perhaps a pivot from grim, frustrating news towards grim, frustrating retrospection? this is a really sharp -- and remarkably concise -- encapsulation of where we are now, five years on, and why.

It feels as if the pandemic is behind us. But we’re living in the world it made.

Truly can't imagine a greater opportunity for a municipal politician to do right by their constituents than the one Olivia Chow has just been given. Torontonians campaigned for, voted for, supported -- with not just sentiment but tax dollars! -- those bike lanes.

had a lovely time chatting with Kaniehtiio Horn about her debut feature, SEEDS (essential viewing for my fellow Graham Greene stans) for @GlobeArts

Horn spoke to The Globe about taking the reins on her own project, working collaboratively, and honouring her people’s history and connection to the land

Story up now: Ford announces 'feasibility study' but then vows regardless to build a massive tunnel under Highway 401, potentially from Mississauga to Scarborough, to fight traffic congestion. No mention of costs, but likely many billions #ONpoli

happy Sally Rooney day! @michellecyca kindly reviewed for the Globe:

Though at times it falls short of its ambitions, Intermezzo reaffirms Rooney’s ability to portray a microcosm of human existence with precision and insight

when i wax nostalgic about the Toronto of the early 2000s i tend to omit the fact that the near-total lack of bike infrastructure on main roads meant your two commuting options as a cyclist were circuitous “secondary” routes that covered like four times the distance, or peril.
Doug Ford talking about bike lanes legislation his government is working on, says he wants to see them on "secondary" roads, not on main arterial roads. He explicitly calls out the Bloor St West bike lanes (a local Etobicoke issue) as a problem. #ONpoli

While last night’s #TIFF24 protest – and the audience reaction – landed as uncomfortable surprise to some, it also crystallized complex realities. Ones that every arts org, and every protest movement confronting such institutions, will have to reckon with.

Ben Stiller was on hand for the debut of his charming holiday comedy Nutcrackers, the festival’s official opening-night selection. Which is where things got complicated
