificance of humankind in the world, making the significance we believe we have to the Creator God even more amazing.
@RevSimonR
@TruroCathedral
I’m sure that Palm Sunday on board a cruise ship is a challenge at the best of times, but today in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Madagascar, in a Force 8 gale and a 5 metre swell, the congregation had to remain seated while I risked life and limb!
#roundtheworldcruise
Think I survived! Julie
@Skentelbery
you were great - easy to talk to and very encouraging! Thank you
@BBCCornwall
for giving me the chance to share something of my life with listeners. It was an honour to be invited.
Gary and me scrubbing up well for a Formal Night as we cruise towards the historic town of Charleston in South Carolina for an overnight port stay.

Thank you to
@PetrocTrelawny
for featuring St Hilary Church on R3 this morning at 7:32 on our saint’s day. The bells he mentioned used in the BBC broadcasts in the 1920s and 30s no longer ring as we need £70,000 to restore them. Please get in touch if you can help.
@MountsBayUB
A peaceful, blessed and happy Christmas from all at St Hilary Church, both to those who know us and love us already *and* to those who have yet to find us tucked away in beautiful West Cornwall. Nadelik Lowen!
The majestic Milford Sound in South Island, NZ, enhanced by a glorious rainbow framing the Lady Bowen Falls. Totally Tolkeinesque! Another highlight of our

Giving thanks today for 30 years of women’s priestly ministry in the Church of England, especially thinking of the many who have influenced and shaped me - in particular, my dear friend
@RevJMW
with whom I trained at Cuddesdon and who is the best Bishop we haven’t had (yet!)
Know anyone in the Marazion area who'd appreciate a log fire, free soup & sandwiches, & some company tomorrow anytime 11.00am - 3.00pm? They'd be very welcome at our Warm Space - The Flying Duck Bistro, St Hilary, in collaboration with St Hilary Church.
@WarmWelcome_UK
@DioTruro
Wonderful to have Bishop Graham James at our St Hilary Feast. An uplifting Eucharist followed by a shared lunch - the table was groaning with food! +Graham's sermon highlighted that Hilary comes from the Latin "hilarius" meaning "cheerful!" Felt entirely appropriate today!
After six days at sea with a tempestuous Atlantic crossing, we arrived in rain in Bermuda today. Pink sand and coral reefs will have to remain in our imaginations! Privileged to say Mass for the crew and now an interdenominational service for the passengers.
#roundtheworldcruise
A joy to baptise young Freddie at St Hilary Church today as part of the morning Eucharist. 40 of his family and friends came too, so it was a big congregation. We even had COVID-secure refreshments afterwards! Freddie, we welcome you!
@DioTruro
@MountsBayUB
Lent on board ship. Such a privilege to minister to those from a wide variety of Christian denominations. Looking forward to Palm Sunday - sadly no donkey!
#roundtheworldcruise
Tomorrow is St Piran's Day. Expelled from Ireland for his powerful preaching, legend has it that he was thrown into the sea attached to a millstone and washed up on the shores of N. Cornwall. You can come more conventionally to St Hilary Church tomorrow at 9.30am to remember him!
Our journey ended at Finisterre, the Spanish equivalent of Land’s End (without the theme park!), known to most of us from the Shipping Forecast! It’s the end of the Camino, but many pilgrims never reach it. We gave heartfelt thanks for so many blessings on our pilgrimage.
@RevJMW
Excited shortly to be on my way to Truro to be "The Big Guest" on
@Skentelbery
's programme on
@BBCCornwall
at 12.10pm! For those of you who pray, some prayers that I don't make a complete fool of myself would be very welcome.......
Very special private tour of the gardens at St Michael’s Mount today for clergy spouses (and their clergy partners!). Amazing experience, visiting areas prohibited to the general public.
@DioTruro
After a challenging Deanery Synod last evening, such a joy to baptise Gillian today in St Hilary Church in a well attended Midweek Eucharist. "Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father."

@DioTruro
This week I’m co-leading a pilgrimage for
@pilgrim_mc
with
@RevJMW
along the Camino: Roncevalle to Santiago de Compostela. Part walking, part travelling by coach to include all. Passed the astonishing
@MuseoGuggenheim
in Bilboa en route from the airport.
What do you call someone who is disappointed their ‘A’ level grades today? A wonderful human being of the same value and worth they were yesterday...... Praying for all those struggling to believe this.
A privilege to be at the G7 fringe Prayer Breakfast taking place at St Hilary Church co-hosted by
@pmounstephen
and
@BishopAngaelos
looking at religious persecution across the world. Horrific stories emerging from a distinguished panel. Lord have mercy.
We haven’t been to Singapore for about 20 yrs & had forgotten what a wonderful, vibrant & clean city it is! Today we went to the UNESCO World Heritage Orchid Gardens & were blown away by the beauty & size of these glorious specimens! Another highlight of this

Privileged to celebrate the Eucharist today in the small parish church of Mösern as we draw closer to our time in
#Oberammergau
watching the Passion Play tomorrow.
"Alleluia! Christ is Risen!" All welcome to St Hilary Church at 11.00am for our Easter Day Eucharist. Come and pray for peace, justice and equity in our troubled world, and give thanks for the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, which makes the dream of these things a reality.
A morning spent on Komodo Island, Indonesia, with some Komodo dragons, followed by an interdenominational service for Mothering Sunday on board ship! Make your own joke if you’re still living in 1975! Another joy of this
#roundtheworldcruise
On this Feast of St Michael and All Angels, I'm supporting
@Revdsian252
at the start of her parishes' 24-hour prayer vigil for the new Night Church in Penzance. Processing the Blessed Sacrament from the Chapel in St Michael's Mount across the causeway and beyond. Service 11.15am.
Our final full day in Austria and Germany as our pilgrimage to
#Oberammergau
draws to a close. The day promises a visit to Innsbruck and to the stunning Stams Abbey. It also promises rain and thunderstorms….. But what a trip! With so many thanks to
@RevJMW
and McCabe Travel.
Tomorrow is Laetare Sunday, a day of refreshment in Lent, and traditionally kept as Mothering Sunday. Join us at St Hilary Church for a Sung Eucharist at 9.30am when we will be remembering *all* those who have nurtured us, whether or not they are our biological mothers.
@DioTruro
Miraflores Locks - the third and final locks of the extraordinary Panama Canal. From here, we cross into the Pacific Ocean and - after Costa Rica - begin our journey to Hawaii. What an amazing privilege this journey is!

After nearly three months on a cruise ship, I realise that I have more in common with the Big Buddha of Phuket (Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Eknakiri) than I might have hoped!

“Book ‘em, Danno!” Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, watched over by the extraordinary Diamond Head. A beautiful day on shore after five crossing the Pacific Ocean. Expecting a more sombre day tomorrow as we visit Pearl Harbor to pay our respects.

Having visited Mallorca for over 20 years, how can we have overlooked the smaller, quieter, greener Menorca until now? A room with a view and a glorious sunset - I’m sure we’ll be back!

Delighted to be baptising three children as part of today’s Sung Eucharist at St Hilary Church. You are welcome to join us at 9.30am if you are in the area - and if you remembered to put the clocks back an hour!

Wonderful service for the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St Hilary Church. Stonkingly good sermon from
@pmounstephen
and a great sense of the presence of the Holy Spirit. David Ball, our organist for 55+ years, was presented with his Cross of St Piran Award. Well deserved!
Three children baptised today at St Hilary Church, and Jack and William reaffirmed their baptismal faith in front of a congregation of 104! What a wonderful occasion!

Today the Cornish Celtic Way Pilgrimage concluded at St Michael’s Mount after a walk from Trencrom Hill to Ludgvan and then to Marazion. Giving thanks to God for a largely dry week, for companionship, for spiritual journeying and for safe arrival.
#Pilgrimage_mc
This weekend I'm leading a McCabe Pilgrimages group finding out more about the Cornish Celtic Saints. Here we are at the Holy Cave, Holywell on our St Piran' trail. Today we share the Eucharist at St Hilary Church followed by a tour of St Michael's Mount.

@MountsBayUB
“Alleluia! Christ is Risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!” Wonderful to have a full St Hilary Church on this Easter Day! And wonderful to have beautiful floral arrangements!
@DioTruro
Lovely to hear David Ball, our organist at St Hilary for over 50 years, on
@BBCCornwall
this morning speaking about his award of the Cross of St Piran by the Bishop of Truro for services to church, the community and education. Congratulations, David!
Our arrival in Santiago de Compostela draws closer. Walked to Cruz de Hierro - highest point on the French route of the Camino - for a Eucharist at an improvised altar! On to O Cebreiro - see the effect of the lighting on the altar of the beautiful church in the photo

Humbled to preside at the Eucharist at St Hilary Church on World AIDS Day where we remembered those living with and those we have lost from HIV/AIDS over the last 40 years.Prayed too for an end to the discrimination still suffered by those living with the condition.

Privileged to be leading a Cornish Celtic Way Pilgrimage for McCabe Pilgrimages this week. Today we walked from Padstow (where we learnt about St Petroc) to Constantine Bay via St Issey. Harlyn Bay was looking beautiful.....

Not Liverpool Cathedral but Newcastle - Newcastle, New South Wales that is! A cool space on a day when the thermometer hit 36 degrees Celsius….
#roundtheworldcruise
Humbling to see how many returned to worship yesterday - especially among the elderly and vulnerable, who had carefully carried out a risk assessment and decided that church was at least as safe as the supermarket! Faith has the power to conquer fear for a Pentecost people.....
View from the choir of a packed church for Nine Lessons and Carols at St Hilary Church this evening! The power of familiar music and traditional readings to move people emotionally never ceases to amaze me. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
Yesterday we were in Cape Canaveral and were privileged to get a front row seat at the launch of

Axiom Mission 3 to the International Space Station! Unexpected joys and surprises of this

St Hilary Church starting to look ready for Nine Lessons and Carols tonight at 7.30pm. Praying that the reduced choir numbers (asked to take a lateral flow test before coming) and other COVID-safe measures will ensure that everyone can relax, stay safe and worship well.

Today is the annual Goldsithney Charter Fair, first mentioned in the records of St Michael's Mount in 1140AD! Then the day when villagers paid their local taxes and minor criminals were tried and sentenced, today a combination of music, dancing, various stalls and..... drinking!
@TruroCathedral
@RevSimonR
An inspired choice for Interim Dean; the obvious and absolutely right choice for permanent Dean! Many congratulations

Wonderful Sung Eucharist for All Souls at St Hilary Church tonight. The Fauré Requiem, candles lit for those we have loved and lost, and contemplation of a powerful painting by local artist Andrew Harding.

Today we are navigating the Panama Canal. This is the Gatun Lock, an amazing feat of engineering, and an even more amazing feat of pilot navigation! Look at the narrow gap between the ship and the lock side….
