I do think people really underestimate how important the “Tatum has no exploitable weaknesses and can play any role” thing is. The focus is always on the highs elite players can hit but rarely do we even acknowledge the lows

I beat this drum to death last night but the pacers offense is insanely good. We cannot stop them from getting open shots, we can just somewhat influence what spot on the floor those come, rebound, and then outscore them

This has been my point all season. Their awards just have not made sense! Where are the wins coming from if no one is actually good???
I’m cool w/calling the Celtics a superteam. But if you’re going to call them that then you have to reward them like they are. Every superteam (KD Warriors, Heatles, Big 3 Celtics) had 3 things in common: 1 top 5 MVP, 2 all-NBA, 3 all-stars minimum. ‘24 Celtics have none of that

Celtics fans really take for granted how insane it is that the Cs have missed the playoffs once since 07. If a lot of them were less busy cosplaying as hardos and yelling about championships they'd understand that they probably have had the most fun team to root for in that time

I went to Game 5 of the 2018 ECF and sat in Loge 19 at the TD Garden for $300ish. That same ticket (no resale) is $700 now

I dunno, I’ve never been a fan of positionless awards teams, why bother at that point? Just give awards to everyone top 10 in DPOY voting and t15 in MVP voting (expand the borda count slots too) and call it a day, you’re just inviting weird voting patterns this way

The jayson Tatum stuff is crazy because outside of the warriors series, he has legitimately been the best player on the planet when his back is against the wall since that run at the end of 2021. Absurd stuff. Not always when you want him but always on time

I'm very much team "clutch stats are illusory" at this point except in rare circumstances (see for ex: 2022 Celtics), they appear to be relevant so far as they roughly correlate with general team quality but aren't actually particularly predictive beyond that

Tim Legler is on record saying Tatum was great but his efficiency (11-25) made him still doubt if he’s good enough, then today called Ant the face of the league after shooting 6-24. Abysmal man

The Tillman stuff is funny. I feel for it a bit in the cavs series because like, eye test wise it’s like “we’re really just going to let them shoot over Al like that???” And then you look at the numbers and it’s “oh yea, for sure, just let them do that, whatever”

There is 0 chance he’d trade him for giannis or luka. Both place a lot more limitations on roster construction and Giannis is probably a bit old to be taking risks like that, luka is just much much worse overall. Other two are maybes

Look I know the heat have the most talent, but can we trust them? Lebron had that awful collapse in the 11 finals, not sure he’s the guy. They just took 7 to deal with the ancient Celtics. Thunder have Kevin Durant, he just won the scoring title, I’d probably pick them.

One of the things I love about the playoffs is there are REAL differences from the regular season that affect our analysis, but also basketball is at its core a variance sport and there are small sample blips, sifting through the noise is really fun

I love the wolves, they’re awesome, but part of roster construction is offense and the wolves are a below average offensive team so it’s hard to say they’re “complete”
Not an overstatement to say the 0-2 deficit is 100% on Ant & KAT. 100 percent.
They have the most complete roster in the league and have shown that. Their supporting cast has been excellent.
Those two guys have sucked. Like, really and truly sucked.

“Choking” is probably my least favorite term in sports, it assigns virtue to what is essentially ordering. This isn’t baseball where a reliever can come in and blow a lead someone else made, any lead you blow you had to create!

Brunson getting 5th in MVP votes but making 2nd team is a fair thing to poke at and say “hey that’s weird, what’s happening here” but I think probably the explanation is MVP broke down as an award in 2017 and no one really votes coherently anymore

I think probably trying to rank coaches linearly like this is a mistake, but Mazzulla, Finch, and Carlisle are all excellent. I’m not convinced Kidd is particularly good but he’s done some impressive things with his team relative to their deficiencies

It’s hard to say because that 22 team was an all time anomaly and is insanely hard to evaluate. I think they have similar weaknesses (limited shot creation) but are probably better suited to handle it than the Cs were and the coaching is truly worlds apart

Yea Bud is a multi time coach of the year too. He’s in the elite of NBA coaches all time, just not the upper echelon. His strategies also included things like “what if we went 11 deep in playoff games” and “what if we just let them shoot corner 3s.” Joe is a FANTASTIC coach

Trade deadline acquisitions are basically never able to cure things like failing 40/20, Clyde Drexler in 95 is basically the sole exception, this is a what if in the same way IT’s hip in 2017 is a what if
