It's been a long time since I've read Willie Morris's "North Toward Home" but he has a whole section or chapter on why many residents of Vicksburg / Yazoo City don't celebrate the 4th of July when he was a kid. Morris's stories will have you rolling on the floor.

It’s interesting that his contemporaries all saw him as the person who could best summarize the 13 distinct rebellions in the colonies, providing them with a common voice.

Look at the morons trashing Jefferson below. Even many conservatives trash Jefferson for his many contradictions and wrong beliefs about Christianity. But Jefferson embodies what free people look like. And he’s the most prolific synthesizer of the American mind and rebellion.

Hamilton tees up the essential question in Federalist 1:. “…whether societies of men are really capable or not of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend for their political constitutions on accident and force.”.

History is lived before it can be written. Finally pulled this book from my shelf. Don’t really know what to say but we should see and remember what these guys went through so much more than we do. #Vietnamwar #Tetoffensive
