Playing a game with my 5 yo son, and he makes a mistake. "Dan!" "What did you just say, Bud?" "Dan!" "What does that mean?" "Oh, uhh, it means, like, 'Oh no!'" "Oh, bud. This isn't your fault. You didn't know this. It's actually not polite to say, and people will think about

Going bald is a crazy decision. I guess some men just don't love their wife enough to put in the effort.

Knock on wood. What if some combination of the CHIPS act, the Trump tariffs, the Chinese demographic collapse, Chinese military incompetence, and the indifference of the Taiwanese save us from a hot war over Taiwan? Great news if true.
The question of Taiwan is settled and it has been settled by the Taiwanese. Taiwan is barely a distinct entity from China. It has only existed for 80 years. They speak the same language as China. They're ethnically even more Han than China.

Yes. Yes. Burn these books to the ground and salt the earth.
I'll add a few categories of bad children's books: First up is "books that are actually for adults". These are principal-agent problems in book form. They amuse the adults who buy them. Or deal with topics that are only legible to adults. For kids they are nonsense.

I don't like children's books. I love children's books. And if they are slop then I throw them away.

But these + Dr Seuss have created the most joy for us, and I look forward to continuing reading them.

So what sparked joy in the modern children's book genre? Beyond the classics: Drew Daywolt, Sarah Boynton, Mo Willems (Elephant and Piggie), and the Princess in Black series (affirmative feminine power rather than defensive).

I hate every book made by this guy. They barely rhyme, and each book is built around one punch line. Slop. The unicorn pair here is especially bad. The two books teach exact opposite "lessons." Meaningless.

Next genre is novelized TV slop and IP slop. Your kid may love the IP. The TV show may be a delight. The book form is unengaging slop. Easy to make and sell. Below replacement.

Next category is gender grievance books pushed by the NYT and the chip-on-the-shoulder aunts who want your baby to start defensive. Of course girls can play pirates. But why tell a 3 yo girl that someone thinks she can't? Does she even want to? Chill out.

Currently Marie Kondoing the children's books. I could write a thread on the types of bad books. First up, the needless sequels. One hit is permutated as many times as can be sold. Slop predates AI.

We don't have a housing crisis. We have a "everyone wants to move to ~ten MSAs" crisis and some of them don't build housing.

When my kids are warming up before a soccer game, echoes of "six seven" reverberate through the players. Doesn't matter their team, race, or religion. They have something to share. It's a culture. There's nothing wrong with that.

I have been doing a lot more cardio this year. I don't understand why sometimes it makes me lose weight and sometimes it makes me the hungriest man alive.

I can't remember the name of it, but I enjoyed a satirical apple rumors website back in the day.
