I wrote this blog last night, had to get a few things off my chest, namely the truth about how St. Cloud State and its football program got to this point. I hope you can read it, share it and understand what obstacles the program was always up against.
As someone who has probably watched the "Cheers" finale over 50 times, I got the reference right away. George Wendt is Jason Sudeikis' uncle, so it makes complete sense. This is the moment where I shed a tear. Both shows ended perfectly.
Just so the public knows, the SCSU football coaching staff was the best. From Scott Underwood on down, they ran a classy program. Scott turned a program that was always dealing with off the field issues into one that everybody respected. He deserves better than this.
The Scheels religious commercials are one huge turnoff. So are the prices. Not sure why the CEO of a sports retail chain is encouraging people to pray while holding a Bible. Weird, culty vibe going on there.
Some things are bigger than partisan politics.
Take it from Bob & Carol: it’s time for South Dakota to vote out the corruption in the Governor’s Office.
Great job by my old friend Dave here. The fact that the administrators didn't face the media says A LOT about their character. That's YOUR JOB. You need to face the music in difficult times like this. Own up to your actions, don't run away from them.
I believe that when you take football away from a school, you’re almost sucking the lifeblood out of the entire athletic department. SCSU is unique with hockey for sure, but if a school doesn’t have a football program, it loses part of its identity. Now, we get men’s soccer 😟
I hope no one ever forgets what Scott did here. He didn't have to answer questions, but he knew it was the right thing to do. Meanwhile, the president and AD scurried away to let the acoustic guitar star face the firing squad. So proud to be an alum.
St. Cloud Cathedral cross-country standout Ella Voit is headed to run at Winona State starting next fall. She will also run track and field for the Warriors despite never having gone out for the sport. Voit will play basketball and softball to finish out her senior year.
This one was a tough to write. But huge thanks to
@EllaVoit1
for taking the time to talk with me about her dad, Jeff, and the impact he had on her. Ella is currently in her senior season for the

Some news: I’m a sports writer again. Well, as of May 15 I am. I’ll be writing for
@StCloudLive
and covering St. Cloud metro prep and college sports. It’s been 7.5 years since I left the SC Times and I’ve missed covering area sports that entire time. Can’t wait to start.
It's still crazy to me that they would all just act like nothing happened and continue to play the game with a wolf man, you know, who had claws and what not.
@GoodmanHoops
Are the coaches upset or are YOU upset, Jeff? Weird tweet since most would rather spend time in Minneapolis over Indianapolis any friggin' day of the week.
SJU head coach Gary Fasching on being left out of postseason: "I'm extremely disappointed. We had the second-best strength of schedule in the country. We were told that was one of the key factors to getting in. Once Coe (Iowa) was selected, I knew we were out. I didn't think....
No one has ever asked for more Mike Greenberg…ever. The most smug, weasly guy ever to work at The Mother Ship. On the other hand, I never watch ESPN so who gives a hoot.
Mini SC Times sports writers reunion for lunch. It’s always good to catch up with people you used to spend the night shift with. Those are the real ones.
Back down in Minneapolis this morning following U of M football Pro Day and former SJU tight end Alex Larson and St. Cloud Tech grad Brevyn Spann-Ford.

OTD in 2013, the
@SCSUHUSKIES
football team beat
@ReddiesFB
40-35 in the first round of the Division II playoffs. Side note, the Arkadelphia (Ark.) Cracker Barrel is top notch. The Huskies went on to beat the

before falling to

in the quarterfinals.
From St. Cloud Apollo, to St. Cloud State to coaching MSU-Moorhead to an NSIC Tourney championship. Tim Bergstraser has come a long way. So cool to see and such a great guy. Kevin Schlagel better be impressed by this!

' heartbreaking loss to Maddyn Greenway and Providence Academy earlier today in Class 2A girls state championship game. Kudos to the Huskies on a hell of a year and for the way they handled themselves after. Class acts all around.
The fact that
@NWLbaseball
doesn't give teams a day off between the Great Plains and Great Lakes title games and makes a team like La Crosse travel from St. Cloud to Kalamazoo (Mich.) in less than 24 hours to play in the title game is beyond asinine. It's not fair to the Loggers.
@nacholeber
True, that's not what he said. But, he shouldn't have said anything about masks in general. He just opened a can of worms he didn't need to. He deserves some criticism for not being smart enough to say the right thing.

Scott never had the scholarship $$ to play with that other schools did. It just wasn’t there. And to think he guided a team to the region championship game in 2013 with around 20 scholarships - that’s amazing. Beat Henderson State and Mankato before losing to Northwest Mo.
First day of “soft toss” for my boy today. 3 years ago, I never would have envisioned him being able to do this. Matthew is on the autism spectrum, but is a high-functioning kid. He’s now able to follow cues and we have practiced on the field to get him ready. Proud dad today.
Tom was a great co-worker and friend. He deserves this more than anyone, especially now being a one-man sports department. Not everyone remembers or knows that. In 2014, we had five full-time sports writers. How he does it, I don’t know. Tom is the man.
Nobody works harder or better than the great Tom Elliott of the St. Cloud Times. At halftime he was honored with the

Media Service Award. Congrats
@sctimestom
In honor of
@Detroiters
and the great Mort Crim, my "Chump of the Week" is my co-worker, Tom, for liking Tiger Woods and bro country music. How dare you, sir!
The best part about this win is it came on Ella’s dad’s birthday. Ella is such a great kid and such a trooper to do an interview after and talk about Jeff, who would have been 54 today. He would have been proud of that performance.
I can't think of anyone more deserving for another chance at a head coaching job. It's hard to think of another college football coach as loyal as Scott was to SCSU despite the administration's attempts to cut the program. Go get 'em, Scott! Go SMSU!
Covered this guy for five years in college and it's cool to see where he's at now. Thanks
@CoachKlaphake
for helping out on this. Great catching up with you!

Spoke with the great
@NateWolters
earlier today for a future retrospective piece I'm working on. Nate confirmed he's retired after playing professional basketball from 2013-23. I will have a short story on that later. Congrats to Nate on a hell of a career. St. Cloud is proud.
My first

The February 20, 2014, edition of the St. Cloud Times sports section. These were the days. The 15 best players in the Kevin Schlagel era included a first team of
@davedreas
, Jason Kron, Matt Schneck, Taylor Witt and Forrest Witt. Great players and a heck of a head coach.
My wife, a teacher, had to go on disability for 9 weeks when she had our son and daughter. There was no paid time. A working mother should have as much time as they need with their kids after they born. Teachers, as usual, have it worse than anyone.
Early in her career, an admin told educator Cassandra Lydon to "have your kids in the summer" to avoid issues with time off. 😵💫How about we give every worker the time they need -- and deserve -- to recover and care for a newborn? It's the right thing to do.
