I bought a tiny green AGA teapot to sit on my life-sized green AGA. The teapot has a tiny teapot of its own on the top. Anyone who says impending middle-age isn’t full of excitement is LYING.
Calling BTP to report:
-The 1st hr of Mamma Mia before you settle down &realise it’s meant to be awful & is therefore glorious.
-The use of the phrase “sexual union” in the Common Worship marriage service.
-Spanx.
-People who don’t make eye contact when they shake your hand.
65 in our little village church for Evensong this evening. Successful evangelism via beautiful, timeless, words and music? Or was it just the promise of free Pimm’s being served after the service?
@LibraryLydia
@SketchesbyBoze
I’d do nearly anything to be in the same room as Lord Peter Wimsey...Anything except be in the same room as Ace Ventura. Sorry, Lord Peter.
Feeling v.thankful today. My wee church choir sang stonkingly well (including a Brewer Nunc + my fave loony hymn ‘Ye who own the faith of Jesus’). Got a congratulatory email from parishioner I’d never met + a young couple who were there have asked us to sing for their wedding ❤️
My “little” church choir is so big now & finally has enough men that we can sit tenors on one side of the stalls & basses on t’other, & have had to add extra chairs next to stalls to fit everyone. And what a great, rich noise we make all together! Deo Gracias!
Happy 30th birthday,
@_F_B_G_
I’ll refrain from sharing any of the truly horrifying photos I possess of the two of us together, so here’s the one nice one I could find:
My father has decreed that the dress code for my mother's funeral next week should be bright colours. Would it be totally inappropriate/extra to crack out a full Margo Leadbetter multicoloured maxi dress for the occasion?
Amazing procession, Evensong and benediction at
@CarlisleCath
today. Wonderful witness to the people of Carlisle as we processed through the city, then the Cathedral full to bursting, top hymns and music, and clouds of incense (my hair still smells of it.) I am so so happy!
After 3hours stuck on trains, I finally got home, sat in the garden, drank about 3 mouthfuls of G&T, and promptly signed up to participate in an archaeological dig on Monday (when I had planned to spend the day finishing finishing my IHBC application). Kids: don’t drink!
Quote from churchwardens’ training, repeated at last night’s PCC “the old ways don’t open new doors”& “you have to keep changing. Don’t do the same old cycle of Harvest, Advent etc every year”. 😡

Preach! No man has ever lived up to the early childhood sight of Kermit as Captain Smollett, in an open-necked white shirt, sword fighting Tim Curry.
Tonight I will be hosting a dinner party featuring a prawn cocktail starter, wearing a green floral maxi dress. Living the Margo Leadbitter life to the full!
Extremely wholesome and niche late birthday/early Christmas gift from the hubster. Anglican Twitter friends, behold! (Credit to
@caraprocella
for the original idea)
Today a miracle occurred - a man I’d never met turned up for my choir rehearsal. Said he’d just moved to the parish & would like to join the choir. Has sung in robed church choirs since the age of 6, & can do tenor or bass as needed. Having heard him, he has a nice voice, too!!!
@womenlikeuspod
I refuse to participate in this unedifying spectacle in which women are constantly pitted against each other in order to break down the sisterhood.
(But Kate, obvs)
Today I went to York and:
-attended a staff conference
-bought an entire Royal Doulton dinner/tea set from a charity shop window
-attended Evensong at
@YorkMinChoir
-dined solo on Vietnamese food.
A good day, all-in-all!
Wrote & led the Intercessions at church for the first time this morning. Really weird & moving experience, looking out at everyone in prayer as they react to your words & respond to your lead. Big sense of responsibility & humbling power, still not sure how I feel about it.
My colleague on a zoom call just now had an *actual skull* on the sideboard behind him, and that sort of nonchalant gothic energy is the reason I thank the lord every day that I got this job.
The hubster went to Deanery Synod last night for the first time. Has he lost:
A) the plot
B) the will to live
C) his faith in humanity
?
Answers on the back of a postcard.
Prayers for my lovely friend and fellow choir member, Madeleine, who was received into the Church of England at today’s Pentecost Holy Communion, Deo Gratias!
The announcement came through while I was running our church choir rehearsal. We stood up and sang God Save the King, then rehearsed the Nunc Dimittis: “Lord, now lettest now thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word”. May she rest in peace and rise in glory!
Well Leicester is pretty cool!
Visiting the

Heritage Action Zone but also taking time to check out the Old Town and its fab independent boutiques and cafes. Will have to come back soon!
It’s my birthday, twitter chums! I’m 34 today. My mother-in-law bought me a huge book of the Flower Fairies, and I can honestly say that I’m absolutely mesmerised by it*
*might be something to do with the champagne breakfast my husband brought me
Dressed up to scare local children trick or treating this Halloween. Then the first trick or treaters to ring the doorbell were….my adult friends, bringing me soup because they heard my boiler was broken.
I’m afraid the vicar has made another slightly creepy poster for our next Evensong this Sunday, but please do come along - lots of lovely music!

6pm at Wetheral Church, Cumbria! Tell your friends!
Just realised that yesterday marked 3 whole years for me at
@HistoricEngland
. What a brilliant 3 yrs it’s been! Every day is a joy & a privilege. The buildings I get to visit are remarkable & my colleagues are the best!
Found an old Cumberland & Westmorland Pevsner and was most amused to find our house described as a “grossly high-Victorian villa”. Oh Nikolaus, don’t hold back, tell us what you really think!
Please, for the love of all that is holy, do not let the Dr Who writers see these outfits, or they will create an episode which gives me nightmares for years to come!
@s8mb
Only experienced it for the first time this month. Just bloody brilliant, weirdly spacious & impressive stations & platforms, & feels like a transit system in a foreign country, so unused am I to anything actually new & fit-for-purpose in this country!
If ever I die doing something honourable, and you want to memorialise me, please don’t turn me into a gargoyle/grotesque on Carlisle Cathedral. Thank you.
Today is the anniversary of the death of PC George Russell, who was killed in the line of duty on 10 February 1965. In what we believe is unique amongst the country's Cathedrals, PC Russell is immortalised in a carved stone grotesque if you pass today, gaze up, remember him.
At tonight’s Midnight Mass, I saved the whole church and its congregation (of about 7 people) from fiery doom, when the advent ring got a bit carried away and all the foliage burst into flame. An excellent start to Christmas Day, even if I do say so myself!
Final Midnight Mass anecdote..
Managed to blow vast amounts of hot wax all over my hand, my mask, my bag and my best coat when blowing out the big candle. Looks like I’ve been doing something deeply inappropriate to a large male elephant. Merry Christmas, all!
Driving (well, limping) through enormous snowdrifts on the M6 near Tebay. Fascinating, magical, and not a little unnerving. Slow and steady crawl home.
Thinking of making myself a lockdown calendar. Like an advent calendar but designed to get me through ‘til 2nd Dec with a little bit of chocolate every day. At which point I can transition seamlessly into my regular Advent calendar with a little bit of chocolate every day.🍫📆🍫
An extremely sunny day in Corbridge, featuring Corbridge Roman Town, the River Tyne, an extremely souind children’s book, a vicar’s pele tower, & a partly-Saxon church containing a complete Roman archway!
Does anyone know of a church looking to sell/donate a set (c.20) of Parish Psalters or similar? Our church choir now sings a monthly evensong & we’d love to stop wasting paper & ink on endless printing! We’re based near Carlisle but I’m happy to pay postage! Thanks in advance😊
Sang a concert at Ambleside Church yesterday. Favourite bits were the windows with my name on, and the wonderful wartime mural which includes actual parishioners and clergy from that time! (Didn’t get a photo of my own of it, so this is via Google)
@JayHulmePoet
Please please please make a homemade pilot and put it on YouTube! Then we don’t have to wait for silly tv producers to get their act together before we get to enjoy watching all the happy wholesomeness!
This is the cope that will be worn by our Dean, the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle, at tomorrow's

Made from crimson velvet and decorated with embroidered flowers and stars, the cope was made for the coronation of Charles II in 1661 and is the oldest in our collection.

Went to Wigan Pier. It’s very short!
Not pictured: my colleague Beth cackling with uproarious laughter for about ten minutes at the difference between 1) what she’d envisaged and been dying to visit while we were in Wigan, and 2) the reality.
Great visit to Ormskirk High Street Heritage Action Zone to see the great public realm works, administered by

Our church - with the Holy Week cross, shroud, and crown of thorns - looked so beautiful this morning when I arrived, it just took my breath away.

Today I have been making very chocolatey fridge tray cakes for a ‘Reception into the CofE plus Pentecost’ service tomorrow. I’m going to experiment with making flames and doves out of coloured icing later. I fear I have become a caricature of myself.
Update re: previous plea for Parish Psalters: yesterday a huge box of them arrived from anon.benefactor
@eastldnevensong
& we used them straight away at choir last night. I don’t know which parish church you sourced them from or who you are, but thank you so very much! 🥰

Well yes, exactly. Plus I think doing the old traditions well doesn’t stop you also introducing good and interesting new stuff too. There’s room for both. Advocates for the new seem to see the old as actively repulsive, rather than something which many existing worshippers love.
@_F_B_G_
If it’s any consolation, I realised that if I’d never accepted the worst job I ever had, which ended in humiliation, I wouldn’t’ve gone onto my next (lovely) job, which set me up for life. Instead I would’ve picked a better but mediocre job & probably still be stuck there now.
Evensong (a belated Candlemas one, with the church full of candlelight) was gorgeous this evening. Can’t think of a better way to end the week. Deo Gracias!
