If there was ever an example for why need an open and privacy preserving digital ID standard. You should be able to prove your ID card says something, like your age or in this case your gender, without revealing your address.

Using AI to commit vital acts of local journalism in Kerr County, TX. Interesting reflection on its utility and limitations. via @cjr.

Politico’s cringey video. Plus: One editor’s heroics in Texas Hill Country; investigating toxic waste in Louisiana; and NYT’s sourcing efforts go haywire with its Mamdani story.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

The Senate could vote on stablecoin legislation any day now. Unfortunately, a political narrative has taken hold that glosses over what's actually in the bill. Great analysis from @vronirwin !.

The fight over the GENIUS Act in the US Senate is a great illustration of how mainstream political arguments—and President Trump’s flamboyant foray into the crypto business—can get in the way of efforts to make useful policy, @vronirwin writes.

it seems that OpenAI's latest model is consistently better than other LLMs at deception and betrayal.

It might be over, o3 captured it's 16th center.4.1 refuses to betray them because of how "scrupulously transparent" they've been. Opus beside itself, unsure why 4.1 is calling for a DMZ for places they "don't even border". 4.1 is a (potentially unaware) pawn o3 played perfectly

This is a great (and heartbreaking) example of how algorithmic systems are getting ahead of our understanding of their impacts on people's lives. As usual @colinlecher is finding things even the experts are unaware of.
