In @CityJournal, I explore a social question: Why would Columbia junior Yunseo Chung, a straight-A Korean immigrant who has lived in the US for years, join pro-Hamas protests alongside the likes of Mahmoud Khalil? My take: That’s the only way for Asian kids to be deemed “cool.”

Happy Fourth! I love America, and as the daughter and granddaughter of Indian immigrants, I was told, repeatedly, to never take the privilege and honor of being an American for granted. I never will; I’m so grateful. This year, I wrote about my love for America in @CityJournal.

I wonder why SCOTUS took up these cases so soon after Skrmetti, yet denied cert in Coalition for TJ & Boston Parent Coalition (cases on anti-Asian admissions policies to selective public high schools) following SFFA. (Obvi I’m thrilled the Court granted cert in the former cases!).
Big news on today's Supreme Court order list: The justices will hear two cases next term on whether states may exclude transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s teams based on the sex they were assigned at birth.

It’s here! My take on how Mamdani won NYC’s “Asian” vote is out in @CityJournal. Spoiler: Mamdani won b/c he didn’t treat “Asians” as a monolith. He used identity politics + heavy outreach with Bangladeshis, Pakistanis & Indian Sikhs, and help from sen. John Liu with East Asians.

How did Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old socialist, win NYC’s Democratic mayoral primary? He “blended culture and politics into a lifestyle brand.” Indeed, Mamdani’s campaign “became the hottest club in town,” writes MI senior multimedia producer @IsabellaRedjai for @CityJournal.
Zohran Mamdani turned his campaign into a lifestyle brand. With today’s influencer-driven economy, young voters couldn’t resist “the vibe” and voted for what Mamdani was selling them. Read my latest on this in my recent @CityJournal piece:.

Mamdani’s mother is a world-famous, Academy Award-nominated Bollywood director worth tens of millions of dollars. His father is a chaired professor at Columbia. He is, in effect, a perpetual theatre kid who’s pretending to be “Third World.” It’s all so, so performative + stupid.

Alright, but that doesn’t magically make a policy that is likely illegal, legal. A Supreme Court that banned racial preferences in Students for Fair Admissions, and a Department of Justice that is dedicated to enforcing the principle in that decision, certainly won’t think so.
I know you don’t live here, but the most expensive homes that he wants to raise property taxes on are, in fact, in richer and whiter neighborhoods. Hope this helps!.

Kim (a Korean American) represents District 40 in the New York State Assembly, which includes parts of Flushing and has a sizable Chinese and Korean population. He got his start in then-Councilmember (now State Senator) John Liu’s office. Liu formally endorsed Mamdani on June 2.
Congrats @ZohranKMamdani on your historic win tonight! The whole world will finally know that Assemblymembers don’t just assemble stuff anymore.

This is further proof that Mamdani didn’t win Asians by +15 overall (per NYT) solely because of South Asian enclaves. He also won because he made inroads with NYC’s East Asian community—in part by securing an endorsement from John Liu—and encroached on Cuomo’s support there.
