Penguins won deepest division, had 4th-most man-games lost, played 12 defenseman in first month, GM quit, Evgeni Malkin missed 20-plus games.
If Mike Sullivan doesn’t win Adams & Crosby the Hart, it’s flatly anti-Penguins bias. They would with any other franchise.
Good night!
Sidney Crosby has received an Order of Canada appointment for contribution to his country.
Crosby will be an officer of the Order of Canada for “being one of the greatest hockey players of all time and for supporting community service initiatives for youth."
MacKinnon: 3 series wins in 1st 8 seasons
McDavid: 1 series win in 1st 6 seasons
Matthews: 0 series wins in 1st 5 seasons
Crosby: 7 series wins, two SCF appearances, 1 Cup win in 1st 4 seasons — and for a lot of people, that wasn’t good enough.
Whatever.
Details for Penguins:
RW Kasperi Kapanen
D Jesper Lindgren
LW Pontus Aberg
Maples Leafs getting:

From 2008-22 Penguins had greatest run in franchise history. They were entertaining, all-in, marquee & led by the greatest player of a generation.
If you’re bemoaning the current after experiencing all of that — it’s a YOU problem.
Pain was inevitable.
But yinz had it amazing.
Sidney Crosby is 34 on this day. He has won Stanley Cup (3), Hart, Art Ross and Conn Smythe (2, each), scored a Golden Goal, won two Olympic gold medals, and been MVP of World Cup of Hockey champion.
Kids, this is how living up to the hype is done.
Somehow, the Penguins rid themselves of another year of Kasperi Kapanen ($3.2M), to maybe bury Brock McGinn ($2.75M) in the AHL, so they could add a bottom-six center, Mikael Granlund, that will count $5M against cap each of next two seasons.
No words.
Alex Ovechkin is going to end up with more goals than Wayne Gretzky, every NHL individual honor, and a Stanley Cup winning performance for the ages.
Nobody is going to remember a bad week in April 2024.
He’s 38, has a rough series. Happens.

Forever … the Big Three that meant everything to
@penguins
If this was it, it’s been the honor of my professional life to cover Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang as teammates in Pittsburgh.
Amazing players. Better people.
My pitch to Penguins:
At center-ice Skating Penguin logo, above checkered circle paint “It’s A Great Day For Hockey” and at bottom paint “It’s A Hockey Night In Pittsburgh” — make both permanent as tributes to Bob Johnson and Mike Lange.
Thoughts?

1. Penguins have NOT asked Evgeni Malkin to waive his NTC
2. Malkin is NOT interested in waiving his NTC
3. There isn’t one team or a secret list regarding Malkin and NTC
4. His focus is on getting healthy, winning another title with Penguins
5. Nothing has changed
I’ll say this: It’s same system for every team, and credit to Islanders for exploiting it.
But to finish 3rd in a division with 42 losses is an indictment of the NHL points system.
GMs won’t change it; would risk their jobs.
But it’s time for 3 points for RW.
Day before GM 7 ‘09 SCF, I get Malkin 1 on 1, ask him what he’s thinking. He looks at pic of Lemieux/Jagr with arms crossed, standing back-to-back. Points at it.
“We win tomorrow. Me and Sid like them.”
Now look…
Not going just by Twitter, where rage is usually most prominent. Overall, this is the angriest I've seen Penguins fans in my two decades covering the team.
1 Gretzky
2 Lemieux
3 Orr
4 Crosby
5 Howe
6 Jagr
7 Ovechkin
8 Lindstrom
9 M Richard
10 Roy
That’s my NHL top 10.
Surely I’m omitting deserving players. And my mind can be changed.
There isn’t a right or wrong top 10. Not everything is an argument.
Share yours. Have fun.
If
@penguins
don’t give those in attendance mullet wigs for
@68Jagr
night, what are we even doing?
Actually, I want to see every player do warmups in 68 jerseys while wearing said mullet wigs.
Who’s with me?
Doubt it will happen, but I’d scratch Crosby, Malkin & Letang in Columbus were I Mike Sullivan. Out of respect.
They’ve never played in a game without postseason implications since getting together — no need to force it.
This mess isn’t on them.
Bad migraine several weeks ago. Few days after developed stutter, arm tremor.
Tests all look good.
Neurologist working migraine issue, mental health team on other stuff. Adjusting meds. Getting rest.

I’ll be OK. And back. 💚
Jaromir Jagr is taking pregame warmups for

after his jersey was retired.
Many players are wearing mullet wigs. All are wearing Jagr jerseys.

@TheAthleticNHL
Said it before.
Will keep saying it…
IF Penguins get into Stanley Cup playoffs, Sidney Crosby is the most valuable player to his team.
I mean, he actually is anyway. But he’ll be the embodiment of Hart Trophy qualification.
He’s 36, and carrying an organization on his back.
Look, in 23 weeks, I went from being unable to speak or use my right arm to tweeting about Penguins again — so forgive me for thinking a group led by Crosby, Malkin and Letang can similarly rally when counted out.
I don’t do doomsday anymore. Life’s too short.
6 weeks ago today a migraine turned into a stutter, tremor, Functional Neurological Disorders — and too many changes, none of my choosing, to count.
Blessed with great medical/psych team, amazing family & friends support, & huge encouragement from yinz. 🙏🏻💚
Improving. Slowly. 💪🏼
As of this moment, Sidney Crosby is on pace for 51 goals in his 19th NHL season.
That would match his career-high ... from his 5th NHL season.
Ludicrous.
Mike Bossy is one of the five best pure goal scorers in NHL history.
Sidney Crosby, NOT a natural goal scorer, just passed him on all-time list.
Young Penguins fans: Learn about Bossy.
Everyone else: Acknowledge Crosby.
If I’m a Penguins fan — and, again, I’m NOT a fan of any team — I’m more appreciative of 3 Cup wins with Crosby/Malkin after Bruins’ loss.
Bruins have had Bergeron/Marchand and some damn good teams. They got 1.
Winning
#StanleyCup
is hard, folks.
Next time somebody argues Sidney Crosby gets favorable treatment from NHL, maybe show them … pretty much any playoff game he’s played against a Barry Trotz coached team.
Oh, but these are all “hockey plays.” My bad.
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin &. Kris Letang dragging THIS Penguins team to the postseason should be recognized as their greatest non-Cup achievement. That they’re doing it in their mid-30s is nothing short of remarkable.
Evgeni Malkin’s folks haven’t been at one of his Penguins games in a half-decade. His parents spent 15 hours in 3 planes to get to Pittsburgh.
They’re exhausted. He’s over the moon.
Rough season.
But this was a heartwarming night.
Crosby: 18 consecutive seasons of a point per game
Ovechkin: 13 40-goal seasons
No, they didn’t merely live up to the hype.
They set the current standard for greatness. And they’re still doing it!
To the many great hockey fans from and/or in Arizona...
It's not your fault. It never has been.
You deserve an NHL franchise. A viable one. When you get it again, you'll show skeptics what I've experienced first-hand many times: You're hockey people.
Stay excellent ❤️
Connor McDavid is wow-gosh, and should be celebrated. But..
Sidney Crosby, as of Jan. 2, 2011, was on pace for 64 and 132 in a season that ended with one 100-point scorer. Then David Steckel happened.
Crosby had his age 23-, 24-, 25-seasons shortened significantly by injuries.
If there isn't another move, the Penguins traded a second-round pick for a 30-something bottom-six center who is undersized and counts $5 million against cap for next two seasons.
If there's a plan in Pittsburgh, I can't see it.
Mike Sullivan was encouraged by the organization to take yesterday’s day off to fly home to Boston for the birth of his first grandchild. His granddaughter, Emerson Grace, arrived last night and everyone is healthy and happy. Mike will meet the team in Vegas on Thursday.
In 1992, after he was traded, Paul Coffey put on his skates and took a last lap around Civic Arean AFTER Penguins played.
“That was for me,” he said. “I loved playing there. I wanted to be on that ice one last time before I left.”
I think of this every
#NHLTradeDeadline
Sidney Crosby with 7 points is last 2 games brings him within 5 of 82, which would guarantee he ties Wayne Gretzky for most consecutive point-per-game seasons at 19.
🤯
The Penguins spent the entire season being so cap-strapped they couldn't play their best prospects. As of Wednesday, they'll be unable to fill out a 23-player roster because they're still cap-strapped — all to add a bottom-six center who is 31, and has brutal metrics.
Good on Jeff Carter.
He’s been a good soldier this season.
Heck of a career if that’s his last goal.
If I’m
@penguins
he has a job in organization next season. There is a lot he can contribute off the ice.
McDavid is one of most gifted players in history. But…
Orr won IN Boston.
Gretzky IN Edmonton.
Lemieux, Crosby IN Pittsburgh.
Yzerman IN Detroit.
Ovechkin IN Washington.
McDavid must win IN Edmonton. That’s his legacy, and it’s on the line now.
The Penguins NEVER offered 4 years to Evgeni Malkin. His camp reportedly tried to get there with GM Ron Hextall, and closest they got was “what it could look like.” The 4-year contract was NOT on table from Penguins.
GM Ron Hextall, AGM Chris Pryor & Hockey Ops President Brian Burke fired by Penguins.
Pryor has effectively stopped showing up last week. Hextall and Burke said goodbyes to staff Wednesday.
First met Kris Letang when he was 18, couldn’t speak English. A couple of years later, after an early season home game, Gilles Meloche turned to me & said: “f*cking star.”
Kris became one.
He’s an even better human. Respect him so much.
He deserves this night.
#1Kris
@penguins
This is great.
Sidney Crosby's stick broke.
Malkin handed him one of his from bench.
Crosby didn't like that stick, so he dropped it and got one of his own from bench.
Penguins have six — SIX! — 20-goal scorers and they’re a minus-5 in goal differential on season.
It’s actually impressive how management got top 6 so right and almost everything else so wrong.
Any Penguins fan complaining about Big 3 “always being hurt” or Sidney Crosby having a late surgery … just stop it.
They’re the 3 persons most responsible for the greatest era in franchise history. They’ve given yinz EVERYTHING! Whatever more they give, be grateful and enjoy it.
Penguins caught off guard — who wasn’t? — by Marc-André Fleury trade from Vegas. Sense I get is PIT is trying to assess situation and see what’s going on now with Chicago.
How
@penguins
— once the class of
@NHL
— fell into disarray, out of
#StanleyCupPlayoffs
and almost broke their Big Three.
@TheAthletic
behind-the-scenes look at a chaotic couple of seasons in Pittsburgh 🏒
Steelers: We signed a SB winning QB, stole LB from Ravens.
Penguins: Our Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads were stolen.
Duquesne: We’re about to steal a NCAA spot.
Pitt: Don’t steal ours!
Penguins: So, like, playoffs can still happen.
Steelers: We traded 1st Rd QB.
It’s only Friday! 😵💫
Same era that produced 3 Cup wins, 16 playoff approaches likely ends with five consecutive postseason series losses. Still, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang should be celebrated forever as all-time greats in Pittsburgh sports lore.
Spare me, Penguins fans, these “they would have done better.”
The Penguins wasted every chance to prove it by not getting in. And they had many.
So it doesn’t matter what Capitals did against Rangers.
Capitals made it. Penguins didn’t.
#StanleyCupPlayoffs
Also, if you watched Game 3 and don’t want Penguins to extend Malkin and Letang — not because they deserve to finish in PGH (they do), but because they’re both still great — then I don’t even know what to tell you.
Window isn’t closed.
Goodnight.
Pitt. Duquesne. Penn State. Robert Morris.
A Friday/Sunday annual City Games (each team guaranteed two games) over Thanksgiving weekend at PPG Paints Arena.
Penguins’ Thanksgiving Eve game as lead in.
Would be an awesome 5 days in Western Pennsylvania.
We don’t view goalie-goals with enough astonishment. Even if one had been scored before Billy Smith’s in 1979, Tristan Jarry’s is only the 16th in the past 43 years.
There have been 32 holes in one at US Open in same span.
Think about that for a bit.
Evgeni Malkin is 37.
You wouldn't know it last 48 hours.
He's been breathtaking. 2 goals and four assists in last six periods. And he's been really good defensively, too.
Depression is a mental illness that afflicts millions, including myself. It's a daily grind, and even the good days can be very rough.
Watching the Penguins — or any NHL team — is not depressing.
You can switch the channel.
That's not an option with depression.
💚
Penguins bring back Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Guentzel, Rust and Rakell at minus-$1.715M cap space than those players would have cost last season. That’s some shrewd GM’ing by Ron Hextall. Credit where it’s due. Really good summer so far.
McCann, Matheson and Marino should all be Penguins. If they were, neither Smith, Karlsson and Graves are — and it’s much likelier Guentzel is already re-signed.
This probably isn’t helping many of yinz cope.
Sell before deadline.
Leverage Guentzel for major assets. Hope a team wants Smith. Eat $1M annually to get rid of Rakell. Load up on picks, potential NHLers, ideally prospects — any.
ID some UFAs that are value, get younger.
It’ll work better than this for Penguins.
