I can’t express enough how deeply grateful I am to have represented Michigan’s 9th district in Congress the last four years. Though my term has concluded, please keep in touch with me on here or
@Andy_Levin
. Onward!
When I became a member of the 116th Congress, I took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Today, I announce that I have concluded that the House has a duty to open an impeachment inquiry into the conduct of President Donald J. Trump.
I am chilled to the bone by the idea that any Jewish person of conscience could applaud Trump saying “Our country’s full, you can’t come in,” much less cheering raucously. Not long ago, it was we who were turned away from these shores by such prejudiced sentiments. For shame.
It feels sickening to sit here — as a two-time cancer survivor — and listen to a man who has repeatedly proposed cutting the National Institutes of Health budget use the story of a child cancer survivor for applause. What has he done to speed cancer research? Nothing!
We have majorities in both chambers of Congress. I can’t look a grieving community and fearful families in the eye and tell them nothing can be done.
Abolish the filibuster.
Pass gun violence prevention laws — now!
Yesterday, I traveled to the southern West Bank, including the Palestinian village of Susya, which the Israeli government has destroyed twice and currently denies access to water.
Mr. Trump has been violating the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution each and every day since he took office. His intertwining of his business dealings with governance and his profiting off his office are beyond improper.
Expanding the court isn’t radical. Congress has changed the size of SCOTUS seven times before. What’s radical is letting a far-right majority strike down constitutional human rights after nearly 50 years.
I will work to build a consensus in the House Democratic Caucus to begin this process, and I will reach across the aisle to engage Republican colleagues about the urgent need to protect our democracy.
#Coronavirus
requires a WWII-scale effort to produce supplies, like protective equipment for health care workers, on a massive scale. 56 colleagues and I called on the President to invoke the Defense Production Act to produce what we need to protect Americans now. We can't wait.
The rail companies are presenting America with a false choice: accept a work stoppage or accept a contract rejected by thousands of workers. How about this: Congress can prevent a work stoppage by listening to the workers & adding a modest amount of paid sick leave to the deal.🧵
I have concluded that the only way to get to the bottom of Mr. Trump’s activities and inform the public about what we learn is to centralize and expedite the process through one select committee with the focus, power and urgency that come with an impeachment inquiry.
As the Mueller Report makes clear, on 10 or more occasions the President did obstruct justice or sought to obstruct justice, including by firing or attempting to fire people who were investigating him.
I’m amazed—a democratically elected body of Chilean citizens has written a proposed constitution that enshrines a healthy environment, abortion and health care as human rights. (1/2)
I have concluded that, absent an impeachment inquiry, even if our appeals to the courts continue to succeed, they will follow a timeline far too slow to meet the needs of the American people for truth and justice.
His attitude towards foreign interference in our election process, the very heartbeat of our democracy, chills me to the bone, from his invitation to Vladimir Putin to meddle during 2016 to his comments this week about the 2020 election.
Last month, 185 Israeli scientists, intellectuals & activists, inc. 10 Israel Prize winners, urged the ICC to investigate possible Israeli war crimes independently & not to rely on the Israeli government’s own accounts. I must admit I didn’t even see this.
Former union organizer here. Safe to say I’m heartened to see the strike wave around the country. There’s nothing more beautiful than workers utilizing the power of solidarity to stand together and demand higher wages, better benefits and safer working conditions.
Yet we watched the government utility, right before our eyes, lay in pipes right across the village’s land to deliver tap water to an illegal Israeli outpost nearby.
Can we really expect to get to a world of peace and justice for all if we are not willing to hold everyone accountable for war crimes & human rights violations? I will continue to join
@Ilhan
in asking these questions and condemn these attacks against her.
My point again: it's one thing to say someone owns a media outlet. It's another to say a Jew “owns the media.” Or to treat American Jews and the state of Israel as one in the same.
I've dealt with anti-Semitism all my life. I don't need you to explain it to me, Senator.
What utter nonsense. Its NAME is “Bloomberg News.” He literally owns it. There is no stronger supporter of Israel or foe of antisemitism in the Senate; instead get the House to pass my resolution (passed Senate 100-0) calling out Left-wing antisemitic comments of your colleagues.
I have some thoughts to share on the situation in
#Kashmir
, the Modi regime in India, and the rise of ethno-nationalism around the world. Give it a read.
As a member of Congress and
@HouseForeign
, I am very concerned about the disinformation deployed by the “Rechazo” campaign in Chile and
@meta
,
@twitter
and
@tiktok_us
’ inadequate response.
These tactics undermine democracy. We need answers.
Words matter. Owning the media outlet carrying this message is indeed a problem. However, accusing a Jewish candidate of owning “the media” is anti-Semitic.
Calling a provision mentioned not once, not twice, but in three parts of the Constitution phony is sad, indeed. Let us remove him, calmly and soberly, from the office he has betrayed.
This ruling essentially permits one of the largest forced displacements of Palestinians since 1967. This is an egregious violation of Palestinian human rights. (1/2)
Today I’m introducing the BUILD Green Act with
@SenWarren
,
@aoc
and
@SenMarkey
to turn the Green New Deal into a reality. Good-paying, green jobs and a new generation of sustainable construction & electrified transportation are more than possible. They’re necessary and just.
.
@RepJayapal
, after meeting privately with Pelosi for ~90 minutes, says she made clear to the Speaker: “At this point, if we don't have the reconciliation bill done, the infrastructure bill will not pass.”
Decades of special interest-funded Republican attacks on labor laws has created an American economy that doesn’t work for most Americans. This week, the House took crucial steps to fight back by passing the
#PROAct
to protect your right to join a union.
As a member of the Equality Caucus, I am proud to hang the transgender pride flag outside of my DC office during
#TransVisibilityWeek
. I want my transgender constituents to know that they
#WontBeErased
, and that I’m fighting for them.
Just toured the holding facility here. Can’t post videos or photos yet, but conditions are very difficult, indeed. People held in massively overcrowded cells for up to 60 days. Little access to showers or laundry. Over 600 single adults are being held here.
As a two-time cancer survivor and a dad of two kids with Crohn's disease, I know first-hand how outrageously expensive health care is. The
#MedicareforAll
Act is the solution, and I'm proud to join
@RepJayapal
,
@RepDebDingell
and over 100 of our colleagues as a cosponsor.
It’s unacceptable that Congress passed an $839,300,000,000 annual Pentagon budget but universal pre-K, paid family leave and climate action are deemed too expensive.
Progressives are sticking by the deal we made to protect
@POTUS
’ agenda and are ready to vote for both the bipartisan infrastructure deal AND the Build Back Better Act.
I’m deeply concerned by news of continued violence between Hindus & Muslims in the Tripura state of India & in Bangladesh. Provocative & brutal incitement by state and non-state actors against religious minorities must be condemned in the strongest terms.
It's terrifying but unsurprising that the violent mob storming the Capitol yesterday included rioters displaying blatant anti-Semitic imagery. This must not go unnoticed and unnamed. It is dangerous to Jewish Americans and our democracy itself.
I am working around the clock to get
#JimmyAldaoud
's remains transported back to the US so that he can receive a dignified Catholic funeral and be buried next to his mother in Michigan, the only home he has ever known. It is the least we can do for Jimmy.
A word of advice: before you start with Holocaust comparisons to public health measures - STOP🛑. Don’t disgrace the memory of over 6 million lost in a genocide as we fight to save lives in a pandemic.
I believe it is my duty to raise hard questions like whether we believe in accountability for everyone, inc. friends like Israel & ourselves. No honest observer can say the US didn't commit war crimes in Vietnam, Iraq & Afghanistan. Yes, all three. The cases are well-documented.
.
@Ilhan
also called for accountability. She clarified that she was not suggesting the US & Israel are like the Taliban & Hamas—but her questions did not equate them. Why seize that idea if not to serve other purposes or continue the sick sport of attacking Congresswoman Omar?
Friendly reminder to employers everywhere: if a majority of your employees come to you and ask that you recognize their union, it is perfectly legal and very cool to just say ok.
.
@IsraeliPM
: “Israel will apply its laws to the Jordan Valley and to the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria."
The word you're looking for is "annex," and it means disaster for Israel's future as a democratic Jewish state and the Palestinian people.
An EO from
@POTUS
today directs federal agencies to purchase electric vehicles and use carbon pollution-free electricity. Now we need my EV Freedom Act with
@AOC
, which would create a nationwide network of publicly available, high-speed electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
I swore to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
That is why I must support the immediate impeachment and removal of Donald J. Trump. He must be prevented from holding public office and wielding that power ever again.
NEW: I am circulating Articles of Impeachment that
@RepTedLieu
,
@RepRaskin
and I have prepared to remove the President from office following yesterday's attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Those of us long devoted to combating anti-Semitism must insist that it not be cheapened into a political tool to use against one’s enemies, at this moment above all when anti-Semitism is on the rise here and abroad.
Last night, I led a letter to Sec. Pompeo signed by 106 House Democrats rebuking the State Department for its reversal on Israeli settlements policy.
In ignoring international law, this administration has undermined America’s moral standing.
READ:
In order to begin reopening the economy & avoid devastating rebound infection waves like a century ago during the Spanish Flu pandemic, we need to test & trace on a mass scale. I’m working with
@SenWarren
& experts to begin this must-have effort on a national scale without delay.
I’m proud of the innovative work that Massachusetts &
@PIH
are doing to set up a contact tracing program to slow the spread of COVID-19. I’ve laid out a plan with
@RepAndyLevin
for a national contact tracing program & hope to learn from the Commonwealth’s leadership.
Means testing doesn’t actually save money. It only makes programs harder to administer, forces people to jump through hoops to get needed benefits and continues cycles of poverty.
Passing spending for roads and bridges without healthcare, childcare, pre-K, free community college and climate change while the American people continue to struggle in the middle of a pandemic? Make it make sense.
Thousands are suffering in Tigray due to the ongoing conflict in the region and grave human rights violations have been documented. The Ethiopian government must give aid organizations unfettered access to the region—now.
Questioning Israeli policy and practice is fair game, as with any other government. Saying the Jewish people have no rights to a homeland of our own is not.
I’m pleased to hear that
@POTUS
has forgave the debt of 31,850 Michiganders who were defrauded by Corinthian Colleges, Inc. Now, he must go broader and deliver for the 43.4 million Americans counting on him to
#CancelStudentDebt
.
I am alarmed by the potential forced displacement of more than 1,000 Palestinians living in
#MasaferYatta
to create space for a "firing zone." This inhumane act would constitute one of the largest displacements of Palestinians in decades.
I hope the US can play a major role in shining a light on the abuses being perpetrated on the people of
#Tigray
and continues to demand unfettered access for all humanitarian aid.
At the request of the new union, next week we will take legislative action to afford congressional staff the freedom to form a union — a fundamental right of all workers.
Women carry 58% of the more than $1.7 trillion of student loan debt in the U.S. Today would be a good day for President Biden to help close the gender wealth gap and

I am so proud that the House just passed my resolution H.Res 1096 - Recognizing Congressional Workers’ Right to Organize. This is a historic moment for the labor movement. Power to the people! ✊🏼
I'm happy to hear that
@AbbottNews
reached a deal with the
@FDA
to reopen the closed infant formula plant, but we have to address the systemic issues that got us here in the first place. It is unacceptable that only *three* companies control the entire infant formula market.
GOP may be so reflexively anti-union that they want to strip their employees of the chance to form one—but it's not that easy. Under the Congressional Accountability Act, rights that have been implemented can't simply be taken away absent new legislation to change the Act itself.
House GOP Rules BLOW TO CONGRESSIONAL LABOR UNION MOVEMENT: "• Eliminate Democrats’ creation of House staff labor unions so that Congressional staff are accountable to the elected officials they serve" per summary. cc:

Look at this amazing piece created by young artists in support of my BUILD GREEN Act with
@SenWarren
and
@AOC
! The next generation of organizers and activists has already picked up that the arts are vitally important to the struggle for justice. Very impressive!
Now that we know that Michigan will have one fewer seat in the U.S. House than over the last decade, it reinforces the importance of the constitutional amendment passed overwhelmingly by voters to ensure that voters will choose their elected officials, not the other way around.
The richest 1% of Americans own 56% of all stocks. The top 10% owns almost 90%.
This is why the stock market fails as an indicator of working families’ prosperity, and it’s why we need the
#PROAct
and
#RaiseTheWage
Act to rebuild the middle class.
I’m excited that my resolution to grant House staffers the right to unionize and bargain collectively will be considered on the House Floor next week. Congressional staff have waited long enough. Let’s go!
To reopen our economy, immediately get dislocated workers back on the job and get
#COVID19
under control, we need a national contact tracing program. I’m proud to work with
@SenWarren
on the plan to create the Coronavirus Containment Corps. Read our op-ed:
To combat rising costs in the grocery stores and gas pumps, I’m calling on
@POTUS
to
#CancelStudentDebt
for nearly 45 million Americans and put hundreds of dollars a month back into the pockets of working families who are struggling to pay their bills.
Jimmy's death was both horrific & avoidable. I introduced a bipartisan bill to prevent deportations like Jimmy's, but make no mistake - the Trump Administration could end these cruelties with the stroke of a pen.
This was the deadliest school shooting since 2018, the year our children rose up and asked us to take action, yet Congress has not enacted a single new law for our kids. This father urges our colleagues in the Senate to ACT, at long last.
#Enough

As a former union organizer, I consider it my life’s mission to help workers gain voice and power in this country. The PRO Act will do just that.
#PassThePROAct
The human suffering in Tigray is devastating and has received far too little attention. The Ethiopian government must allow aid organizations unfettered access to the region now.
Tigray: most rural areas, where 80% of the population resides, are still cut off from assistance.
The assistance provided so far is insufficient, as needs are rising rapidly. We continue to call for safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to the region.
The Chinese gov has long denied basic human rights in Tibet & has detained Uyghurs & other largely Muslim ethnic minorities in Xinjiang.
Now the US has lost our best vantage point to monitor these crises–but that can't stop us from upholding human rights.
The next renaissance of American manufacturing must be led and empowered by American workers in good-paying, union jobs. It must transition us to a clean and sustainable energy future within the decade. My forthcoming Green Procurement bill with
@SenWarren
will do just that.
We’re in uncharted waters. Allegations that the President sought to withhold aid Ukraine needed until it produced damaging information about a political opponent are without a doubt grounds for impeachment. I echo my earlier call for an impeachment inquiry.
It shouldn’t take a pandemic for our government to honor the right to water. But with the continuing spread of COVID-19, water access is more important than ever. That's why I cosponsored the Emergency
#WaterIsAHumanRight
Act with my colleagues
@RepRashida
&
@RepDebDingell
.
CODEPINK suggests I’m skipping the AIPAC trip to oppose “Apartheid Israel.” In fact, I'll be on a family vacation. I support a Jewish, democratic Israel, a two-state solution and Palestinian human rights. I was an anti-apartheid activist; Israel is not an apartheid state.
This is utterly tone deaf when you’re talking about a Jewish candidate who had family die in the Holocaust. Can we retire every Nazi comparison to Senator Sanders from this day forward, please?
This week, I became a cosponsor of
@RepJayapal
’s H.J.Res.745 as part of my mission to fight for human rights worldwide. The
#Kashmiri
people deserve the same rights of freedom of association, expression, movement and religion as we all do.
I call on India to release human rights activist Atikur Rahman, who has been detained on a bogus charge for nearly two years and whose health is in such poor condition that his life is at risk.
Last week, I called on the Indian government to respect the vital right to peaceful protest and to engage in good-faith talks to ensure farmers’ livelihoods are preserved. Read my full statement in the Congressional record:
Let me get this straight: the largest oil and gas companies raked in $174,000,000,000 in profits last year, but Republicans are still blaming President Biden for the rise in gas prices?
I'm very disturbed by this news. This unjust trial is further evidence that the U.S. Congress must make meaningful cuts to U.S. military assistance and reexamine the U.S.-Egypt relationship. We must stop arming human rights abusers.
Injustice beyond belief.
Activist Alaa Abdel Fattah sentenced to 5 years in prison & human rights lawyer Mohamed el-Baqer and blogger Mohamed Oxygen sentenced to 4 years in prison by Egypt's emergency state security court, in a trial for which there can be no judicial appeal.
