I do think people really underestimate how important the “Tatum has no exploitable weaknesses and can play any role” thing is. The focus is always on the highs elite players can hit but rarely do we even acknowledge the lows
@AdamDavis
Since 2017, Kyrie has played 63% of his team's regular season games and 45% of their playoff games, including 2 seasons where his team missed the playoffs entirely
Insulting Tatum by saying he’s a better version of Paul George is always so funny to me, if you made Paul George 5-10% better at everything he’d have won multiple MVPs by now
24 Celtics: 64-18, +11.7, +17.2 in Ws, -7.8 in Ls
Clutch: 21-12, +15.4
17 Warriors: 67-15, +11.4, +16.4 in Ws, -11.1 in Ls
Clutch: 16-9, +7.4
Where did the notion the Celtics are underperforming front runners come from???
Celtics final awards slate for a top 10 regular season ever:
1x first team
2x second defense
2x All Star
That’s IT
People want to claim they underperform. But also don’t respect their players
2023-24 All-NBA:
1st: Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum
2nd: Jalen Brunson, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, Kawhi Leonard
3rd: Devin Booker, Stephen Curry, Tyrese Haliburton, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis
I’m going to keep beating this drum. The media, and most casual fans, do not like or care about basketball. They want an ubermensch and basketball is merely a vehicle for that, Tatum is never going to satisfy the image they want and so this will never end
The Celtics finished 5 full points better on net rating this year than last year. The Nuggets net rating this year is 5.5. I’m sick of hearing that we’ve seen this from them before
@alpacinogrunt
A lot of people miss this. Having the 4 guys next to you *always* maximized is almost categorically more valuable than more individual production but other guys having to conform
7 minutes for my 6th man
5 minutes for my 7th guy
44 minutes for every starter, 48 for Josh hart
4 minutes for my 8th guy
Someone help me budget this, my players are all injured
The fact that every team he’s ever been on just seems to gel and overperform their talent level isn’t a coincidence! He’s a team building cheat code. The superteam thing is stupid on its face but also to the extent it is true is actually what sets him apart
Probably Aaron nesmith should average 4 flagrants a game. I don’t think he plays dirty, but there’s a level of recklessness where it doesn’t matter what you were trying to do
I beat this drum to death last night but the pacers offense is insanely good. We cannot stop them from getting open shots, we can just somewhat influence what spot on the floor those come, rebound, and then outscore them
Picking The Field has become an epidemic. You are not special for predicting a team will fail! Most teams do! You don’t have “hater power” or whatever, you just selected the overwhelming statistically likely scenario!
@twnkiehuntr
@Handsome_Jake_
The 89 Pistons are the only team with 62 or more wins in since the merger with 0 All-NBA players. Truly one of the most disrespected players ever
I’m cool w/calling the Celtics a superteam. But if you’re going to call them that then you have to reward them like they are. Every superteam (KD Warriors, Heatles, Big 3 Celtics) had 3 things in common: 1 top 5 MVP, 2 all-NBA, 3 all-stars minimum. ‘24 Celtics have none of that
Celtics fans really take for granted how insane it is that the Cs have missed the playoffs once since 07. If a lot of them were less busy cosplaying as hardos and yelling about championships they'd understand that they probably have had the most fun team to root for in that time
I want to take this moment to plug my blog, I did an incredibly in depth dive into why the Nuggets wouldn't be repeat champions a little under a month ago, you can read it here. If you're looking for good analysis grounded in historical data, Im your guy
Pacers 3% has dropped 10 points this quarter and suddenly were running away with it. I’m not saying defensive intensity never affects shots, but I think the vast majority of things we call “effort” are just variance
I think broadly, Tatum Stan Twitter should start mentally preparing for voters to give out fMVP in some sort of incomprehensible way so we can skip the Stan wars and go straight to celebrating the title
Not saying I agree with it, but it’s the media landscape now
Given the choice between an absurd payroll and a good home crowd, I’d obviously choose the former, but all the “why are the Celtics bad at home???” takes are willfully ignoring this
Jaylen Brown asked why he doesn't seem happy after the win: "Would you be? We almost dropped a game on our home floor. We need to come out and be better in Game 2."
I dunno, I’ve never been a fan of positionless awards teams, why bother at that point? Just give awards to everyone top 10 in DPOY voting and t15 in MVP voting (expand the borda count slots too) and call it a day, you’re just inviting weird voting patterns this way
Awards voters are so weird lol. “It’s important to us that guards get some recognition, but also it’s important that everyone know we do so with contempt”
“Even if the Celtics win this title, they probably won’t win the next one”
No shit dude! It’s insanely hard to win one title, let alone two, much less two in a row! What the hell are we doing! Hater sports culture is a plague
The jayson Tatum stuff is crazy because outside of the warriors series, he has legitimately been the best player on the planet when his back is against the wall since that run at the end of 2021. Absurd stuff. Not always when you want him but always on time
@Handsome_Jake_
I'm very much team "clutch stats are illusory" at this point except in rare circumstances (see for ex: 2022 Celtics), they appear to be relevant so far as they roughly correlate with general team quality but aren't actually particularly predictive beyond that
10-2. 8 double digit wins. +42 clutch minutes net rating in the other 2. Second only the Minnesota, who we lead in every clutch stat except shooting %.
I’m told this is bad actually
I do really need Tatum to stop taking these middies. I don’t care what the media says or about whatever “will” or “aura” people think you need, taking good shots is better than taking bad shots
Obviously, no one is entitled to an NBA coaching job, that’s ridiculous, but at the same time it will never sit right with me when GMs use their coach as a fall guy for their mediocre roster construction
I’m on a bit of a rant right now but it’s getting absurd. If your entire reaction to seeing the most insane athletes on the planet doing absurd things every night is “meh, it’s not that great” then I don’t know what the hell we’re doing here. Get into religion or something else!
Tim Legler is on record saying Tatum was great but his efficiency (11-25) made him still doubt if he’s good enough, then today called Ant the face of the league after shooting 6-24. Abysmal man
I kind of think rooting for the weaker team is beneath Celtics fans - we have the juggernaut, we shouldn’t care who we play - but I’m lying if i said getting the Mavericks and sweeping the CF and finals doesn’t get me excited
Crunch time. I’m already satisfied this series has shown the nuggets are who I’ve been saying they are, but if they don’t win this game at this point that should be the death of that image for them.
The Tillman stuff is funny. I feel for it a bit in the cavs series because like, eye test wise it’s like “we’re really just going to let them shoot over Al like that???” And then you look at the numbers and it’s “oh yea, for sure, just let them do that, whatever”
@MazzullaMauler
There is 0 chance he’d trade him for giannis or luka. Both place a lot more limitations on roster construction and Giannis is probably a bit old to be taking risks like that, luka is just much much worse overall. Other two are maybes
@JazzJargon
Tatum was drafted with another teams pick, his team hadn’t missed the playoffs in 3 years and had just been to the conference finals the year before. No part of this was tanking
Boston media has made their money on this for years, they just predict the team will *eventually* lose, then lord over the fact that they were right over fans. Stop defining what you think won’t happen and instead stake out a real hill to die on! Be more interesting!
@PutxiWhipped
@SeanGrandePBP
Ha, give over, he has multiple elite teammates, he gets no more double teams than any of the other star players who have much better shooting splits.
I like Tatum, but it’s ok to say he’s shooting poorly in these playoffs
@MazzullaMauler
Access journalism has killed any serious discussion of the sport by national media. You play ball and support their guys and you get inside scoops, really all it is at this point, you can’t trust it at all
Ant is dribbling a lot of possessions down to like 8 seconds before throwing the ball to someone in a tough spot right now, need to see him either play faster or figure out a way to use the collapsing defense against them
Trying to get a feel here. Anyone who feels let down somehow by last nights game or that the Celtics have generally underperformed I have 3 questions
Do you think this roster is t10 all time in talent?
What does that say about Tatum?
Is it still true with no KP?
Look I know the heat have the most talent, but can we trust them? Lebron had that awful collapse in the 11 finals, not sure he’s the guy. They just took 7 to deal with the ancient Celtics. Thunder have Kevin Durant, he just won the scoring title, I’d probably pick them.
@DanielfromSport
There should probably be a review committee of like, 30 guys from smaller outlets who can vote to strip certain guys voting rights if like 80% agree a ballot is outside the realm of debate
One of the things I love about the playoffs is there are REAL differences from the regular season that affect our analysis, but also basketball is at its core a variance sport and there are small sample blips, sifting through the noise is really fun
Game 7s are that on steroids
I love the wolves, they’re awesome, but part of roster construction is offense and the wolves are a below average offensive team so it’s hard to say they’re “complete”
Not an overstatement to say the 0-2 deficit is 100% on Ant & KAT. 100 percent.
They have the most complete roster in the league and have shown that. Their supporting cast has been excellent.
Those two guys have sucked. Like, really and truly sucked.
I am basically universally on the side of “no matter how stupid the thing the player said about money is, leave them alone, going after them only serves the owners.” But Dray talking about fines probably crosses the stupid threshold for me, Jesus man have some sense
I would NOT bet against Denver in the mile high in a game 7, but the Wolves have proven a very important point this series win or lose
The nuggets are exactly as good as their record says they are
I like Ant a lot but I wish reporters were open to other storylines, this game was won by Towns, Reid, and Gobert, incredible performances by the big rotation tonight
@MazzullaMauler
We’ll see, history says those shake ups are usually less impactful than perceived, far more scared of a Chris finch defense than lukaball
@Paullyt5
@Samothecat
??? Young teams perform badly at a really high rate. That’s math. It suggests there is something different about younger teams that makes them weaker in playoff scenarios, what would you attribute it to?
@Samothecat
“Choking” is probably my least favorite term in sports, it assigns virtue to what is essentially ordering. This isn’t baseball where a reliever can come in and blow a lead someone else made, any lead you blow you had to create!
Brunson getting 5th in MVP votes but making 2nd team is a fair thing to poke at and say “hey that’s weird, what’s happening here” but I think probably the explanation is MVP broke down as an award in 2017 and no one really votes coherently anymore
I want to take this moment to plug my blog, I did an incredibly in depth dive into why the Nuggets wouldn't be repeat champions a little under a month ago, you can read it here. If you're looking for good analysis grounded in historical data, Im your guy
Its very weird to me that people are like "The Celtics don't have the highest tier of talent, they just have a lot of guys who are very good" and then conclude this would somehow be a bad thing if they won the title
@MazzullaMauler
Also like, the biggest critique of joe is he’s slow to adjust. His preparations have been brilliant all year, big picture and game to game strategy he’s been absurdly good
I get that +/- can be a loud stat but how do you watch the Celtics collapse for 7 straight years every time Tatum goes to the bench, still manage to have the most playoff series wins since he entered the league, and then run with a superteam narrative outside of being dishonest?
@Handsome_Jake_
I don’t think people understand that if you can stop a team from getting consistent open looks you can put a series outside the realm of variance and beat them by being that much better
You cannot stop the Pacers from getting consistent open looks
@Handsome_Jake_
I’d expect a few more to feel like that, Indy just generates a LOT of open shots a game and makes everyone look a bit foolish and I’m not sure anyone can totally shut that off
I think probably trying to rank coaches linearly like this is a mistake, but Mazzulla, Finch, and Carlisle are all excellent. I’m not convinced Kidd is particularly good but he’s done some impressive things with his team relative to their deficiencies
I admittedly do not follow the W as much as I’d like (personally need a home team as a vehicle to get invested in a sport usually), but it really feels like almost all the Caitlin Clark discourse boils down to either “I didn’t expect professional athletes to be good” or racism
We all understand K*C’s formula is “get dunked on for bad take, and then double up on it via bookmarks getting aired later” right? We’re literally just giving him money and notoriety by dunking
I’m actually reasonably confident we’d sweep Dallas. I don’t have any actual data that I’d back this up with, just feels like we ought to. They’re not very good and I think Kyrie coming to town would wake the crowd up in a very real way
“Don’t be a conspiracy theorist, the rich aren’t conspiring to ruin the world”
“No of course not, it’s just a way to talk about material conditions and structural forces”
Probably a conversation I’ve had a hundred times now but no, there is quite literally a group chat
@MazzullaMauler
It’s hard to say because that 22 team was an all time anomaly and is insanely hard to evaluate. I think they have similar weaknesses (limited shot creation) but are probably better suited to handle it than the Cs were and the coaching is truly worlds apart
Anyways,
Jamal Murray in wins these playoffs:
22 on 44/36/91, 7:2 AST:TO
in losses:
14 on 30/21/90 4:3 AST:TO
He is the lynchpin, as good as jokić is, Murray is the one who changes them from a good team with an amazing player to a real contender
@MazzullaMauler
Yea Bud is a multi time coach of the year too. He’s in the elite of NBA coaches all time, just not the upper echelon. His strategies also included things like “what if we went 11 deep in playoff games” and “what if we just let them shoot corner 3s.” Joe is a FANTASTIC coach
@MazzullaMauler
KAT has better career accolades than Jaylen too if you don’t include playoff wins, which would admittedly be very weird to include given the context here, like what’re we doing here
@wojespn
Lot of folks in these comments who seem to think Porzingis is worth 15+ wins for a team already good enough to make the playoffs despite not being an all star
@DanielfromSport
I really liked his aggression in the second half but like towns played his absolute heart out, naz was incredible! There’s other guys!
I just feel like for a guy whose main strength is supposedly his mindset, Edwards has been awfully comfortable this half deferring to Mike Conley, whose main plan seems to be generating gobert post ups or NAW 3s
@Handsome_Jake_
Gotta imagine joe just figures the offensive glass would be worse than the pull ups, that said would love to see them try, even for 1 minute
Trade deadline acquisitions are basically never able to cure things like failing 40/20, Clyde Drexler in 95 is basically the sole exception, this is a what if in the same way IT’s hip in 2017 is a what if
